Trains, Pastilla, and Exploring the Fès Médina, Morocco 🇲🇦: FionnOnTheRoad Episode 20

My time in Morocco is quickly coming to an end, too quickly for my liking, but I have two more videos for ya before I leave. In this episode of FionnOnTheRoad I make my way by train to Fes, a historic old city best known for its Medina, the oldest and largest in Morocco. The train ride was beautiful, and I even managed to lean out the side for a bit and get an even more up close view of the scenery.
Upon my arrival, I take my time to weave my way through some of the 9000+ streets that make up the Fès Médina. Eating figs, checking out the Al Qaraouiyine university and the Chouara tanneries before ending my day trying a delicious chicken pastilla. This is my first pastilla in Morocco, and I’m sad that I didn’t try one earlier, the icing sugar and cinnamon sprinkled over the top made for a really interesting flavour combination, but one that can NOT be missed if you’re visiting.

    Don’t worry, I won’t let little bad experiences taint my outlook on an otherwise wonderful city. At the end of the day it’s a very small issue, and small issues can arise in any city in any country. I still really enjoyed Fes!

    About the tanneries Fionn same thing happend to me and my cousin (Both of Moroccan descent and we speak the language) We were asked to pay money just to walk through and we actually felt very lucky because other than journalists they don't allow anyone there. We could watch them from the balcony where you stood but to walk through you really need some insider to allow you to do so and to take pictures. I know for a fact that the people who work there do not enjoy to be filmed or photographed and they want to preserve the authenticity of their oldest tannery in the world. Please don't take it personally 😉 It's very hard to enter that zone for everyone 😁

    Oh no I didn’t take it to personally, I understand that there are going to be some difficulties I’ll have to face while travelling, and that can be in any country, whether it be Morocco or Canada or Spain! I think I was too ambitious in thinking I could get in by myself, you’re right next time I’ll need a guide

    Pastilla is a traditional Moroccan ROYAL dish, it was made for kings or rich people only in the past but now everyone can make it and eat it, it has 2 kinds, one with chicken (sweet & savory ) & the other with seafood (savoury & kinda spicey a tad bit) I recommend Morocco food tours agency next time u visit Morocco, they'll fill u up with info abt everything, especially the food

    Thank you for this video. You're a nice and humble man who also respects the dead by not walking through the graveyard. And it's a shame that some donkeys who don't follow Moroccan law make your stay sometime unconfortable. In Morocco there're clear rules that no one should haras a tourist/visitor. But you did good by saying no. And ofcourse you can call the cops on him and he will have a hard time to explain what he did. If he is indeed the guard than he got a job and an income and trying to take advantage of you can have serieus consequences for him. I know vacation time no time for this but this types should be stopped. ....anyway enjoy the good and till next video 👍

    Somebody please teach this poor guy to haggle!!! Number one rule of haggling in Morocco: Always reduce the price to half when taking taxi cab rides from or to the airport or port, in gifshops (or normal shops if the prices are not marked on some sort of menu, and with tour guides. Rule number two: Don't accept a service or take a product unless you confirm the price!!!! don't accept cab fairs in a crowded place to escape the crowd, you will find yourself charged double if not triple for example. You have to haggle in Morocco, it's a game that us locals like. And service providers / shop owners usually just spike up the prices a bit expecting people to haggle. So, always assume that you can get whatever you want cheaper than the price you were first offered. As for places to visit, any public space is accessible you just have to give a 20 to the right person (mosques are unfortunately out of the question) but if you want to visit one, I think the big one in Casablanca is accessible to non-muslims and it's basically a representation of the rest of the mosques in the country. I hope the rest of the trip is fun for you!!!

  • @fotr

    @fotr

    2 жыл бұрын

    Haha I definitely need to get better at haggling, but I have learned to do so at shops and when taking cabs. My issue here was that the man at the tannery would not let me pass without giving him money and I didn’t even want to be given a tour or anything! Regardless it’s not a big issue at all, I’ve still loved my time in Morocco

    @@fotr it is fine, but please educate yourself when you say things like that. do some research to get the facts straight. We all learn and try hard to learn about other cultures and histories when we visit a foreign country. you don't want a tourist coming to your home country and spreading false information on the net. if you don't know somethings, don't say something. enjoy your time in Africa!

    Man Chill a bit! don't rush your visit across a city like you're on a busy important job. try to learn to talk with people and less talking to your camera
