Trackside: Vintage Roots Blown EMD's on 9098 SSR grain from Deniliquin- 21/4/21

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Video from the evening of the 21st of April 2021 and another grain train from Deniliquin, this time operated by Southern Shorthaul Railroad and hauled by the all roots-blown EMD combination of P14, S317, S302 and T363.
Upon arrival in Bendigo, a fifth loco was attached, with P16 being retrieved from the fuel point and added to the middle of the combination between the two S Classes, with the shunt moves to fetch it also shown. The train is then seen for a final time at Kangaroo Flat, making very slow progress through the station for reasons unknown.
Trains seen in order are:
9098- P14, S317, S302 and T363
9098- P14, S317, P16, S302 and T363

Great combo of power nice to see some of what we refer to as F units still working Revenue Service somewhere. Great night time shooting

They're rather common in service here, with SSR having seven of the type in service as well as a couple of the double-ended design. There's a few more in preservation and with other mainline operators as well.

What a lovely discordant clamour those crossing clangers make in the first shot. Fortunately the sound of the train soon drowns it out.

Hard to find a crossing without the sirens nowadays, it's for the best but they're definitely not helpful when videoing!

It's not the biggest combo I've got on SSR trains of late but still well worth seeing. Thanks.

Just out of curiosity, did they pick up the extra loco for the grades?

  • @Greensleeves94

    @Greensleeves94

I don't think so as the two S's, P and T should have been enough to handle the grades (and they have before), I think P16 was just being transferred to Melbourne and attaching it was an easy way to do so.

At 8:50 the Train rolls through the Point despite it being not being in the direction of travel? Curious if that’s a safe idea and how does the Train Change the point by itself? Also at 15:10 it’s VL65 not 60 lol.

It changes the direction of the points just by the weight of the loco and the flange of the wheel. Not really a problem for hand thrown points like the one there.

P11 is SSR Bendigo North 'shops shunter. P12 and P15 are still with V/Line on BG. P13 is with V/Line on SG. P14, P16, P17 and P18 in service with SSR on BG. P19 and P21 are owned by Regional Connect and stored at Ettamogah. P20 is owned by PN but is at Newport I believe with 707 Operations. P22 is operational on SG in VR livery with the SRHC and owned by Regional Connect. P23 is nearly operational in VR livery on BG with the SRHC and owned by Regional Connect.

Thanks for that. They’ve been workhorses for many years their role overshadowed i guess by the more well known units. Used to see them alot on the Bacchus Marsh and occasionally Ballarat services in the 90s

It's a type of supercharging used in earlier EMD models whereas later EMD's (as well as most GE's and ALCO's etc.) are turbocharged. More info can be found here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roots-type_supercharger
