Transformation According to Therese of Lisieux, Part 1 - Thomas Keating

Fr. Thomas Keating presents the wisdom of the life and teaching of the Little Flower, St. Therese (1873-1897) as it impacts on our contemplative journey. This is part 1 of a 2-part talk, recorded in 1997 on the 100th anniversary of her death, at Don Bosco High School in Ramsey, NJ by Contemplative Outreach. A PRAYER COMPOSED FROM PSALM 91 TO UPLIFT AND ENCOURAGE IN THIS TRYING DAY WE LIVE IN. A PRAYER COMPOSED FROM PSALM 91 THAT I PRAY WILL UPLIST AND ENCOURAGE OTHERS IN THIS FRIGHTENING DAY AND AGE WE LIVE IN NOW. A PRAY TO RECITE COMPOSED FROM PSALM 91 + ALMIGHTY GOD, SWEET ABBA, let me dwell in the secret place You provide, the Most High - I shall abide under the shadow of You, the Almighty. Indeed, I shall say of you my Lord, "You are my refuge and my fortress; My God, in Whom I will trust." Surely I believe and know that You shall deliver me from the snare of the fowler and from the perilous pestilence. You shall cover me with Your feathers, and under Your wings I will take refuge; Your truth shall be my shield and buckler. And I will not be afraid of the terror by night, nor of the arrow that flies by day, Oh Lord God. Nor will I fear the pestilence that walks in darkness, nor of the destruction that lays waste at noonday, oh my God. And I believe that a thousand may fall at my side, and ten thousand at my right hand; but it shall not come near me. Only with my eyes will I look and see the reward of the wicked. Because I have made You the Lord, who is my refuge, even the Most High, my dwelling place. No evil will befall me, nor shall any plague come near my dwelling. For you my God shall give Your angels charge over me, to keep me in all Your ways. In their hands they shall bear me up, least I dash my foot against a stone. And I shall tread upon the lion and the cobra, the young lion and the serpent I shall trample underfoot. Because You my God have set Your love upon me, therefore You shall deliver me; You will set me on high, because I have known Your Name. And I shall call upon You, and You will answer me; You will be with me in trouble; You will deliver me and honor me. And with long life will you satisfy me.

    You don't really know if Fr Keating properly expressed St Therese of Lisieux regarding what he claimed about her. The fact is that Fr Keating is the one who was heavily influenced by Protestantism. Fr Keating left his Monastery in Spencer, Ma. (A heavy duty cult-like environment surrounded that area), to go on this lecture type circuit promoting his and a few other Religious person's developed method of what he calls "Centering Prayer". He has deviated from true Catholic teaching on Centering Prayer by mixing Bhuddism with it, that does not properly know or reverence the true God of Christianity! I am not claiming he did these things with any bad intent. He has a good following and that shows how easy it can be for people to deceive themselves. Bhuddism is a human philosophy and cannot dictate to Christianity in order to subdue and control it. Human philosophy is always finding avenues that it did not fully consider when constructing themselves to begin with. This is what Thomas Merton was saying (about the Bhuddists who failed to co-exist within a Communist system), in the only televised taping of him in 1968. Undoubtedly there were people who did not appreciate what he was saying, and some say his death a few hours later, was not an accident.

    St Therese of Lisieux never had any influence from Protestantism directly. There was a heresy occurring primarily in the Churches in France in her time, but she recognized it as not a Catholic teaching and resisted it, defending herself against it. If Luther said something that even remotely resembled St Therese, then it would be because it was something he carried over from Catholicism, as a former Catholic Priest.

    What is disturbing was Fr Keating's negating the inspiration of the gospel writers regarding the mustard seed. Many people will make varying interpretations of Sacred Scripture but only Atheists or non-Christian Critics would claim that Jesus did not say something that Inspired Scripture says he said. Fr Keating discredited himself and it is questionable as to whether it was blasphemy for him to say. I don't know where he got the story he told about the mustard seed from? But Keating said that Jesus did not say what Sacred Scripture says he did about the mustard seed, but that the evangelist made it up!!!!!! St Paul said All Scripture is God breathed. Some translations say All Scripture is inspired of (or by) God. Not just one gospel writer recorded the account of the mustard seed but three of them did: Matthew, Mark, and Luke, and all three recorded Jesus as starting the parable by saying that the mustard seed is the smallest seed on earth. Fr Keating did not even mention that, and all three gospel accounts are the same.

    Then I am stuck with the idea that scripture has stated something untrue. For, though the mustard seed might be the smallest of seeds, it most certainly doesn't grow to the largest of trees. That is just biologically wrong. Unlike father Keating I think Jesus did make the untrue statement, but meant it as to be a brain twister for his listeners. I think Keating's explanation of the meaning was right on.

    May the Holy Spirit help us to discern the truth of what we hear no matter from whence it comes. We must be careful because the enemy is subtle and cunning. So, if he was saying that hell is merely a state of mind, red flags should go up.

    If he'll is referring to a physical place then this would pose a challenge to an infinite good God. Hell cannot be outside of God, but is a soul's self rejection in the presence of God. Imagine coming before the Great Loving Father of my very existence, and knowing for eternity that I don,t belong, that I never acknowledged nor returned that Love when I had the chance to do so. Hell as a place would be a relief in comparison.

    And yet time and time again throughout the Gospels Jesus calls us away from our secular priorities, our homes, our families, our socially worthy ambitions...to leave all and follow. The rich were not told that they could be "transformed " and remain rich. The bereaved man could not return to bury his mother. Keating is a salesman peddling an easy product for the lukewarm, for those who want to continue to live their lives but give it a new legitimacy. Keating is a lifestyle coach for the indulged.

    @Mark, I try to spend quality time with Jesus in the gospel. You have quoted the main “problem sayings”of Jesus. They lay out a quite radical lifestyle compared to many in the USA. I use to have money but not “real” money. I gave at least 75% of what I had away. I even gave from my retirement money. I now live month to month like other seniors. I wasn’t as wise in my giving as I should have been ,that is my fault. I don’t fret over it though. What I am getting at is that I live with guilt that is like a two edged sword. One is that I could give more and the other is that I mismanaged what God has given me. I am not asking that you counsel me, I am just trying to present a dilemma that I could go on about but I won’t. I hope I didn’t bore you.

    12:30 No kidding. Think about that for a minute . . . and you might get a different idea of what the gospels are all about and what our relationship to them might be. Especially if you consider the fact that's its pretty unlikely that Christ and the apostles ever intended the Gospels to be read. The literacy rate was less than 10% in Christ's time (!)

    What kind of comment is that? Scriptures in the original language is infallible and wholly Divine, having God as the Ultimate Author, in every word and sentence. Is Christ Jesus God? Yes! Therefore Christ Jesus did intend from all eternity for the Gospels to be read and taught through His Catholic Church. We knew what was to be codified because it was passed on through the liturgy and read aloud during the liturgies since the beginning of the Church.

    I'm sure Christ knew the New Testament had to be written down...& that might have been why Paul was chosen & thank God, He wrote all those letters....look at the misunderstanding that occurred in the early Churches from "word of mouth" preachung. Didn't you ever play that game...where you have a circle of people..& you whisper one sentence to the one nearest you, and then they do the same to the person nearest them. By the time it goes around & comes back to you...it always is a complete different sentence. That is why the Gospels & Letters had to be written down & inspired by the Holy Spirit!!!

    Centering prayer is not authentic Christian teaching!

  • @cherylmburton5577

    @cherylmburton5577

    2 жыл бұрын

    The Catholic Catechism accepts Centering Prayer as authentic, but states that it is not Contemplative Prayer, which is Infused Contemplation, and is a pure and unmerited gift. The Catechism says Centering Prayer is Aquired Contemplation which prepares a person for the gift of Contemplation as the spirit grants it. This does not necessarily mean that Fr Keating's teaching is proper because it can become very frustrating waiting for that gift, if you are never going to receive it because of some instructors misleading teaching. St Paul wrote that at this time many instructors will not only be misleading but they will be misled themselves. The Catechism stresses striving through Centering Prayer with the help of grace to be granted the gift of Infused Contemplation.
