Track work, the equipment we will use

Фильм және анимация

This is the stuff we bought in North Carolina. I went on a road trip to pick it up.

Just a quick suggestion: Don’t waste your time and money trying to get the small engines going. They’re toast! I would adapt each piece of equipment to receive hydraulic lines from the mini excavator. Instead.

Y'all definitely got three project pieces there but they will be a big help over just physically doing the trackwork. Now it will be physical with some mechanical help trackwork. The ballast vibrator is the best tool out of the bunch as far as helpful. It's really hard to get ballast packed under and around the ties by hand. It takes an enormous amount of time and energy to do so. Nice old equipment. Really neat that y'all are going to fix and use this stuff. I always like seeing older equipment brought back to working order and put back to work instead of put on display and not utilized for it's intended purpose. Good video. Stay safe. -Wil 👍

Echoing earlier suggestions: replace the engines, concentrate on getting the hydraulic selector valves and cylinders operational. Save the engine restoration for your old age hobby. Or scrap.

The first one looks like a Kohler engine, the second looks like a Wisconsin. Find a small engine guy with gray hair and they will get them going. When you shut them down, be sure to spin the engine until you feel it on the compression stroke, that way both valves are closed. Moisture can get in through the muffler and make the exhaust valve stick open. I wish I was closer to get those babies running.

Since you got those so cheap, I'd take off the engines and replace them with Harbor Freight units. They are reliable, cheap, and start every time. I wish you were closer to me, I work on and fix up stuff like that all the time, I would help get it all working.

The hydraulics will probably be the easy part. Hopefully then engines all run. Worst case would be having to replace one of those as it will make them less of a bargain!

I’m pretty skeptical about the tamper and jack. Not only are they in bad shape, but I think they are likely poor at their job when in shape. But that tie extractor…it looks to be in better shape. Hydraulic lines and valves are easy to replace. Repowering it with a new pump is easy too. And it will save a ton of time and backbreaking work if it works. I’d focus on it.

Good to see you're investing in more rail and tie equipment, but be careful when buying some of these used equipment. Not any good if you spend more in fixing than in actual use, especially when on a tight budget. Be safe guys!

My experience of undertaking maintenance of way with dated tools is you will not achieve a output in terms of ties replaced per day to justify the effort required . Don't bother repairing the gas engines just pipe the hydraulics to a pump which works. The tamping tool will be difficult to use in contaminated ballast.

Weights about 65 pounds and don’t try to move with ur knee while it’s operating. It will shake all the fillings out of your teeth. However, it’s a lot better than tamping by hand.

Might be a cheap deal, but what you don't spent in money, you spend in labour getting it going. Echoing other comments: replace the engines with either new engines or hydraulics, get it going for the least amount of man-hours. Maybe donate the old engines to a club who can appreciate them 🙂👍
