Toyota Tundra hybrid 2024 review: American truck wars heat up with new Ram 1500 and Ford F-150 rival

If you thought the pick-up segment couldn't get any bigger in Australia, the Toyota Tundra is about to enter the picture, as it looks to go tyre to tyre with the Ram 1500, Ford F-150 and Chevrolet Silverado 1500 in the full-size class. Yep, this dual-cab is larger than the humble Toyota HiLux ute. Much larger.
But before you get too excited, the Tundra isn't officially available locally just yet. Toyota is conducting a pilot program, though, whereby 500 lucky customers get to drive pre-production vehicles as part of the model's right-hand-drive remanufacturing development process.
So, will the new converted Tundra be worth waiting for? In this expert review, CarsGuide Contributing Journalist Andrew Chesterton gets behind the wheel of a pre-production vehicle to find out, assessing not only its fit and finish but also its on- and off-road performance - plus so much more.

Disappointed to see that Australia will have the same issue as the Tundras in the USA: no front tow hooks. However, those who can afford the tundra in Australia and those who will use the Tundra for its purpose will be able to afford aftermarket winches and tow hooks, so for the rest of the folks, the Tundra will be fine even without tow hooks.

It's too small to qualify for the more relaxed (EPA) diesel regulations for vehicles with a GVWR/GVM over 8,500lbs. Diesels in small vehicles are difficult in the US.

Maximum tow ratings are always with nothing in the vehicle except a 150lb driver. This class of pickup, and anything smaller, isn't really considered to be a great tow vehicle in North America. We tend to go up to the class above Full-size Pickups called Large Pickup Trucks (GVM/GVWR over 8,500lbs). Toyota doesn't compete in this segment. The Tundra, F150, Ram 1500 and GMC/Chevy 1500 are all sprung for comfort rather than maximum payload.

I read that Australia are looking to more strict carbon emissions effective 2030. I wonder if that will deter its target market for these big petrol guzzlers. I don’t know what it is, but I would love one haha, regardless of how impractical this would be for my usage 😂

Not everyone wants a back breaking hilux which I have one n it aren't nice to be in everyday specially while towing my boat during my break period. I'm excited for this ute. Looking at the silverado at the moment and that is a nice ride. I might just pull the trigger on the silverado. Can't wait around for this to hit the show room.

It is an entry level full size and is sprung for comfort. If you want more payload you can opt for a larger pickup all the way up to the class topping F350 at up to 8,000 lbs/3,625 kg of payload.
