After owning my 2022 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-Road in Lunar Rock for 1 year and 15K miles I felt that it was the best time to do a review! In the review I go over my pros and cons for my 3rd gen Tacoma. I feel that an owner review is definitely important for the 3rd gen 2022 Toyota Tacoma! I do recommend watching this video before buying a Toyota Tacoma to ensure that you know as much as possible. With 15,000 miles on my 3rd gen 2022 Tacoma, doing a review now seemed appropriate. I also go over some of the mods on my 2022 Tacoma TRD Off Road. With the 4th gen Tacoma coming out soon, I still felt it was necessary to review my 3rd gen Tacoma so future Tacoma owners can still know how the 3rd gen Tacoma is! Lunar Rock is always a recommended Tacoma color!

I agree the transmission is weird but you don't buy a truck for MPGs you buy it to haul tow and off-road

I agree, but the fact that toyota ditched the 4.0 and 5 speed auto for this 3.5 and 6 speed auto, doesn't seem like it made a big difference in fuel economy in my opinion. I would have rather seen the updated 4.0 used in the 4runner and 6 speed speed auto or something more than 5 and I bet the driveability would have been much better.

How quaintly American that sounds. The reality is that diesel pick ups get 24mpg in 2023.

I have a ‘23 Tacoma TRD off road premium. No “gear hunting” issues, has enough power. If I need race power, I’ll use my ‘17 Mustang GT/CS.

Newsflash: a truck that is virtually unchanged since 2005 isn't good on gas. Nobody buys a Tacoma and for good gas mileage. You buy it because it's safe, capable off-road and reliable, gas mileage was just a suggestion. I owned my 2020 Off road premium+ for 2 years and I averaged 24mpg. The only time I saw below 20 was towing a trailer. Is the powertrain quirky sure but never bad enough I needed a tune. The transmission fix happened in late 2019 all 2020-2024 models should have left the factory with that updated ECU. I didn't buy the Tacoma to be fast it got dusted by a V6 Camry in my second month of ownership. I bought mine because my V8 tundra was getting 11mpg and all the money I was saving not having a new truck went into the gas pump. The Taco did everything I asked if for for 2 years I just needed a larger towing capacity so I bought a 2022 tundra. Motor 1 really spun this video out of hand in the article they wrote.

I get 20.6 MPG with my 2022 SR5 RWD DCSB between hauling an enclosed 6x12 trailer and a lot of Highway driving without it. I usually get between 23-24 mpg when I don’t haul at all with mostly highway miles. On road trips, I get between 26-28 mpg on the highway.

Really, you're saying you get better mpg than toyota says it can get? So toyota is wrong? Lol

I usually drive with my extra power button on because the transmission is seems like it changes back and forth between gears too often but I have a spintech muffler on it so it sounds really cool

My room lighting sucks so I have 3 external LEDs on full power pointed at my face 😂 also so I can look at my monitor to make sure I’m in focus and the audio is still recording and you don’t see my eyes darting around like a mad man

First thing I love my 21 tacoma sport long bed. I agree that the automatic transmission is weird. On the fuel mpg I can get on average 23-25 mpg on the freeway to work because I drive like a grandpa. One time trip to work I did 28mpg . Everything is stock wheels, suspension, and no tuning. Just wanted to share the information.

I sold mine and 40k. Transmission would gear hunt on the highway if a slight breeze touched it. It was my 5th truck, just the worse transmission engine combination. It felt Toyota took some parts that they had available and stuck them together to make the 3rd gen Tacoma. Too bad, the rest of the truck for me, near perfect.

3 bright LEDs to the face because indoor lighting sucks. And I’m constantly staring off camera at either my notes or the monitor to monitor audio and picture lol.

I have to disagree with the whole tuning issue. If Toyota engineers had a way of getting more power, better fuel economy and the best longevity out of the engine, they would. When you increase the power through a tune, you have to give something up. You’re giving up the longevity of the motor. There’s a give and a take when it comes to tuning an engine, you can’t have the best of both worlds, it’s that simple. The engine in stock form isn’t the most powerful engine but in fine with that as long as it last a long time.
