Think about all the things that have to go right. Powell was an amazing jumper but not particularly fast or a powerful runner like Carl Lewis. Sprinter over the last 35 years have became increasingly stronger (maybe with or without steroids) but have for the most part abandoned jumps. History shows 29 feet is nearly impossible. Beaman jumped 29’2” at altitude and nearly by mistake with as many fouls he had. I think the next 29 foot jumper will have to be a sub 10 second 100m sprinter with at least 38” plus vertical jump. However the way long jump is promoted and sprinters just sprint now-it will be another 30 years.

@@dan1e1473 eh, weight is irrelevant. Greg Rutherford was nearly 200lbs. Bo Jackson was a 6’9” high jumper in high school yet easily the over 200 lbs and Jonathan Edwards could blow away in a stiff wind. If you are strong enough to carry you own load weight doesn’t mean anything.

It's ridiculous that there's only one anemometer at an event, given what's at stake. It's also ridiculous that no-one asked the official to move.

Look at the weather conditions, you couldn’t see from one end of the runway for the long jump to the pit at the other end; it wouldn’t be surprising if no official could see the guy standing next to the gauge at the time…

What's not mentioned - at all - is that fog was not moving at all! Zero wind. The fog is a perfect barometer for whether the anemometer was interfered with and proves there was no wind.

They juice the best (technically) instead of the most deserving (if there is such a thing). Eventually we'll have to legalise it all and let athlete's pick and choose. It's the only way we can research the effects - good and bad. I'll trust old school/ naturally occurring drugs rather than that nonsense they cook up in a lab and 'legal highs'. As a long jumper maybe you can confirm... It's probably because focusing on pacing your strides to coincide with the jump mark probably inhibits you from just running and jumping as far as you can.

I've read that Carl Lewis during his best years has twice jumped past the 9.00m limit: 9.06 and 9.11 - although foul, these jumps were measured from the spot of take-off....

Lewis had one jump at the same track where FloJo’s 10.49 was set, and supposed to be over 9.00 meters - but one spike mark was found in the plasticine used as a foul detector beyond the foul line.

Do a little homework on doping even the Russian state sponsored scandal and you will see that low population countries, especially island countries have an advantage. Since everyone knows someone in a small country they can see WADA at the airport it’s pretty easy to sound the alarm and prepare for an in coming test. Not all proven performance enhancing drugs/hormones are on WADA’s banded list either so it not entirely cheat proof. Besides testosterone(not the designer analogs) leaves the body pretty quickly. So don’t be surprised if years from now someone reveals Bolt was dirty. For years he was known to be a bit lazy despite how gifted he was.

I feel like we can create a calculated metric for jumping that isn't just "This was a legal jump"; if wind and elevation are being used to gain advantages just factor them into the scoring, or say screw all that and throw it into the record book and just highlight the environmental details (wind, elevation, humidity, etc.)

Ivan Pedroso's 8.96 m is not the only "World Record that technically does not exist". In 1992 the german female long jumper Heike Drechsler jumped a 7.63 m with a tailwind of 2.1 meters. Funfact: Drechsler's competition in 1992 was in Sestriere, too.

90s Track athlete here... (Jumps) We all knew Ivan was going to be the GOAT for Long Jump. He was the only one that we would have bet to break 9m. Cuba also produced Javier Sotomayor, the only man to clear 8ft in the High Jump.

Would love to see more about great athletes from countries that aren’t widely know to be competitive in the sport

I remember this as a teenager in Cuba. The Italians were giving Ferraris as prizes for breaking a record. We were all waiting for Pedroso to bring a Ferrari to Cuba but sadly he "only" got a Mercedes Benz, which compared to Cubans' chances of getting any car in their lives was already a supercar.

@@CaneFu i remember a friend asked me to jump chairs in the school hall... testing out my jump for fun. I got up to a crazy number got to get in touch with him to confirm this. If i jumped 12 chairs then i made it beyond the 8 meters which was 12 years ago and that's dead ass crazy!

I remember watching Carl Lewis take off well behind the board on a tremendous jump, I mean like almost a foot, I think it would have been over 9m but we’ll never know!

Carl is the greatest long jumper in history. Even that day that Powell broke the LJ WR, Carl jumped 29 feet a bunch of times (i think 4) but they were windaided. Something crazy like that. He was killing it but just couldn't beat Powell that day. But Carl won 4 Olympic Gold medals in the long jump & could have possibly won a 5th one but America boycotted the 1980 Olympics in Russia. I hate politics!

I remember Ivan Pedroso jumping beyond 9m in training.

Actually it does matter. I worked in sports medicine with elite athletes for over 26 years, and I'm going to tell you something: They ALL will sell their soul in order to win. What that means is, they ALL cheat. At the world class level, you can rest assured that they're cheating. The question is, will any of them get caught? And that includes EVERYbody who's competed in the last 30+ years.

It just may be legit, but they have to give a lot of consideration to why the individual stood in front of the meter only on his jumps. 3 of the 4 jumps considered legal were made by him and each of his, someone was blocking the wind meter. It even seems suspicious to me and I understand why they questioned it.

Why in the world are we still measuring long jumps from a fixed point instead of from the front of the jumpers foot? I understand that 100 years ago this was needed, but we have the technology to identify exactly where that jumpers foot is when it leaves the ground. It should be the distance from takeoff to landing, not a fixed point to landing.

I can't help it .... my all-time favorite JUMP, from any one individual, is still Bob Beamon's 8.90m. I know it's not the official WR... And I'm aware of the advantage of high altitude. But in terms of wow moments for long jumpers.... it's difficult to argue. Plus, it still LOOKS like the greatest leap of all-time. His air time, his height... His unusual style ... all make that jump the best for me. On top of that, he destroyed the previous WR with that leap. Something that'll never be repeated even if Mike Powell's WR is broken. I do see some incredibly gifted jumper coming along and finally jumping over 9m ... might be next generation, but someone will eventually break the 9m Mark.

If an organization assumes, that someone "might" have blocked the wind-meter (while keeping the meter "unblocked" was anyway this organization´s responsibility towards the athletes), and cannot surely prove that it was the case, then the record must simply count, since the rules are the rules, always. One can afterwards say, that the organization failed the expectations, but still cannot blame Pedroso for anything... So, according to the same rules that this organization set, the record is valid, even if the organization won´t admit it.

To Ciclo Rota BH: Regardless of whether or not it was Pedroso’s job to check the wind gauge (Obviously, it wasn’t.) isn’t the point. And you don’t get it. The official wasn’t trying to block the display, he was trying to block wind from getting to the gauge so the actual wind reading wouldn’t show up. And Pedroso would have been the beneficiary of this chicanery. Tell you what. Let’s include the what ifs. Include this jump and we’ll also include the Carl Lewis jump which was ruled a foul and most people dispute that. Most people there called it a clean jump. It was over 30 feet, so Ivan still wouldn’t have the record. He was a good jumper but is still third behind Powell and Lewis by all measures.

The end of the board is not the line of a fair or foul jump. The last 10-12cm of the board is a piece of clay so it is easily identified if the jumper made a mark in it to tell if the jump is good or not. Watching the slowed jump it's easy to see his toe is easily 5cm past the end of the clay area of the board which means he's at minimum 15cm past the legal jump line. Taking that in to consideration this jump, if it had been absolutely perfect on the board would still have come up short.

I wonder if the story would have been same if a Cuban held the record and an American found himself in this kind of situation.

Well, above or below sea level should be equated for statistically.

The long jump is all about the tiny details it would seem.

1. There are other instances of Italian cheating in Italy in the long jump. See the Giovanni Evangelisti incident, WC in Rome. 2. Regarding the "long foul" -- the board looks like a 20 inch system, a 16 inch board and a 4 or 6 inch plasticine. It looks as though on plant his toes are beyond the plasticine. Being generous and assuming it's a 4 inch, the minimum foul would be 10 cm. If he was over the plasticine, it would be more. So, if people think he jumped 9.03, it's plausible that the actual distance (foul or not) of the jump was around 8.93.

For me this has always been the world record :) I ratify it.

Doubt that's accurate given the consistent wind measurements during the whole tournament.

One would think that such a vital piece of equipment would have a large zone painted around it and possibly bright ropes at waist level to keep people out of that zone. A security guard to prevent tampering would be good too. "sir, if I have to ask you to move again you will be escorted out."

You're quite young, but I was 15 in '95 and watched his highlights live including Sestriere. Back then it has been reported that Pedroso has jumped over 9.03 meters in training that year. So yes, he is the greatest long jumper ever, but unofficially unfortunately.

Pedroso's 8.96 m mark comes out to 29.39633 roughly 29.4 ft and his illegal 9.03 m comes out to 29.62598 ft a little over 29.5 ft! That's just incredible! Hopefully, soon enough there will be someone who will reach the magical 9.15 m or 30.01969 ft (30 ft) mark.

How can you do this entire report without explaining why that person was allowed to stand in front of the anemometer?

This is why we see fogs lift, clouds high in the sky and not at ground level. So, this great jumper not only had the advantage of altitude, he had even thinner air to jump through. Less resistance. What a jump, for sure, under any circumstances! *Does anyone recall Carl Lewis supposedly fouling a jump at altitude that many claim was over 30 feet?

Fog is due to the water vapour condensing to water droplets, so it is actually denser.

At 18 atomic units, water vapor is lighter than diatomic Oxygen (32 units) and diatomic Nitrogen (28 units). The more water vapor that displaces the other gases, the less dense that air will become. Ask any pilot: Humidity affects the way an airplane flies because of the change in pressure that accompanies changes in humidity. As the humidity goes up, the air pressure for a given volume of air goes down. This means the wings have fewer air molecules to affect as they are pushed through the airmass (to create lift). Fewer molecules = less lift. But, for a non-aerodynamic long jumper, it simply means jumping through less resistance. Still? A super great jump!!!

@@bradreid6057 I am well aware that water vapour is less dense than air. I was making the point that fog contains water droplets (i.e. liquid). Since fog typically occurs in cooler conditions, the lower temperature may be a more important factor, pV=nRT or p = ρRT.

@@martinpattison8916 Good points. Whatever is the worst for an airplane to take off in, gain lift taking off from a runway, would generally be best for a long jumper. So many competing factors; the dense fog just stuck out visually to me in the video. Great jump!

If I were him, I think I would more so have them show me proof where I stepped over the start line when he seemingly cleared the 9 meter mark. In slow mo it looks like he might have, but I would insist on them doing a stop motion as fast as his feet were moving. This jump would verify him as the World Record holder at an even longer distance!
