The Toyota Tundra embodies traditional truck qualities. Its Turbocharged 3.4L V6 & 10 speed automatic make a great pair for towing / hauling. However, after driving the more powerful hybrid, I've discovered it might make the least amount of sense. Something that's disappointing when the Tundra has such strong competition from the Ram 1500, Ford F-150 and Chevrolet Silverado.

    Bought a 2022 1794 midnight black TRD package long bed. Love it and get compliments every time I take it out ! But Mon thru Friday drive my 07 dbl cab long bed with 649,000 miles still love driving that truck !!! (5.7) Cheers !

    Try living in a mountain environment, the hybrid battery is active all the time. Nothing is cooler than seeing the engine shut off down a slope while the battery charges, that charge is used in driving on flat areas. Also my average gas milage in summer is 21mpgs. If I didn't drive above the speed limit, I'm sure my milage would be even better.

    I live very close to where these trucks are made in Texas and I am friends with one of the higher ups in engineering, and after talking to him more, I understand the hybrid max way more, it was not designed to give you better fuel economy as seen or turn into some sort of Prius Truck, but they mainly designed it for towing reasons, there's a huge difference when towing with the hybrid max and regular i-Force, at least I noticed it, the engine didn't have to rev as high, or downshift multiple gears to get the power needed. I will say for most people, the regular i-Force makes more sense, as it is cheaper, and more readily available. I will also add that like you said, this is a first-year product for them and as Toyota always does, it is much more conservative than what the powertrain is capable of. Ive heard a bunch of talk that the refresh of the Tundra, should bring even more changes to the HybridMax powertrain.

    I hope it brings more changes too, the regular powertrain is so good that it overshadows the MAX imo. It also shouldn’t affect the cruising rpm. if the hybrid has to help out while cruising, it will deplete the battery. From what ive seen and experienced, it helps out nicely for acceleration, coasting and extremely light loads but not much else!

    You are one of the better vehicle reviewers I've watched. Nice work and I appreciate your honesty. Your production style is good too. Keep it going! I wish the tow capacity was better with Tundra, that's my only holdback. Or get rid of my draft horses. But I need that horsepower. :)

    More torque means more go. That's all I know, that's all I care about. If you have the coin, buy the Hybrid. Zero regrets with my 2023 Hybrid despite not really needing it.

    I have a 22 Tundra that I purchased with 17K miles - I figured why buy new when I still have plenty of warranty and the truck was spotless- not a ding on it- I really enjoy this truck. It was an August build from the TEXAS manufacturer and I think Toyota had already worked out quite a few of the problems that the December or January models had (wind noise, doors rattling, turbo lag). As I just clicked 22K on the truck I also am hoping for the best. I don't abuse my truck and am a fanatic about maintenance and overall use of the truck- I do use the power when I need to... my family even received tutorials from me on how to use the side steps to get in/out of the vehicle (the seat plastic is much cheaper made than on my 2007). I did buy the truck with the driver side seat's plastic already cracked but under the warranty, Toyota replaced that months ago. I am not a heavy guy and I use the side step correctly so I should be good from here. That's how the plastic cracks overtime because people tend to just slide their ass from seat without using the side step. Best of luck to you.

    I love my HV. I wasn’t sold on it, mainly because of loss of storage. There is still some storage behind back seats that fold down. I needed the air bag suspension for towing. After owning the HV I’m happy i got it. It’s seamless and when i tow, it pulls better than the 3.0 diesel i traded in.

    @@brenteverett80 yes. Mine was a 22 LTD so it was right before they redid the interior, not a single safety or convenient feature other than a back up camera. The 22.5 and newer has the big screen and they added Blindspot and a bunch of other features. Mileage wise, the 3.0, kills this thing, but cost per mile is basically identical between the two. I log all of my fuel and I’m within .005 cents per mile difference in favor of the diesel. One more highway trip in the tundra will pass it. Diesel was 539. It hurt my rolling average.

    First time viewer here. Great review. I passed on the I-Force Max due to cost and similar mileage and picked up a discounted 2024 1794. I hope to tow a mid size travel trailer in the near future and hoping it's got enough HP/Torque to get the job done:)

    Bought a 23 Tundra limited IMax, my buddy who’s a Toyota technician told me “ Don’t buy the Hybrid, not worth the money, no great advantage”,, so I didn’t , the IMax twin turbo, non hybrid, had gobs of power.

    I have a '23 1794 Hybrid. The main reason I wanted a hybrid. My brother in law has a Ford F'150 and the engine shuts off when you stop. When the truck starts back from a stop there is a thump when it starts to go as the engine comes back to life. I HATE that. The Tundra hybrid starts out in electric mode smooth until 5 or 6 miles per hour and then the engine kicks in. No bump, just smooth as silk.

    You're spot on. Many have reported the hybrid didn't make much difference in terms of Mpg. Yep, save your moola.

    Toyota’s reputation for quality and reliability come from perfecting a vehicle design, parts, and assembly over time rather than pushing new models to market every few years. I typically buy and keep my car/truck for years so the ‘Toyota Tax’ works for me. Inevitability, new models have bugs and that may be the case with the Tundra for right now.

    BIG bugs. Turbo and wastegates require cab-off for repair, and now engines blowing and sitting at stealerships waiting for engine parts. I remember a Toyota engineer on KZread boasting how millions of miles of simulation had bulletproofed the new engine. Oops.

    I had both a '22 platinum and '22 TRD pro with my name on it back then. I ended up going for the TRD Pro...long story short, I traded it in 6 moths later for '23 F150 Raptor (and could not be happier). If i could go back I would have gone with the Platinum non-hybrid. The kicker for me was the hybrid regen braking system. At the 4 month ownership mark, in my truck the brakes started making a high pitched humming noise every time i stepped on the brake regardless of pedal pressure or speed. Brought it to the dealership and they told me that was normal...after 2 months of that sound I moved on and got my dream truck.

    I bought a platinum long bed hybrid a few months ago as a tax write off. I feel your review is fairly surface level, but I am hardly have the typical use case of my vehicle, so I'm largely going to be over critical of your review, which I was curious to watch. I live in the mountains, so I heat cycle the engine pretty drastically - the hybrid lets me go easier on the throttle (and is easier on the turbos) when the engine isn't fully warm yet. I get the extra power/torque from the hybrid motor going up all the steep hills, and I get regen braking on the way down. Driving in traffic/parking lots with the engine off is real nice, plus the benefits you noted. The battery is able to be swapped to more advanced types of battery technology whenever the aftermarket creates them; the existing coding of the vehicle would allow for some plug-and-play options that would lean to a greater utilization of assist/regen without remapping the hybrid system. The last point may seem like a stretch, but this is the same setup how 1st/2nd gen prius batteries can be upgraded for very cheap to provide increases in MPG over when the vehicle was new. And since the whole thing was a write-off, the extra cost of the vehicle doesn't really make it an extra burden on my wallet.

    This was just my look at the powertrains (full review is a different video). My truck in particular would drain its battery remarkably fast so the boost was doing most of the work, especially when cruising or going up hills on the highway. I didn’t drive it in the mountains so that is one specific usage that lends it more of an advantage to charge the battery but nonetheless, going down a mountain in any car that’s using engine braking will at least stop fuel consumption. For the TRD PRO and Capstone, I get it, but I wasn’t impressed for $4k as an option. As a write off or if the budget wasn’t much of a concern, sure, why not!

    You can tell when someone doesn’t understand this. It’s similar to electric vs gas tools, like trimmers etc. the electric for half the weight will function with more torque, avoiding the “hold the trigger til it spins up” time period. The electric is just on. Now. And this is what driving electric assist gives you. Drivability and instant torque instead of waiting for “spool up”.

    Love the V8s because they are easy to work on and last forever. Although I understand why, I'm still frustrated that they decided to move to the V6 twin turbo. Lots more things to go wrong with that setup, not to mention the complexity that comes with a hybrid vehicle. V8 = works, fairly simple, lasts forever V6/V6 hybrid = works, much more complex, longevity?????

    Good video- I bought the 2022 LIMITED TRD O.R. (N.H. - panoramic roof, JBL system) - believing the extra money for the battery was not worth the cost for insignificant increase in performance. Coming from a 2007 Tundra- I really like this truck and after 5 months of ownership I still look forward to driving it each and every time. However, I do not tow and if I did maybe I would have felt the need to spend the extra cash as some folks.

    Great points! I wonder about around town driving and/or traffic with a lot of stop and go situations. I'm curious if the hybrid makes a difference, and in particular, whether it smooths out the auto stop/start functionality better than the non-hybrid and/or has the ability to keep the A/C from shutting off at stops. Not that it would justify the cost for everyone, but perhaps for some use cases it would?

    Yeah, that’s my favorite part about the hybrid. You can be sitting waiting for your kids or whatever parked in the engine turns off and it’s just much chiller with the AC on and all the electronics.

    Having driven both powertrains, I agree with anything you said.... EXCEPT when you live in an area like I do. With lots of hills, 4 way stops on hills, many roads with limited visibility because you are pulling out on a curve and people are driving 15 mph over the speed limit. That extra low end torque and quickness from the hybrid deliver a massive difference in quality of life. Pulling a trailer through the area feels so much better. Still very doable with the non-hybrid engine. Definitely better with the hybrid though. And worth the price difference for my comfort.

    I have a 2023 Tundra limited first Toyota I’ve ever owned. I had a 2013 F150 ecoboast was a great truck I got 270000 kms out of it. I think the hybrid will help in the longevity of the turbos. I really love driving my tundra

    V8 is still better but if you had to choose get the non hybrid. Anyone keeping a hybrid truck long term will need to replace those expensive batteries sooner or later.

    Yes, but toyota’s batteries often make it 15 years (many variables here but the warranty is 10 years) so most 1st and 2nd owners won’t run into it!

    I have a Platinum 4WD with the iforce max and I am blown away by the amount of smoothness and power it has. Going up to Mammoth it doesn't even notice the hill climb. I had an F-150 before with the eco boost and it was powerful as well, but nothing like this. It definitely does not get good MPG. I've been averaging 16.8 with a mix of driving.

    The ones I'm interested to see are the Landcruiser/Tacoma 2.4 hybrids, that might be a powertrain that benefits from the extra torque a lot more than the bigger V6.

    I totally agree. Especially as it’s the same electric motor as the Tundra. So from both a power-to-weight and percentage increase over the 2.4, it has to make a bigger difference.

    Thanks for the video. Seems like you were driving the platinum, but the front grill was not a Platinum. No matter. Driving a 2003 Tundra SR5 that I bought new, with the 4.7 litre I think. I'm sure the new TT 3.4 litre non hybrid will be plenty for me. Thanks Again.

    I bought 23 f150 powerboost over new Tundra because of 7.2kw generator feature. I test drove both and liked both although I didn’t like how the new tundra looks. 7.2kw generator became more useful than I thought it would be when we go camping, fishing and I even use it on my driveway as now I don’t have to use our 100ft long power cord. I didn’t buy a hybrid truck for mpg but surprisingly my average mpg has been 21-24 so no complaints and the truck has been great first 11,000miles

    That's a big selling point to the ford, the Tundra is capped to 400w whether it's hybrid or not. Which won't do a whole lot and makes no sense when a Sienna can put out 1500!

    I like Ford, but the F-150 hybrid powerboost was consumer reports #1 LEAST reliable vehicle (of any car or truck). Hopefully you will not have the same experience.

    I personally bought a new 21 tundra for the v8 but I have to say with Ram and Toyota going to v 6. if I sell, I'm going ford or gm with their v8 sorry I don't care how much h p tt or if the hybrid is faster. I love n/a v8 engines. hopefully gm and ford keep there v8s around for a long time.

    Great info, I’ll pass on the Hybrid version it just adds more complexity and more $$$, the Juice isn’t worth the squeeze in my opinion!

    I extensively test drove the hybrid and non-hybrid before I bought the hybrid. I don't like losing the under seat space but maintaining highway speeds and acceleration. There's no comparison for me the hybrid all the way. My neighbor has essentially the same truck. Same color except non-hybrid and they wish they would have got a hybrid. Only time will tell if the electric motor and battery hold up but they do have a 10-year 150,000 mi warranty. Time will tell.

    Torque=work (force applied), HP=power (work done over a period of time). HP is a function of torque....the equation is HP=(Torque x RPM)/5252. That's why big diesels make gobs of torque, but relatively low HP numbers.....they spin slower than a comparable gas engine.

    CAFE standards. 19to 21combined is a 10% increase in fuel economy which is actually significant when looking at CAFE restrictions. And the rules heavily favor electrification over straight gas

    Don't expect my comment to be in your radar but I'll give it anyway. I have a construction business. Ive made significant coin in 2023. My accountant called me and said you have to buy some capital equipment to avoid a significant amount of tax. The tundra I force max met the weight requirements of over 6k pounds for the write off. Honestly I love the truck. total kick ass off the line compared to other brands. My friends have rams and f150's gmc and Denali. Sorry folds talk the numbers. at 9200 feet about sea level in Colorado. My I force max is the balls.

    It does not matter what brand, do not buy a new vehicle right now. The interest rates are insane, and the second you sign the papers, you are at least $20k upside down. The msrp’s are way out of whack. Keep your powder dry for the foreseeable future.

    If the hybird would have give better gas milage . I would have gon4 with it.... but the power is good for what the truck can pull and do

    Have the V6 Turbo and it has already too much torque and HP. I like the Hybrid but clearly not necessary. Especially since I do not tow since that is the REAL reason to get the Hybrid. The boosted towing specs.

    I didn’t drive the regular truck for a week so it wasn’t exactly fair for me to report the mileage but i got about 18mpg in the regular truck and 17 in the hybrid (I was driving more aggressive in the hybrid because it was a press vehicle). The difference seems to usually be about 2 mpg which is what the epa says it should be.

    I have a non hybrid and average 15-17 mix. 4 weeks ownership. I’ve read on fb pages that the hybrids are in fact getting better mpg. Despite them not being built for that.

    Still,ithink they juju beaned the hybrid. I went with the Ford Powerboost and got more power and efficiency whenever I need either of the., I'll get 24- 26 city,24-27 hwy at any given time. Plus the built in generator is a game changer. I really thought Toyota would nail it. Plus the under seat storage deleted is a deal braker.

    I had the previous design Tundra. I was looking to purchase a new Tundra but was waiting for the redesigned one to hit the market. As soon as I saw it. I thought, " they took 13 or so years to come up with this ugly thing?" I then purchased a 2023 RAM with a 5.7 HEMI E-torque. 20+ mpg in 16,000 miles of mixed driving. Easily, the best, most comfortable truck I've ever had in my 60 years of driving.

    The Hybrid is for POWER, OFF THE LINE SPEED, NOT EFFICIENCY LIKE YOUR PORTRAY IT. Thank you. If you’re on a budget, or just envy people that chose to buy the iFroceMax then good on you. If you prefer the TRD Pro and the ride it gives you then so be it, everybody is not the same, get what one YOU want and YOU prefer. Other people’s opinions are no more valid than the next person. That’s why Toyota gave us CHOICES and VARIETY.

    Ah yes, 2 tenths of a second better, POWER. It’s a great powertrain, but $3800 is a lot of money for an insubstantial mpg and performance improvement on an already great powertrain. I think it makes sense in the TRD Pro and Capstone because those trucks are about taking it to the max. The hybrid does give it a little sharper response. Elsewhere, my advice is to save the money but you’re right, all an opinion. This one is mine and this video shows how I came to my conclusion.

    @@Realistick I appreciate your opinion, I personally drove both engines and was blown away by the TRD Pro and how much better of a ride it provided as well with the better components so I went that route. But I totally understand for the budget people you’re still getting a reliable and nice tundra with going on the lower trim models.

    I just love cruising at 30 mph making it home with just the electric battery. Now, i dont care how long the traffic light takes to change or waiting in line wasting gas, it is a gas saver for me. What I dont like ia the remote start, but then again is a safety feature and where I live, they steal trucks daily.

    The max only helps with acceleration, it can’t really do anything while cruising with a load, you can check out tfl truck’s video for more info but it doesn’t help much for towing unfortunately! Have to buy a diesel for that.

    Toyota Engineers sure don't seen to understand the whole point behind a Hybrid. Just for the Record, the point is for BETTER GAS MILEAGE ! Not to add Torque and power. It's nuts vehicles that are very similar in size, to compare, like the Tacoma Iforce Max, and the Grand Highlander Hybrid have a huge gap in MPGs between them, because Toyota chose to use the Economy of the Hybrid in the Highlander, and the Power in the Tacoma. So Toyota, when you figure out how to get 37 MPG in the Tacoma Hybrid, like the Highlander, I'll buy one , until then it's overpowered , and sucks gas not much better than the outgoing 6 cyl.

    Towing isn’t horsepower based, it’s chassis and frame based- Hence the reason the 700hp Raptor R is rated for less towing capacity than the standard F150. This reviewer’s conclusion is terribly incorrect

    I see your logic but you misinterpreted what I said and jumped to a conclusion. Chassis, cooling, suspension and axles are bigger determining factors in towing than gearing and power (I've done a deep dive video on this before with Rams). Power output (especially at a low rpm) helps the truck feel/accelerate better when pulling heavy loads, which is what I was referring to in the video.

    I wouldn't buy any vehicle till the 3rd or 4th year of a new model. A whole new engine platform is screaming for recalls and issues till they work the kinks out.

    Hi Tyler, I hope you are doing great, unfortunately I didn't have time to watch your videos lately, but again I am happy to see your channel grow. I almost don't watch car videos now, the last channels I watched were Larry Chen, Doug demuro and Harry's garage (those I remembered rn). The journalisttic approach is nice, but Auto Express type is different and Chris Harris type of enthusiastic reviews are different, Doug Kinda blends them well, that's why I'd say he's the most successful one. But I enjoy watching Harry the most, keeping it simple is often the most sophisticated way, looking forward for a SL55 AMG R230, Porsche 986 review or something like that because they are still quite unique, it's also risky in terms of views, maybe new GT3 review would be more solid, but these are just my thoughts. I wish you all the best 💖

    Seems like Toyota didn't ask the right people for wants when designing this thing, or just poor planning. No tow hooks, why? These things feel really flimsy; the doors and tailgate feel like they're made by IKEA, and the panel alignment is off. The rear bumper, or lack thereof looks bad. Where is the V8? Fuel tank is ridiculously small. No thanks Toyota, you failed.

    I've had lengthy conversations with the Car care nut and also watch his content. He never said these were lemons. He said it's complicated and you should probably avoid the first model years (and he recommends this for virtually every truck and car after a redesign).

    Not only will you be replacing a $6900 battery but a pair of turbos that are around the same price. There is no advantage to buying this truck it’s still better to get a naturally aspirated V8.

    You couldn't be more wrong. Toyota hybrids are the most reliable you can buy that easily get 150-200k miles. And there is no advantage to a NA V8. TTV6 engines have far better torque, towing, hp and mileage. And if you look at actual reliability comparisons, ford's 3.5 ecoboost is more reliable than their 5.0 v8.

    @@user-mh5qg5jb7d Walk your dumbass over to a Toyota repair center and ask them what they repair most. They're going to tell you early 2010s hyrbrids. That's the vast majority of what they are repairing. How do I know? I just had my Tundra in for routine maintenance and asked that exact question. They told me avoid hybrids like the plague. They will break down and cost way more money to fix than their gas counterparts. You want that long term cost go ahead. I'm never going to waste my money on that bullshit.

    Most people don't let the turbos cool down before shutting it off. Their turbos are at risk to only go 100K. Very expensive repair. If you engage the turbos hard, idle the engine for a minute to cool it down before shutting it down.

    @@robcooke1956Agreed. I make my original comment because I owned a F-150 Ecoboost and had no idea what I was getting myself into. First, I didn't know I had to do a TDI service every 30K that cost me $325 to keep the carbon build up in the engine from happening, I didn't know that turbos over heat when towing for long periods of time, I didn't know that head gaskets blow on these all the time which mine went at 118,000, and I didn't know that the average life of a turbo is only around 150K which both of mine went out at 152K. I spent over $15,000 to keep that truck on the road only to 153,000 miles, an extra $1,000 every 10,000 miles, and now I am the biggest advocate against turbos. I sold the truck in 2021 and bought the last 2nd gen Tundra and wow I wish I had bought this truck in 2017 instead.

    Hybrid is not dumb. I will say though that Ford’s hybrid powertrain in the F150 Powerboost makes much more sense in the real world than Toyota’s I-Force Max hybrid. The Powerboost has tons of torque but is also designed and achieves better fuel economy than Toyota’s I-Force Max. The ProPowerOnBoard generator system in the Ford may seem like a gadget to someone who doesn’t use their truck for work or RV camping, but I can tell you from personal experience of owing an XLT Powerboost and a Lariat PB, they are game changers. I’ve taken the I-Force Max for a test drive and the list of shortcomings are substantial. The Powerboost is a better truck.

GMC, Chevs and Fords plus Heavy equipment for our quarry and open pit mine. We use our half tons for our mechanical engineering consulting firm. Our trucks are not mall crawlers, they’re pounded on daily by 250 lb lugs who don’t give a crap about making them last. If our trucks were causing downtime and causing us to lose money, they would be gone in a heartbeat. I’m sorry to disappoint you but I operate in the real world of business, not fanboy antics like it’s a football game with my team against your team.
