If Kitty Wells and Patsy Cline hadn't been on this list, I, for one would have been disappointed (and very upset). I was sure that Dolly Parton would be number one with Loretta Lynn not too far behind. All the ladies on this list were very influential pioneers of women in Country music. Thank you for this trip down memory lane, Kevin and Gracie.

IMO Patsy, Tammy & Kitty are placed too low on this list. I disagree with Shania Twain. Sure she sold a lot of albums. You would to if you put out a cd of the same songs...one for country fans & one for pop fans. Kitty, Patsy, Loretta, Dolly, Tammy, Barbara and even Reba didn't have to do this to sell albums. Yes, you are hearing from a Country Music fan that loves traditional Country Music & the storytelling songs. Can't stand the music of today & singers that need auto tune. Sorry to those who think l'm wrong.

Hi Edna. I have to agree with you about traditional country music. We need more of that and less pop songs on the country charts. But that is my personal preference. All these episodes are focused on the best songs or artists and for the country ladies it was based on record sales, impact, chart position, etc. If I only played what I like on these episodes you would hear Willie, Waylon, George, Patsy, Loretta and A LOT of it.

I agree with Dolly Parton. If record sales alone was the criteria, Shania Twain would be Number 1. Mutt Lange has associations with 3 of the 5 singers. Huey Lewis, who worked with him, was in a video with Reba McIntyre. Lange wrote a song for Carrie Underwood. Lange produced and co-wrote with Shania Twain. Lange discovered her while co-wroting and co-producing Bryan Adams songs 🎵. The 1st 2 Lange produced albums were the most impactful country albums. The remaining albums leaned towards pop and rock.

I met both Barbara Mandrell, and Kitty Wells. Barbra left a lifetime impression on me. I was just a young buck in 1979 when I met her on a carnival midway, heading for the nearest place to grab something to eat from one the grab joints (a term for the concessions used by many carneys) to eat. It was the only time we'd cross paths. But what she said to me in our very brief chat was that she hoped we'd work together again someday. She recognized carneys as being a part of the entertainment world. That's possibly one of my most cherished memories.

3:11 -- This is probably the first or among the first "answer songs" to make it big in country music, right? And speaking of which, you know how once upon a time CMT did a top country songs of all time and Stand By Your Man made #1? I wonder if one of the things that put it over the top is that it got TWO answer songs...Johnny Cash's "Understand Your Man" and Ronnie Milsap's "I'm A Stand By My Woman Man"!

Beyonce has got a very very VERY long way to go before she is anywhere near these legendary ladies! As I've said before, imagine if Charlie Daniels, among the best fiddlers ever, suddenly took up piano and he and/or his fans got all butthurt because he didn't immediately get invited to play at Carnegie Hall?

For me I'd go with only the females who had more hits that had a more traditional country sound to them. That would knock out pretty much everyone post Reba from even being in contention. My top 2 are Loretta Lynn “Fist City” country's version of how Beyonce ruined Jolene. And Reba with “The night the lights went out in Georgia” puts her in second for me. Sadly I'm not familiar enough with the rest to rank them. Of course Patsy Cline and Tammy Wynette are there, but that's more from recognition than knowledge, “Crazy” is the only song between them I could name. Dolly, the issue I have with most the modern females is they venture into what I'd call soul music more than having the country sound. Terri Clark is one I'd give extra credit for her attire.

That's your view, Poncho, and I do respect it. While we should always honor those great ladies of the past, we can not shut the door on new and talented country singers. Traditional country singers are my personal favorites, but the CMTM honors all, as long as they had enough hits or enough of an impact on the genre. It is not just based on my personal tastes. Thanks for your comment and input.

Sorry, but Carrie Underwood is more pop than country. Have you ever heard of Patsy Cline, Kitty Wells, Loretta Lynn, Dolly Parton?. Barbara Mandrel was factory made for country music. Literally. From just past the toddler stage she was coached, trained and forged by some of the greatest musicians in the country music industry. As were her sisters. Y’all need to dig deeper into the country music archives.

Hi there. Patsy Cline, Kitty Wells, Loretta Lynn, and Dolly Parton are on this list of the best of all time. There are are multiple artists that may sound more pop than traditional country (Shania Twain) but this list is based on multiple factors including impact, record sales, chart position, etc. Maybe in the future we can do a list of more traditionally sounding country music singers. But Carrie Underwood, while not very traditional country sounding, is considered to be a country artist. She is a member of the Opry, awarded by multiple country award organizations and played on country radio. We go back to 1940 on the yearly episodes. So we do dig pretty deep. We hope you can check it out.
