Tracking Down Serbia's Danube River Pirates

Ойын-сауық

VICE Serbia explores how pirates, mostly through deals made with international boat crews, illegally load off oil, ores or fertilizers that they later sell on black market. Such activities are often followed with great risks and violence between rival gangs is quite common.
The Danube flow through Serbia is 600 kilometers long and a lot of international transport goes along the river. Serbia has been blacklisted by a number of international companies because of illegal river trade or, more commonly said, piracy.

@@unknownentity8256 because I been there several times and have family living close, and never any human traficking or pirate style raiding was known. There was human traficking only during times of Ceausescu in Romania and my mother even worked for UN to receve the Romanian refuges escaping communist rule there and comming to Yugoslavia, but that was in the 1980s in totally other context. PS:Sorry because of my language in my earlier comment.

These people are in business with the people working on the cargo ship and everything is done through deals. They do not harm any civillians or cause any problems to anyone. Smederevo is actually quite nice.

Generally, all factors considered, people categorize it as belonging to southeast Europe (Balkans), with the northern province Vojvodina belonging to central Europe, which is way more accurate culturally. If you're gonna separate Europe in half based on culture, it is still east, so you are still right but for the wrong reasons. The distinction is more prominent in Europe i guess.

There really is no pirating going on. Dear Vice, you used to be such an amazing outlet for non mainstream news but anymore you are just clickbait......nobody would watch this if it didnt have pirates in the title. I understand "Organized crime on the Danube" (or something closer to what the actual story represented) wont bring as many views but think of your reputation........vice used to be a decent outlet for non mainstream news, now its just clickbait articles and strippers for the hbo show.

true. And diesel is easy to sell to people who use a lot of it like construction companys and farms. I know in the US locally people buy hundreds of gallons at a time to keep on there farms, if there was a large black market here I could see that being exploited.

south america and mexico have in there own way pirates. southerb asian countries have pirates but there mode of operenda seems to vary from hostages, to carteling, and some time just boat jacking from anything rafts to jet skis. but when im at the public pool i tend to steal floaties from small children. thus i too live the pirate life for me.

Foreign companies illegally fishing off the coast of Somalia and toxic dumping lead to so-called Somali pirates. Something your western media never showed you. Somali "pirates" are the good guys here! Talk about evil mega corporations 😒
