Deadly Weekend In Medellin Colombia: An American and a Mexican Pass In Weekend of Tragedies

Deadly Weekend In Medellin Colombia: An American and a Mexican Pass In Weekend of Tragedies. This past weekend, two foreign tourists tragically passed away in Medellin, highlighting a concerning trend. Mexican Horacio Perez Ledezma, 54, was murdered in a restaurant, while American Clifford Allan Wilke, 66, was found dead in his hotel room under mysterious circumstances. With these incidents, the total number of foreign deaths in Medellin and the Aburrá Valley this year has reached 31.
Key Details:
Victims: Horacio Perez Ledezma (Mexican) and Clifford Allan Wilke (American).
Incident Locations: Provenza sector restaurant and Dann Carlton Hotel in El Poblado.
Circumstances: Ledezma was shot and later died in a hospital; Wilke's cause of death is pending autopsy results.
Statistics: This year, 15 Americans have died in Medellin, accounting for 50% of foreign deaths. The increase in deaths parallels the rise in tourism, with over 1.4 million visitors last year.
Medellin's Secretary of Security, Manuel Villa Mejía, emphasized ongoing efforts to protect tourists and dismantle criminal structures targeting visitors. Despite these efforts, the deaths of foreigners remain a pressing issue.
Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story.

I did Cartagena and Medellin trip a couple of years ago. Flew to Medellin from Cartagena and the day I arrived, I was told that someone was robbed at gun point in front of the hotel I was staying in. They said the victim was flashy and did not keep a low profile. I was with a group of guys in Medellin from the states that I had met in Cartagena. I was shaken at first but I was out and about the next day. I was even walking around at night in the neighborhood. When you travel abroad you have to be alert at all time. Don’t get drunk and don’t go out looking for drugs in a foreign country. Medellin is beautiful but dangerous.

Medellin is super dangerous...I watched 2 Americans get robbed at gun point in January in Patio Bonito by the Exit (part of El Poblado). Additionally both my maid and chef stole from me, caught them both red handed...and we had someone take a blow torch to get into our building. This mayor is driving away a ton of tourism by deflecting on the issues, now there is a low occupancy in hotels and AirBNBs, restaurant business is down, bars and club business is down.... Netflix will eventually do a documentary on this and it will blow up in Fico Guitterez face. This is bad bad stuff!!!

Would you just said I’ve been telling my friends for sometime now, tourist or finally finding other places to go. A lot of the people they treat us like we go there for little girls or to murder women. There are plenty of idiots that use the internet to see where they can get sex and drugs. They can get a few bullets, and scopolamine galore too. I first went to medellin in 2018 and I was blown away - I loved it. Only for a short three week vacation. I first stayed in Larelles at a friends place which I though was rather dull. Than his girlfriend took me to Provenza and Lleras Park and I was like - this is it. I loved it. Gustos, Santa fe Mall, El Tessoro, Gudape, La Isla Club, all the little clubs/bars/restaurants in lleras park and yes I was getting girls in lleras park. The Next year I came back again, loved it even more and met a colombian guy who is now like my brother. I an from a big tall 6 2" White Blond hair blue eyed guy from Queens NY - Jackson Heights which is basically little colombia. I had been hanging out in all the Colombian bars in Jackson hts for 10 years before I went to Colombia due to Colombian girl I met in one and this guy, my new friend was born in Queens - we are both the same age and he liked the same hard rock bands as me growing up in NY: ACDC, Judas Priest, Metallica, etc.. He is a tour guide in medellin and I was dating another girl from Medellin that I met in Queens and she was visiting family and came to stay with me at my hotel - The Greenview in Poblado for a couuple of days. I wanted to take a private tour of Gudape with her and I called an Tour Guide. This was the Colmbian guy who is now my best friend. We just hit it off and its like I new him my whole life. I had another amazing time, everywhere I went people loved me and I met many girls ( good girls and bad girls - Not all bad girls are bad, many are very nice). I had zero problems with anyone and I was out all night, drinking but I dont do drugs. Anyway That was another short trip - three weeks and I cried when leaving. When Covid hit - I got laid off from my Job and after about a year and a half I decided to move to Medellin - I stayed for two years and eventually wound up moving into my new best friends apt and we shared it together. I loved every second of being there - I hate NY. I went to all the same places as I mentioned above and did all the same things - met many great people and the Colombiab people were wonderful to me. ( I am a very good person, very very nice, I helped people with food, sone money, etc I did have a couple of incidents though - but I was not heeding advice I know not to do 1 - I was with a friend in Envigado and at like 1am or so we decided to go out and get some pizza. We were walking along El Poblado Blvd and walking by a dark contruction area. Than these two young hispanic guys came out from behind a tree, one with a big gun pointed right at me. I gave him all I had, my cell phone, debit card and like 150Thosand Pesos. Was not much - they got on their motorcycle and split but the guy dropped by Debit card which I recovered. This incident did not phase me. The 2nd incident - I was hanging in Llerss Park - I know many people there, having a great time. Anyway - I was a bit drunk and decided to get into one of thoses yellow cabs to go home. Ive halied many cabs but people alway told me dont take the cabs in the street. Anyway I did - so I dont remember all the details as I was drunk - but getting close to my place the gut had my cell phone and money ( not much cash) . We got to my bldg entrance which has a guard and this guy turns around and starts going back down the hill. I have no idea where he was taking me - but I opened the door and jumped out of the moving cab. It was over - I hurt my foot, and I was limping around for like two months until i finally went to the Dr. The foot was broken and they wanted to operate. I went right back to doing all the things I love about Poblado but cut out all of the things like I did above. 11 Months ago - I had to leave and Im back in NY. Buy the time I saw a Dr in NY the foot was healed. Regardless of those two incidents and all these stories im reading here- I miss Poblado So much, my friends. Ive traveled all over the world and that id my favirite place. I want to come back and live there. Im hoping that If you cut out the crazy stuff that its going to be safe. Am I crazy to thint this way. I am so depressed in NY - I

It's unfortunate when I walk down the street people don't know the difference since I stand out because of what I look like.

Ive been a victim, and most of the people I know there also, Colombians and foreigners, Its very dangerous! Dont go there, lots of nicer places to visit!

There's a difference between manslaughter and murder in most places. They didn't intentionally plan to kill the person. Intent is the key in a lot of cases. They intended to drug and rob them NOT kill them. It's hard to know because you don't know Colombia penal code.. every penal code varies from state to state and of course from country to country. I think that's what you're missing. That's how people in the USA get manslaughter charges instead of murder charges.

There is definitely something more going on as sicario hits usually deals with unpaid debt, personal beef between 2 people or groups. The reading of victims who died is certainly a wake up call and quite sad. Hopefully this helps travelers make better decisions when in country. If a victim dies due to scopolamine, that is definitely murder on my book.

I met the mayor last year November, I was suggesting to him some ideas, I was in Buenos Aires for 4 months and it's the safest in south America, and was telling the Medellin Mayor that in Buenos Aires, they have police on different blocks in the main tourist areas, in Medellin if you see 10 police you normally see them together, ineffective, they need to be individual spread out, so more presence every where, and this is from talking to experts in argentona how they reduce crime significantly, on the other hand, the lack of police in provenza and surrounding busy areas , especially tourist contributing alot to Medellin economy, shows irresponsibility, they can do better, criminals only target areas they think they get do crime and get away
