A side by side of him walking and you running would have been awesome for some perspective. You’re right, it is obvious he is walking fast, but just how fast is hard to imagine.

Amazing video again to put pro athlete's speed into perspective. Absurd that someone can walk at that pace!
During the Olympics, I would like to advocate for a regular person to compete alongside the Olympians so we can see how crazy Olympians really are.

Race walking often looks vaguely comic and the skill is almost invisible when you watch the elites at major championships. This is such a brilliant insight into just how incredible top tier race walking really is.

I have seen interviews with Tom and him talking about his parkrun experiences. He has said people get annoyed that he is walking past people who are full on running which is really funny to me

@@Mallchad Nobody is capable at running at max effort, your body is literally hard-coded not to let your muscles work at max strength outside of life-or-death scenarios because they would tear themselves apart. Which is why it's kinda silly to define "max effort" as "the literal physical limits of the human anatomy" as opposed to "the best result a given person can produce, given their current state and training" - which is what I'm pretty sure what the people above you were referring to, hence the disagreement
I would have loved to see a race between you two, you running and Tom walking. I think that would have really given a good perspective on how Tom is actually moving

Was thinking the same. I've just about got used to being overtaken at parkruns by women with twins in buggies, 11 year old girls, why not someone walking.... hell, let's have them spinning plates off 2 metre poles while they're at it, juggling....

@@DeltaInsanity yes, a well motivated mother with two young children in a buggy can knock a parkrun out in 22:xx or 23:xx, I always shout words of encouragement as they fly by
I am a race walker. Started 33 years ago when a demolished knee meant I couldn't run any more. Good to see someone trying the sport seriously and respectfully. Mind you, I'm a bit peeved that you did your rookie lap faster than I can do one in training these days....🥴🥴 Bozzy, of course, it at another level entirely .

@@Mike-me3sp Hi, yes. I only ran for a couple of years in my early 30s, trying distances to see what suited me best. I did a marathon in a little over 3 hours, 10K times were in high 30 mins, 38/39. I had had an accident at 14 in which my left knee was badly bashed up and never fixed. I did Morris dancing for about 10 years, bouncing up and down in unsuitable shoes on hard surfaces, then a few years of road running. The combined impact of these activities finished off the damage to my knee that had begun at 14.

Or if Tom mugged someone and they ran away but turned to look behind them and see him rapidly gaining ground while still walking. Actually terrifying.
Tom can probably comfortably walk an entire marathon is less than 3 hours.

He can, although I believe Chris Maddocks has the fastest British time for walking the marathon. He did the London Marathon in around 2h50. Not an official record though, as the Marathon isn't an official race-walking distance

The WR on the 50km race walking is 3:32, boil that down to 42.195 and you get a bit over 2:59. Scale the 20km record up to a marathon you get 2:42. First thing you notice is that there is a pretty small gap between those two, but the bottom line is that 3 hours for a marathon is close to WR pace. Given that Maddocks was never world class, that 2:50 marathon looks hella fishy. Which sounds obvious when you consider that there were no walking judges.

I think it's unfortunate that people associate speed with running and being slow with walking. The reality is that the only real difference is that when you're walking, you always have at least one foot on the ground, whereas with running you don't have to have any on the ground at all. Walking at speed is significantly more efficient as you lose a lot of the up and down and left to right motions that are just wasted energy.
Tom's a top man. I've been following him for years. As someone who has a single British Race Walking Gold (100 miles in 2017) I find it helps enormously with ultra-running. I made the switch to running in 2019 but have found most people walk a good proportion of the longer races (100 miles and up). Being able to walk as quickly as most people run is a huge gain. Especially because, as your video points out, walking uses the rear chain (glutes, hamstrings, hips) where running is quad/calf dominant. I feel like I'm resting my running muscles when I switch to race-walking for 15-20 minutes.

Walking correctly, uses very little energy, you're basically just using the legs to hold you up, rather than to move you forward. It's a really weird sensation the first few times you do it, but as somebody who used to fill online orders at a grocery store, there were days where I'd walk 5 or 6 miles inside in a day, and if I were using my legs to move me forward, I'd be exhausted. (I walked hundreds of miles around the same building during the time I was doing that in a very literal sense) By the end, I had it figured out where I was basically just leaning forward and having to slow myself down as the cart would be effectively running away from me quicker than I wanted to be walking.

@@SmallSpoonBrigade You're basically not using your quads to propel yourself forward. There's like no knee extension on the drive forward. It looks like it's all glutes and other hips muscles

I have never competed, but I remember in gym class in high school our teacher made us do long races around a lake. I was always an awful runner, but I still did well since I could cover a lot of ground taking a break and walking real fast instead! It seemed like I was the only one to have figured that out.

At the start of the year I injured my knee pretty badly and couldn't run at all without huge amounts of pain. It took around 5 months to get back to running but during that time around the 2 month mark I found I could walk as hard as I wanted with no pain at all. So I started focusing on walking fast. I thought a 12 min mile was quick, I looked it up and found the race where Tom set the record and had my mind totally blown. My best mile running ever was a 5:00 min, and these days any time I dip into the 5's is a great day. After learning about his walking speed I started really going at it, today my record for the 1 mile walking is a 8:32 and I want to get into the 7's. Tom is a huge inspiration for me. It's also been 10 months since the injury and I am finally running full speed ahead again. Did my first marathon and ultra this year! I still regularly walk hard. It's such a completely different animal. Huge respect for diving into the world of race walking! Video was awesome!

Not wrong about those 12 minute miles, I'm just a hiker but I sometimes give myself pace challenges if I know ground is reasonably flat for a mile ahead... and getting into the 12s is genuinely hard, boots etc don't help but still. Every .1mph above 4.3mph or so takes a lot of effort.
Doing these more esoteric sports is a good idea for a series - Kipchoge etc is still interesting but everyone knows about those sports already and the stars aren't accessible in person. It was interesting to see how race walking works & how impressive it actually is at the elite level.

Did this in school as a kid, the high school track coach would make anyone who made fun of race walkers train with them. First lap would change their perspective on race walk forever, they all had reactions like you on your lap... I knew Tom's $100 was safe at 2 minutes. Great video!

Downhill is a lot difficult than flat ground. The reason being is its difficult to maintain the proper form or technique while battling gravity.

You are right, this sport needed the exposure. I am floored by how fast his walking pace is. Sub 20 minute 5k is such an amazing standard of RUNNING, and Tom clears that easily walking... Fantastic content as always.
It’s literally incredible to think he walks a 5k in sub 20…it has literally taken me 4 years to try and run a sub 20 and I’ve still not managed it….I literally feel when I’m running 4min km’s that I’m absolutely flying..incredible someone could be walking faster than that pace, I just can’t get my head round it!

I was thinking the same. I do a few progression runs at ParkRun and the last KM is usually 4:00-4:20, and yet Tom walks a KM way faster than that like you say! It’s absolute madness!

The crazy thing is is you aren't an average athlete either but, it's a very good perspective regardless. I really like this series cause it does help people grasp the big difference elite athletes have comparatively.

New to the channel but 1/3rd in and I love it. Semi pro climber, outdoor guide, cycle courier, ski + board, bmx, rugby, kayak, tons of long hikes - I love moving and you clearly do too!

I was working in the school just over the park as this was filmed. It's awesome how fast Tom is I would have loved to have seen it live.. Parkrun are spending this October encouraging walking. Maybe some racewalkers could show us how it is done.
The amount of lactic acid that builds up in my legs when race walking is more than I can handle compared to when I'm running the same distance. These athletes are so underrated.

That was a great video Mark. I'm impressed with how you improved with Tom's coaching advice. That 2:25 lap time is just a tad over 30-minute parkrun pace, which is above average!
Such a great channel and the content makes me pi$$ myself at least once in every video! I genuinely look forward to seeing a video released every time one comes out! This was my Sunday evening viewing whilst stretching/foam rolling/strength training a dodgy self-diagnosed IT Band/knee issue after a 57 mile Ultra 2 weeks ago……ahead of a 47 mile Ultra in 2 weeks time, which I expect will be done with very little running in the preceding 4 weeks due to the injury, how very “Mark Lewis” of me that will be. 😂😂
At 11:19 when you asked who walks like that I literally chuckled to myself. I was born with a disability where my knees have no bend and no ankle movement, so "raises hand". Me I walk like that for 37 years lol.

This was fun to watch. My walking claim to fame is still holding my high school's record for the fastest 4 mile walk. The PE final is a 4 mile walk (running not allowed) and doing it under an hour is an A. I was the only person that year who even trained for it (lol) and I walked it at 42:17, my first mile was a 9:32. And this even with getting my calendar messed up and doing it in regular shoes and skinny jeans!

Translate 4 miles to metric for me mate...that's gotta be 16 laps innit? My fastest 15 lap (6k) is around 42, gotta train a little to go one lap further in that time!

Yes perspective is everything when making judgements and comparisons. I always knew and appreciated that Sebastian Coe was fast but this was really brought home to me when out and about driving a Fire Engine around the town of Loughborough one day. Seb studied/worked at the University and part of his training plan was running parallel to the long and straight dual carriageway that passed the Uni and Fire Station by. Ok, we weren’t on blue lights but nevertheless driving alongside of him really gave one a sense of how fast the guy was moving and I mean fast. 😊

Brilliant video. Not only highly entertaining and hilarious, but a great eye opener into how incredible elite athletes are.
When I pause I see his both feet are just barely in the air for a moment but it’s almost indiscernible…people could hardly tell but it means a big part of the sport is just finding the line of how much you can get away with and still call it walking, it’s a bit arbitrary and I’m not surprised that it’s not a popular sport

I remember watching this record years ago. Being in the military, we have a two mile run where walking is "allowed but frowned upon," and I always loved telling the fastest runners that a man could walk the two mile MINUTES faster than they ran it, and then show them the video of him setting the world record. Race walking definitely breaks your brain when you watch it as a bystander and then realize the pace is beyond my dead sprint
Great video, Mark. It's like you've read my recent postings on Facebook in the "Old Running Results and Pictures" group, where I've been critiquing Race Walking - and Tom in particular - that it's a mock sport, because all the elite athletes are lifting and the winner is invariably going to be the one that can lift the most, and get away with it. I'll be making my own video analyses on this topic at some point. You got close to what I've got in mind and like others have said, it would have been good if you had raced Tom over 400m with you running flat out and him walking flat out so we could see his strides versus your strides. You are 100 percent correct in your analysis early in the video about how unfeasible it is to walk at those speeds and that is because those are running speeds, no matter what the elite calibre of the race walker.
He's so humble and positive. Great guy.

As both a runner and speed walker, I can tell you speed walking is harder than running. You also can burn more calories. It looks funny, but it is very hard. I used to train with runners and they were shocked when they had to keep up with me. Especially up hills!

Great video! Love your channel! Many contend serious race-walkers have the best-developed aerobic systems of all athletes. Kind of a shame running coaches don't prescribe it as part of routine training for endurance events. I guess that might be due to it using different muscles than running (?).

I started with walking a couple months ago as a way to be more active. I've slowly been working on my walking mile time and my pr is currently 13:08 and I felt like hot shit when I hit that. Seeing Mark walk a sub 10:00 mile pace with a morning of training was humbling to say the least 😅

I do power walking with 5 lb. dumbells for an average pace of 6 km/h. It is extremely difficult and I average about 2000 arm swings with the weights. 10000 lbs of DB toning each arm and an awesome low impact cardio walk. Strict technique, as in Tom's race walking is the key to success with any exercise routine.

Just wanted to say I really appreciate how you balanced the sheer enormity of how impressive race walking is as a sport (and Tom’s skill) while also showing how absurd the sport appears to someone who isn’t familiar with it. Great video!

Seriously impressive Love your videos Mark I tried some fast walking a few years back after recovering from an ankle and knee injury I tried a few short fast walks and got my 1k time to around 6:50 and walked a parkrun in just on 36 mins It was an interesting challenge but I still prefer to run
