I drive a 2011 hilux with over 500 000 km . Beside regular maintenance i had no major problems with it (not a single engine problem ). I think this is the best car in its segment :).

well i don't know for sure but I think the car was assembled in South Africa. I did not replace the clutch even though the car is quite heavy ( the car works as a veterinary ambulance , which means at least 250 kilograms of equipment )

Most honest review I've seen so far and I do agree, it`s not a great family car, I feel a bit odd for buying one(got the 2007) and using it for family stuff(market/short trips, baby in the back on a jumpy seat) but when I go into the woods I feel safer than ever knowing It will take me anywhere I want which makes it all worth the trouble, not to mention i can never fill out the back with what I carry:)

@@SuperSokol7 im afraid so, yes. dont take my word for it though, i encourage you to travel to the end of nowhere in australia and see it for yourself. you wont find vw touareg, land rover discovery .. (widely viewed as the worlds best 4wd in alot of circles), and other bread n butter 4wd's that are not built to withstand the harshness of the outback. for peace of mind the only cars that i would rely on when im 1000km from civilization in rock crawling type terrain would be toyota land cruiser, nissan patrol, mitsubishi pajero, thats it. even the hilux id go 'yeah it will do it' but the land cruiser i think has the extra capability that i require if needed. which is where i flag the raptor as not fit for purpose, for my needs. it may be just fine doing some soft roading, carting trail bikes, camping etc, but a serious 'your life depends on it' machine, in my view there are only 3 choices, maybe 4 if the disco is included though its not my cup of tea, its a good 4wd. give the raptor 20 years of abuse in the desert, and if its still going i'll change my view, though for right now i'd suggest its an infant in the serious 4wd world.

Excellent review Autogefühl. I am a proud of owner of a Hilux of the similar series, and this truck has never dissapoints. the 2.4 turbodiesel gives you good pull on lower speed, and it cruises well on Malaysian freeways. Fuel consumption is ok, though not as superb as the Isuzu DMax. Interior and spec wise, it just cannot compete with Ford Ranger or the VW Amarok but all Hilux owners know - were not into this truck because its beautiful, or to geek out on its specs. We want a truck that does the job. Who cares about the ok-ish look, slightly primitive tech? its RELIABILITY and ENDURANCE that counts with these things.

And driving the truck onroad to the city while it is so muddy dirty is a head turner to many as it really looks so functionally, properly used! And in fact is! 20 bags of fertilizer, or animal feeds, or grains, is easy peasy (& that's about a ton) on the bucky, plus a couple of co-workers inside the cab! From time to time, we also use it for long-distance travels. And to manage the bumpiness of the ride, we just load the back with some weight (at least 250 kg) plus driver & 3 passengers inside the cab. I have a 2016 Hilux Revo single cab that I purchased for my farm in the mountains and it replaced a 2006 Land Rover 130 TD5. I only use it for buying food for my animals. While the comfort and “drivability” is a huge step up from the LR TD5, the road handling is really bad: I think it would be better with full time 4x4 and a lockable central differential.

Sir, don't expect it to be comfortable as a daily driver. If mostly highways, maybe. But if you have uneven roads, it won't be that comfortable. As for a workhorse, it can do the job, i have the 2014 hilux, sometimes i put in 20 bags of 40kg cement or some heavy stuff. Funny thing is when you have a heavy load at the bed of a truck or pick up, its suspension becomes soft. :-)

The Tacoma appears bigger than the Hilux. My 2008 Hilux 3ltr d4d 4x4 next service is 500,000km. It's been a pleasure owning this double cab. I got rid of my previous Hilux coz Toyota failed to resolved the humming gearbox (manual), it would seem my current Hilux was well put together. I honestly can't stand the look of the new Hilux, so much so, I'm looking elsewhere but common sense keeps reminding me to buy another Toyota... I can never own a petrol truck, petrol trucks are very thirsty. Americans love their big petrol engines. For the rest of the world, diesel engines reign supreme, thank God.

But same time if I went with single cab I cannot carry passengers at all aside from one. I noticed what looks like an in between with a small back door and smaller back seats. I can’t be sure but it looks to me as if this model is an in between single & crew cab leavening more cargo space and room in back for occasional passengers. Do I have this right?

The Hilux is very popular in Southeast Asia, but the quality and power is not good enough for the American taste. It looks good and the right size to fit in American garage.

I wish that Toyota will someday build one midsize Pick-Up Truck for the different markets an named them different or even same... I do like the actual styling of the Hilux much more than before.. But the Toyota Tacoma of USA looks even better. So my hope is, that they will build one truck and called it different. Tacoma for USA and Hilux for the rest of the world. But the engine options should be the same all over the world. And I hope, we will see some patrol engines in Pick-Up trucks even here in Europe.. But for this moment, I think that the actual Hilux looks better than ever.. Now that should give him some more of the tech of the Tacoma and a more styled interior and it would be a better VW Amarok and Co Fighter..

Would the Hi-Lux be compatible with the US Toyota Tacoma? Or the much larger Toyota Tundra which is more the size of FORD F-150 or Chevy Silverado in the USA. ?

This 2.4 engine actually feels more responsive that the old 3.0 engine. Anyone who has driven the 2.4 and 2.8? Is there a noticeable difference in power and torque?

as much as i love this truck, i cant but point out severral mistakes like the power button does nt do nothing special but only raises the engine in its sweet spot were the most touque and power is, eco is exactly the opposite which puts the engine in lower revs. and by the way this example is a diesel not petrol @32.20.

Excellent review . I own a 2017 hilux double cab 2.4 diesel manual . Drove both manual and auto before deciding. auto was terrible tbh manual very light and easy to use so opted for that . Engine refined but lacking power tbh needing the 2.8 diesel in uk !

I know manufacturers like to give journalists the top trim editions. But is an option for you to get what Brian named as the better and more logical choice, a more of an entry level edition? Not to repeat what Brian said, but it's a utilitarian vehicle, and in the top trim a lot of details are still not what you'd expect.
