That O'Brien guy is a troublemaker who should be deported. He's had many run-ins with the law and has been rescued many times.

I was in cartagena a few months ago with a friend and I must say, campared to the previous times ive been there I felt alot more unsafe. In the city center it does have a high concentration of police to protect everyone but STILL if you pay close attention to the people around, there are ALOT of sharks observing you to see if you're an easy target or if you're alone etc. Cartagena in my opinion isnt safe anymore, dont even think about going there alone in my opinion.

I was there in Nov and it felt like there's a sea of sharks observing us. My first time in 2015 felt very safe comparatively.

@chillycharles910 yes when I went in 2022, it was very chill, not that much people, I felt very safe but when I went there a few months ago ,I felt like a walking target. I've heard stories from even the locals and tourists that they are drugging people, they will walk up to you in a crowded place, blow some kind of substance in your face and now you're drugged that easily.

I was first in Cartagena in the early/ mid 80’s. It was Escobar territory. I went back a couple of months ago and it has completely changed for the better. There’s crime everywhere. You can not let down your guard. Crime in the U.S. is worse than most countries.

There are many other places where you can go and not have to worry about these things happening to tourists in Colombia. A Facebook friend just got mugged and nearly stabbed in Laureles on LA70. I fronted him money to get back home. I am glad I got “Colombia” out of my system before all of this crap started to happen.

Laureles is one of the most hunted areas by criminals. Tourists are easy pickings as no resistance is ever offered.

That is what I keep saying. I currently live in Costa Rica(for 3 years) and visit the Mayan Riviera and Antigua, Guatemela quite a bit. You don't have these issues there.

People think Colombia is just another country to visit. Colombia is only for advanced travelers. The culture there is conducive to the danger there. If you only have 2 weeks vacation choose somewhere else to actually relax. You wouldn’t travel through a random hood in the US, so don’t go to the country that is a whole hood.

i just left cartegena yesterday …. the people are beautiful the city is beautiful but the prices are high af lol. stay away from the drugs and be mindful of the company you keep. safe travels to everyone.

There is no safe areas in Columbia. If walking in broad daylight one has to be extremely vigilant ALL THE TIME! And that is stressful!! You go on vacation to relax and destress from America, and not to add more stress of safety to it People are getting st@@bbed even minding their own business just walking out and about, hotel staffs are kissing with gangs to rob you, or come to your room to rob you whilst you are away, anxiety of getting robbed, phone getting getting violently snatched and your bank details hacked at knife point, police are in the robbery too acts and you can’t trust them People are so desperate in Colombia, they will unalive you over nothing like $5, and they don’t care about it. The violent crimes is bad if you think America is violent, go and experience their violent crimes in south America and you will think America is more safer😂 It endless, and you can’t trust anyone over there. Every one is out to get you and scam you from immigration officers to lawyers to police, all up to no good Better vacation where it is safe. Not South America. 😮I hear, Costa Rica is ok, but do your research

The most accurate statement I've read yet. You think like I do. We see things dumb tourists are blind to. I have been going to MX for 35yrs. It's 10min from my house so it isn't uncommon to go 6-7 days a week to buy groceries, etc and get beer from breweries. All the time I see blind tourist being targeted and they don't even realize it. I've been many times until 3-4am and see the underbelly and the drunk idiot tourist thinking bc they did witness themselves hit up, that it doesn't exist which is light years from the truth.

I have lived in Costa Rica since December 2020 and it is very safe. Yes, there are parts where you want to weary of but its not like Colombia with the sharks constantlly circling, plotting, and scheming. I have 3 friends from Medellin who have lived in my town for 20 years. That should tell you something

Go have fun but keep it safe fellas. Learn from the mistakes of others. DC does a good job of reminding us and gives good advice too.

There are 195 countries in the world. A few you can't get into; most you can, especially as an American. Brothers still pick Colombia where the "Scope" is trained on you. I just think of all the cases of men who are probably too embarrased to admit this happened to them.

Not just that but getting foreigners money and they don't have to do it at gunpoint. They have a way to get your money ALWAYS (overcharging you). You just have to suck it up and drive on. Especially if you are with a gorgeous gal. Sometimes the vendors know the gals. The gals/girls take foreigners to those vendors to help them make a sale. Then they'd be winking their eye as they leave with a smile.

Passport “boys” never learn! My family is from Colombia but I’m an American that lives in America, I’m not desperate to go there like that, I was just there December 2023 for a week and came by. My first time I visited Colombia in 2013 I got into a bar fight, not to brag but I handled myself. Anyways stay alert guys, it can be a real life purge out there

I went to Cartagena last year for a week i had a blast but my people are Colombians my girl and her son while on the beach he met a couple of girls and they asked him to meet them at a club so my girl said we were going to the club to watch over him So we were just chillin why he was having a good time dancing we made sure nobody tried to take advantage of him now we are older and normally we dont go to clubs but we would not let him go by his self the people on the beach selling stuff can get a bit agressive but my girl told them in spanish to get lost and leave us alone now i would not go to Cartagena unless i was with someone who could speak fluent spanish Cartagena is safe now if your picking up chicks drinking doing drugs your putting your life at risk other than that you want have any problems and have a great vacation.

Until the government step up there's no need to go there it's just not worth it.

This is crazy. I have a feeling that this was due to self overdosing. I hope this is not the case. Prayers to the family. The 2nd man, from what I heard is basically in irregularity status in Colombia. This means he’s been overstaying the max allowed in Colombia. The most interesting thing is that Cartagena has been making lots of noise lately. It has completely silenced traveler related news in Medellin.
