This hit home today. As a busy parent of a two year old it’s hard to balance all those spinning plates.

Yup! I have 2 kids under 2 and it’s something people will never understand until they live it. Training and sleep isn’t optimal but you just gotta get it in whenever you can

I had a client want to do 2 powerlifting competitions last year on back-to-back weekends, and honestly, the idea of competition is to just have fun and test yourself. People overthink these things too much. You don't need to be worried about squeezing out an extra 1-2% performance, all the time, when you are just doing this for health, strength, and fun. Why ruin the fun? Gotta just embrace life and keep moving to the future! Anyway, they ended up doing both meets and had a great time, plus set some PRs!

I’ve had so many people argue with me about my training because I do SuperTotal training (oly+powerlifting=total of 5 movements) and they always say, you’re not training “oPtImALlY” for either sport, why not stick to one of the other” blah blah blah Like dude I enjoy lifting heavy things and I enjoy hard training. I have fun with what I’m doing and I’m going to continue doing it. Powerlifting is fun but gets monotonous, and oly lifting is fun, but also gets monotonous on its own Mfers are so scared to just try new things and think all training has to fit within very specific parameters for it to work or be efficient
I have to admit that "time never stops" has yet another meaning for me. I started lifting at age 50 and so far I've been able to keep increasing my strength over the last 8 years. My goal is to be stronger at 60 than I will be at 59, stronger at 65 than I was at 60 and to do that for as long as I can. But time doesn't stop and ultimately I will be cutting back on what I do. My hope is just to keep it interesting and find movements and challenges I can do so long as I can do something.

Honestly this I think is harder than deciding what to do at a young age. Time starts to take its toll and what you are capable of may not be wise. I can lift this weight and work out 4 days a week starts to exceed the rate of recovery and wisdom would be to lift less than you can and less often than you want. Difficult to do for a lot of people who have been pushing themselves for thousands of hours in a gym over 40-50 years. Hopefully with all that age though the requisite wisdom was also developed.

@@NONO-hz4vo I think it's a lot like cutting. The load has to go down to match capacity and avoid injury - on some days I find that takes more discipline than I have.

Well said my friend. Keep pushing!
A nice surprise hearing Alan Thrall quoting Alan Watts. Good vid full of wisdom!
you look lean and young!! all the best for the competition
Thanks for the words of wisdom Alan. I’ve been having a hard time being consistent at the gym with my work schedule, but it’s these type of videos you provide that help me push through the road blocks and stay with it. Good luck in your competition!!!

Same here. Well timed after the chaos of the holidays and year end stuff.
Really needed to hear this. As new father my life and routine had been put upside down! All for the better, I love spending time with my newborn and I cherish these moments. I do feel like I am losing my sense of self, but I just need to adapt and do what I can. Thanks for the words of wisdom!
Thanks for this message, Alan. I’ve been recovering from a surgery a few months ago which has limited my ability to lift. Lately I’ve been discouraged and de-motivated. Your words were encouraging - it’s ok to not be where I was pre-surgery and to just do what I can and accept that it might be a lower level of intensity for a while. I needed to hear that. Thanks man.
Just Watched the old 10.000 calorie diet video from 8-9 yrs ago and its amazing how different the videos are now. I think both types of content are great and have value and its nice to be able to look back at how much you and your content has changed/evolved over the years
comeback strength is real. happened to me after lockdown and after 2 surgeries
You’re an inspiration! Thanks!!!
I’m on choppy waters rn, again. I did so in 2019 but made it, I cried a little today cuz I was frustrated but then I just remembered that I’ve been here before and it’s just another wave I gotta surf or I’ll wipe out, but god dammit I ain’t never gonna quit! Thank you For this
Just got out of the Navy, and "time never stops" is awesome, thanks for the inspiring words Alan!
Really good message here Alan. Thanks for posting.
What an amazing video. Thank you!
Thanks Alan, great message.
Hearing this helped me clear my mind. Thanks for all the years of great advice and I hope 2023 is an amazing year for you!
Awesome video. Thanks for hitting a nail on a head with it .
Love it. Great vid
very inspiring, thanks allan
This hit home when you started talking about change. Just graduated college and am moving to another state for my first adult job. I’m going alone so it feels like I’m leaving my life and friends behind. Not the same as taking a break from training, but the message definitely applies
Great video. Always love hearing Alan’s words of wisdom. Very inspirational
I've not seen your work before, but this video struck a chord with me. Good work and thank you. 👍
Alan, you really taught me a lot in training. I never leave a comment before, but today I wanna say thank you! When I been locked down in Shanghai for 2 months. I can only train at minimum loads, like jumping up stairs etc. My deadlift dropped from 240kg to 200kg. Now I'm back to 220kg and I feel so different and satisfied. I can move on to back to 240kg again and more. Anyway, Thank you Alan! Sorry for my poor English. Train on time!!!!
Thank you. This is exactly what I needed tonight.
The last few months have been absurdly... bizarre for me. Had to pack up and move across the country for work, haven't seen my wife or kiddo since September, recently had to pull out of a contest I was prepping for (mostly to keep my mind sane) because I had to move... AGAIN. I kinda needed to hear this. Thank you, Aaron Paul.
Good advice!
I love this. I needed to hear this a year or two ago, but better late than never.
"Time never stops" I needed to hear this for completely different reasons.
Allan Thrall’s channel never stops changing and never stops getting better.
Didn’t expect good inspiration and life guidance from a vid like this my man. Last year I was balancing High School level projects, with football, with gym work, with test weeks, with game weeks, with social time. I thought I was really missing out some quality time of one thing by doing another. But time always keeps moving, nice one
Wow I think I was meant to see this. Haven’t watched your channel In a few months for two big reasons. 1 I got a new job in a totally new field and 2 I became a father 4 months ago. I had just started to make some milestones in my powerlifting journey but all of that came to a stop 4 months ago when everything changed I started making excuses , I was tried, New job, first time parent it was rough tbh and I made excuses not to work out. Now for about 2 weeks I’ve gotten back into a routine it’s not the same and the weight is much lighter now but I’m getting back into and making a new routine. Can’t wait to see where life takes me. Thank you for making this! Your the best!
Alan's insights always puts a smile on my face. Ups and downs are a part of life and we should accept that.
Perfect timing Alan. I’m PCS’ing this summer and might need back surgery in a month or two due to an injury. Needless to say my training volume has fallen off a cliff and I’ve been struggling to find the motivation to adapt my training to methods I don’t usually use (body weight work and swimming). Thank you for making videos like this and keeping your community focused and motivated. Semper.
Wow Alan I haven't seen your vids in a while and you look amazing. Congrats on the body re-comp. Also thanks for teaching me how good avocado and eggs are!!!
ramble UNTAMED! Thanks for the video.
Love the wisdom videos! I am about to start a new job tomorrow, but signed up for an 80k ultra. I applied for the dutch marine corps but that wasn't a good match after all but I quickly got a new job, started setting new goals and got a new fire burning!!
This is just what I need to hear right now. Going through a bad UC flare up and being completely useless has really got me down. I can't do a damn thing at the moment, but I look forward to when I can keep training.

May want to try carnivore diet, a lot of ppl have nullified ibd symptoms on that diet
Absolutely phenomenal message
Very well timed video
Alan meditating on the meaning of time while deadlifting tires is more ASMR than all the other ASMR videos on youtube combined.
Thanks man, I really needed that.
Wow I did not expect this, thank you for this message. Starting grad school while working full time is a lot but you saying better to train a little than not at all made me feel better!
Looking jacked brother. Wish you best for your next competition. 💪💪
Thank You Alan!
Nice timing on this video, we will be moving here shortly and I keep seeing comps being posted that look like lots of fun, such as Wrath and the Team comp at Untamed, but know that I won’t be in the area to do them.
About to graduate college this spring and move from Indiana to Los Angeles to start my career. This video really spoke to me, thank you.
Alan, this is absolutely something I needed to hear today. I have two kids as well and it has been a real game changer for me. I really appreciate this video and I’m going to make “time never stops” part of my daily mantra to keep me on the path. Best of luck to you Now and in the future.
This is a great pre deployment video, just gonna pick it back up when I get back, while doin what I can
🔥Love this
I love that quote, gonna try and start using that. Also what are those sphere wieght
Great video 👍
Needed this so much
Thank you for your insight and encouragement, Alan :) My wife and I are expecting our first child in a few months, I’m starting a new full time job after finishing grad school, and she’s thinking about a career switch-in the midst of all that, we’re adjusting our previous training for Ragnar relay races (and yeah, super psyched for your running videos, btw!) to squeezing in dog jog/walks, body weight workouts, and 5 AM dance aerobics with old videos with Richard Simmons It’s been very heartening to go back rewatch you other videos on adjusting training expectations with major life changes-and this concept is a great addition to that Thanks again!
Thanks, Alan
I needed this
Inspiring words. Time never stops!
Great vid Alan. I'm going to deadlift 600 natty when I turn 50 next year. Thanks for the insight adjustments in life we all must deal with at some point!
Thank you for all the content , I always quote you when people ask me about how I became so fit
Great video
Really needed this today. I have started a new job with 40-50h each week of purely standing and walking which is new and exhausting to me. I am having a hard time staying consistent with training but videos like this always help me push through! Thank you!
I had no idea how badly I needed to hear. Absolutely perfectly said.
Thanks for that. I needed to hear that. No seriously you have no idea.
Just this morning I was thinking, “damn the homie Alan hasn’t dropped a video in a while, hopefully all is good”. Then I see this! And it’s exactly what I needed to hear 👏🏽. On the verge of making a huge life change (along with prepping to send my oldest to college) so the stress and negative foreshadowing has been on overdrive. Alan my man! You nailed it homie! Gracias 🙏🏽 keep up the awesome work 💪🏽
Good message. Hope that wasn't one of his clients' car though 5:08 😅
I'm starting grad school in July, and planning to start trying for a baby in September. I'm unsure what my lifting will do during the next 2 years. This is encouraging.
OMG Alan, I was just thinking about this the other day. I thought my powerlifting days were over as I am recovering from a second stroke. But recently I've returned to the gym, albeit in a much diminished capacity than pre stroke me. Your words of encouragement have given me new hope and focus. For that I cannot thank you enough. Semper Fi.
Hot damn buddy I needed this and it was nothing to do with weight lifting
Thanks Alan, just had my first son and this has been all over my mind. Ill be looking to your dad bod videos in hope soon enough.

Congratulations
I really needed to hear this slogan and advice, even if I'm most likely younger than most in this comment section as a 19 year old, living with his parents. I have a part time job and attend a technical college majoring in networking. Recently I came down sick twice over the winter time, as plenty has been spreading at my college. However my dad blamed it on the gym, and forced me to cancel my own membership for a while. I invested in a home gym, but it's still nothing like going to the gym and being in that atmosphere. I continue to train hard and use all the resources I can to become stronger, and feel comforted to hear that once I get out of the control of my own family, the barbell and weights will still be there at the gym so I can pick up wherever I left off.
This video came at the perfect time. I start my biggest graduate degree semester yet Tuesday and am wondering how I can squeeze everything in.
I just had 8 months filled with 3 leg surgeries after snapping my hamstring off of my leg and then infections that followed. I needed to hear this today.
Not enough people think this way. Great lesson Alan!
Fuck man I can’t tell you how much I needed this. Thanks Alan
Thanks.
This was perfect. I had a week where I was beat up from training, work, and family and couldn't hit anything I did the week prior. Went in and did what I could. This week still isn't great but things will level out and I'll get back to where i was with training.
Stay Hard!
well said man
get my vote for video of the year
Bout to graduate med school and start residency in a few months, this video couldn't have come at a better time.
Thanks for all the advice over the years and you been very helpful. Still to this day I can’t do a deadlift without hearing you screaming “DO NOT MOVE THE BARBELL” keep up the inspiration and motivation.
I didn’t know what you’d say when I picked this video but I needed to hear all of this. I’m just at one of those points in my life where a lot is out of my control. Thanks for inspiring some hope.
First - great wisdom.🙏 Second - I can't believe you still have those blue Adidas. 👏👏
Wise words
This is the type of wisdom if you are younger you have to take on faith. Until you have a few adult decades to look back on it is hard to gain this perspective. Experience is a great teacher, and sometimes a harsh teacher, it is wise to learn from those who have traveled roads that only time can lead you down.
Can confirm this is true. As a new father, I felt this, but now 6 months in, I'm feeling just like it was before. Trainning is back to full force and feeling strong again quickly.
Wise applicable words 🙏
pretty good workout
Let’s go!
I appreciate the Mastodon in the background.
I have 6 kids, a full time job and I train 4 times a week (2 X 2.5 hours at the gym and 2 times at home). I've reached 230kg DL, 200kg squat and 135kg bench while training on my own (without a coach). I've started training when I had 3 kids already. Time is never a problem- it's only your sheer will to get your ass of the couch and start training untamed.
Funny you mentioned alan watts as sometimes when I search for him I accidentally search thrall and not watts
Omar and Eric said it back months ago on the Iron Culture Podcast. The stage and platform will always be there
That was an extra evil and motivating "train untamed" today. Feel like im about to shit lightning. Thanks Alan!
very nice
Ramble on brotha. And TRain on timeeeee...... Oh wait I meant TRAIN UNTAMED!!!
Hi Alan! I've been following your content for a while. I'm from Argentina, but this year I have the opportunity to go to California. Is it possible to visit you gym, maybe take a class or something that serves as a little tour into strongman training?
As a former denizen of Sacramento, it makes me happy to see water on the ground.
great video, has a very early elliot hulse vibe about it.
Competed in my first competition when I was 35. My son was 5 and my daughter 3. Took 2nd in the novice. Doing 2 open comps this year. Don’t think I could have done it when they were both little.
