I thought Bolt's 9.58 would be first, but when I saw Zelezny I thought "well deserved". Zelezny was a beast. I feel he's a bit underrated, and not as well known as other track and field legends. I'd definitely put him up there with Bubka, Lewis, Bolt, Johnson, El Guerrouj, Bekele, Gebrselassie, Moses, Oerter etc. He threw over 90 meters 53 times in his career, that's more times than the 18 others that have thrown over 90 meters combined. 3 Olympic golds, one silver, and 5 Olympic finals in total. 3 World championship golds. Had the longest throw of the year 7 different years. He won 134 out of 200 finals during his 20-year senior career (13 out of 14 finals in 1996, 15 out of 17 in 1994, 14 out of 15 in 1993, 10 out of 11 in 1991) He threw 92.80 when he was 35 and 85.92 when he was 40. His 92.80 throw was in 2001, and no one threw longer than that in 16 years. In one competition Zelezny threw over 90 meters in 5 of his 6 throws. And in Sheffield 1993 he threw over 95 meters two times in the same competition. In the 1995 World Championships, he QUALIFIED with at throw of 90.12m, and in the 2001 World Championships, he qualified with a 90.76m throw (that is longer than the season best of most years, including 2019) This is Michael Jordan/Wayne Gretzky/Michael Phelps -levels of dominance. And yeah, he's also thrown a softball 128.63 meters (422 feet) Just insane.

How many people run compared to jumping...or discus or decathlon etc....more difficult for middle and long distance runners to be in the top...(look at the ratio).. 3'43 for a Mile is the greatest track and field record ever...

@@animus3328 3:43.13 (1292 points) is a fantastic record, but I'd say Hicham's 3:26.00 (1303 points) for 1500 is slightly more impressive. It is a higher score on IAAF's scoring tables (a 3:26.00 on the 1500m equates to a 3:42.34 on the mile). Zelezny's 98.48 equates to 1355 points, which is unbelievable. Hicham has run the mile 0.27 seconds (3.5 points) faster than the second-fastest guy (Noah Ngeny) while Zelezny has thrown 4.04 meters (63 points) longer than number 2 (Johannes Vetter). That is a much greater margin.

I don't think Zelezny's 98.48 ever will be broken. I believe 3:43 will be broken in the future. I think Jakob Ingebrigtsen is a great contender for the record. Being Norwegian myself, I certainly hope he beats it.

I might add that I used to watch a lot of javelin because of my countryman Andreas Thorkildsen. He was great (two Olympic golds, 4 WC medals), and he had an impressive personal record of 91.59. And while 91.59 is great, it's still lightyears behind 98.48.

I can't help but wonder if the glamour associated with the 100m makes a big difference in why the long jump record isn't being challenged in recent decades. I think every great 100m runner has great long jump potential, but the marketability of being the 100m champ, and therefore de facto "fastest man alive," just makes it a lot more profitable to focus on the 100m and skip the long jump. I think everyone who's heard of Carl Lewis knows he was fast, but not everyone understands he was the greatest long jumper.

It's not really an unbreakable record if the person who broke the record just did it and is on form. Unless you think it's impossible for Warholm to break the record again, then it's a very breakable record. This isn't a list of most impressive records, it's a list of most unbreakable because the records have stood for so long and don't seem likely to be challenged soon.

It's not a real WR though tbh. The wind gauge at the LJ pit going in the same direction read +5.0 m/s and the 100m wind gauge read 0.0 m/s while everyone felt huge winds. 10.49 is very wind aided, the real WR is Flo-Jo's 10.61. A much more realistic time as Marion Jones, Jeter and maybe one other person have gone into the 10.6s and there are 10.7 runners recently like Shelly-Ann & Elaine Thompson.

A world record that had been so hard/impossible to beat for so many years, and then she came to Rio and just obliterated an impossible record that had been standing untouchable for 23 years. Excellent list. Like that you included some amazing records that don't get so much attention. Of course in doing so you left out a few records that many would have expected to see here. 100M men, 100m women, 1500m men, 3000m men, mile men. If you took out the women's 800M for what looks like a questionable record, one of these others could be inserted. Many question Flo Jo, but I doubt there is anyone who doesn't question the nature of the women's 800m record. I will say no more.

Has anyone seen Martina Koch’s WR for the ladies 400? Like Kratochvila, both were so heavily doped that that’s what makes them impossible to beat. Glad you put Zelezny first.

Just couple of days ago in Monaco's Diamond league, they set a new WR on 5000m (12.35)
