    Two notes to make for this video: 1. Whilst I recorded in 60fps, the frame rate was not as stable as I would have hoped, so the frame rate is more accurately described as 40-60fps. 2. I followed the manual to try and understand the signalling, but the manual wasn't overly clear. If I made any mistakes with how I responded to the signals, please feel free to let me know here!

    There are actually supposed to be speed signs in the game as well as whistle boards. I was disappointed when I saw that the only speed sign was at Nostrand Avenue station. Another thing: the horn. On the LIRR, you do not have to sound the horn approaching, passing, or leaving a station unless there is a level crossing before or near it. The general American grade crossing rule is to sound the horn in two long blasts, then one sharp blast, and finally a long blast while the cab itself crosses the level crossing. You should always strive to do this, including at places where the crossings are not that many yards apart. Otherwise, great video! I'm so glad my favorite train YTer did a vid on the Long Island Railroad (I'm from Long Island)

    Thanks for the info, Joe. I was wondering why I never seem to see speed signs in routes around New York. It seems that DTG has miss them out then ? I can’t help but wonder why! I didn’t realise that the usual horn rules apply on this route, with the exception of not needing to sound the horn approaching or departing a station. Again, there’s no whistle boards which I presume are there in real life? This lack of signs really does make things quite challenging for me. Glad you enjoyed the video! And thanks for the favourite KZreadr comment, I’m flattered!

    few notes. 1) No bell on any EMU trains on the LIRR 2)You cannot increase speed with the ADU speed limit because 1) the ADU does not always reflect track speed and 2) You must wait for the tail end of the train to clear previous lower speed limit. When you left Hempstead, as soon as you saw the ADU upgrade to "60" your rear end was still inside of the "15" mph speed limit. 3) In the Northeast USA any speed signs are unreliable. Engineers must know the route like the back of their hand, and on the LIRR prior to becoming certified you must draw every branch on paper with signal locations, station, switches, and speed limits. 4) As a general rule of thumb-you can hit full length station platforms comfortably at 45mph and still make a station stop, and half size platforms at 35mph.

    Operating rules differ drastically from many railroads around the USA. Though the LIRR and MNRR are ran both by the MTA, there rule book is really different. An example is when entering a station on MNRR like the New Haven line, they sound the horn before each station. The LIRR does not do this. Both railroads do not require a double horn blast or even a single horn blast when departing stations. Except at Jamaica(LIRR) just to alert an employee walking on the tracks in that area. Bells are a weird issue with American Electric Multiple Units, just remember that if it has one then use it. LIRR has speed boards for every speed change on there territory. This excludes tracks west of Woodside since that is Amtrak territory. This is also said for horn/whistle boards before each Grade crossing. LIRR has no quiet zones, and horns must be blown 24/7 for each Grade crossing. It's the usual FRA 14L, Long Long Short Long sequence. When leaving and entering the tunnels into Manhattan, the same should be done. Another thing, Hillside is not shown because it's for employees from the adjacent central maintenance facility. One unify thing is that American signals might look different, but they all represent speed. Each signal aspect has a name and speed rule to go with it. I am in the interview process with the LIRR for the Locomotive Engineer position, so this flashcard study list signals only for the LIRR - quizlet.com/79398679/lirr-signals-flash-cards/. Anyway, I really enjoy your videos and I learned alot about Bristish Rail from your videos and that German signaling guide was a blessing. Thanks.

    Etho Smith Same thing with NJT when departing a station. I noticed many passenger trains don’t do 2 short horn blasts before leaving. Regarding bells on EMUs, it’s baffling why the EMUs in the Northeast lack them but the ones in Denver and Chicago do.

    P.S, for your Amtrak video. Amtrak "NEC" trains only sound there horn when entering a station with bell use. When departing a station they activate the bell until the locomotive has cleared the platform. The long long short long horn sequence is also done for both sets of tunnels entering and leaving Manhattan. And just dim headlights for approaching trains to not blind them. Good luck. A cool fact is that the conductor radios the engineer when to depart by saying this, ex "Conductor of Amtrak 185 to the Head of 185, Highball New York Penn". The Engineer replies after looking at the current cab signal aspect, ex " Amtrak 185 has clear indication highball New York Penn".

    I grew up in the area of the HOLLIS station of the LIRR. You can't find the HILLSIDE station stop, because it is for employees only. As you pass Hollis, that complex on the left is the LIRR Maintenance shops, and there for the Hillside station for employees. Also to note. Your on the wrong side of the 4 track main line. The line to the left and the one that your on are EAST BOND off peak, the two lines on the right are WEST BOND off peak. During morning Rush you would be on the correct line. 3 tracks West bound morning rush hour. And 3 tracks East bound evening rush hour. One other note. As you depart Bellerose station, the crossovers are to move west bound traffic to the two right hand track and also merging of the other main branch that you see on your right side before you enter Bellerose station. That is a major junction. And as you approach Hollis station on your left there is a dwarf home signal that protects the Hollis Leed track to the Maintenance shops from the main line. Thank you for the video. This was a first ever of my home railroad area in a simulator. very well done. Thank You Gregory

Take the WSR, in real life it is a hive of activity with enthusiasts, families on a day out, photographers, volunteers, in the TSW version you get the same few figures as the other routes. The beaches are empty, the roads are empty, a shame really.

    When the cab signal indicator upgrades to a higher speed (i.e. from 15MPH to 70MPH), you have to let the train run its length before increasing speed. You immediately applied full throttle once getting that 70MPH code. Big no-no.

  • @PTGRail

    @PTGRail

    5 жыл бұрын

    Why? I totally understand it with line speed, but not signal speed. I don’t know of any other signal system that would require that, and as that information wasn’t supplied with this route nor reflected on the HUD, I drove the train in what appears to be the most logical manner. With the signal speed changing when not even at a signal, it’s difficult to even know when the full length of the train has passed this invisible point. The more I learn about different US railroad rules, the more confusing it becomes!

  • @6aNapoleon

    @6aNapoleon

    4 жыл бұрын

    I am a former LIRR Locomotive Engineer. This is how you determine when you have run your length:. It takes 9 seconds for one pair of cars to pass a fixed point at 15PH. AT 30 MPH, it takes 4.5 seconds. At 60 MPH, 2.25 sec., and so on. Since LIRR MU trains always operate in a set number of pairs, you simply multiply the single-pair speed by the number of PAIRS in the consist to derive the elapsed time before you can increase your speed. For example, at15PH, it takes 36 seconds for an 8-car train to run its length (i.e., 9 sec. x4 PAIRS). AT 30 MPH, it takes 18 sec., and so on. Once you become familiar with the route and the normal upcodes, you will be able to pick a point along the right-of-way that corresponds with the required time to run your length. It helps if you create a table with the calculations and put it on an index card.

    You know it’s okay to go 15 mph on switches right. I personally would have gone 20mph because it’s less sharp than other signal switches

    Great video there Pete, I can't seem to put my finger on it, but find TWS just don't have that pull as did TS when I first saw it. Really seems too regimented for a game, the person playing doesn't have to do much other than follow what is on the HUD for the most part and even in game it tells them where to stop. I mean in TS you have to try at least remember how to set up a train, this is more point and I will show your next move. TSW seems to be all lights and no depth. But as always with you show off something to the fullest. Thank you once again.

    This 100% TSW is a great game, I want to be clear I am not bashing it at all. However compared to its older brother it is lacking a lot. TS is great for the customisation, it has tools built in so you can make/edit routes, make your own scenarios, even add new assets (either paid or free) coupled with the fact you can pretty much drive how you like. Javelin on the Brighton line... why? Coz I can! HST to Portsmouth... again coz I can! 442 on the Isle of Wight... all together.. coz I can! Its that freedom we love, not even mentioning the years and years worth of extra DLC expanding on the game, workshop content that merges / extends lines. Once you have all that at your disposal, "High res ultra realistic" graphics just isnt enough. TSW take a GWR HST from Paddington to Reading. TS take a GWR HST from Paddington to Plymouth (Penzance once JT finish the add on) Yeah TS wont look as pretty, but damn it be fun doing the whole journey. (Assuming game doesnt crash)

    @@DukeDudeston with 64bit and devs who test scenarios properly its amazing. That freedom was there from the beginning, TSW and Unreal Engine has taken it to a place we as gamers have never had. Lack of freedom. TSW is a nice photo but gets old the next day

    Not a big fan of TSW, just so limited on what you can do, by watching this video will save me quite a few quid.

    Signal speed vs line speed is extremely confusing and I don’t know how they expect anyone to know what speed they should be going .... the game is very poorly done in this respect.
