Toyota bZ4X VS Volkswagen I.D.4 comparison

#ToyotabZ4X
#VWI.D.4
#CoupleCarComparison
This is a Motormouth couple car comparison of the Toyota bZ4X and Volkswagen I.D.4 electric crossover vehicles. Toyota bZ4X or Volkswagen ID.4, which EV would you choose? The bZ4X is about 4” longer than the ID.4 and the Toyota offers a little more front row legroom. The ID.4 has more second row space and cargo capacity behind the second row at 30.3 cubic feet compared to the bZ4X with 27.7 cubic feet. The bZ4X has FWD and AWD models. FWD has a 71.4 kWh battery with 201 horsepower and 406 km/252 miles of range. AWD models have a 72.8 kWh battery with 214 horsepower and 367 km/228 miles of range. The ID.4 has RWD and AWD models to choose from. RWD has an 82 kWh battery, 201 horsepower and 422 km/280 miles of range. AWD has 302 horsepower and 394 km/251 miles of EV range. The ID.4 does not offer ventilated front seats or heated rear seats, which the bZ4X has. However, the Toyota doesn’t have a power passenger seat, driver seat memory, a rear wiper or a glove box, which the VW has. You decide which features are more important. Both have similar available features like a fixed panoramic sunroof, a power driver seat and a larger touchscreen. The ID.4 comes with more standard features in Canada like a heated steering wheel, heated front seats and a wireless charger, you have to go up a trim on the bZ4X to get some of these features. Both come with cloth seats with available leatherette and wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto. In Canada, the bZ4X will roll out in British Columbia and Quebec, the ID.4 is available in both provinces plus Ontario. At this time, the 2022 ID.4 is sold out in Canada and according to the VW Canadian website, 2023 pre-orders have not begun yet. The bZ4X has an open and spacious cabin with plenty of legroom in the front and rear similar to a large sedan. There is a mix of materials in the cabin including textured fabric added to the dashboard and piano black. Only the top trim comes with SofTex upholstery with the option of a black or light grey interior, all other trims have a black interior with cloth or a mix of cloth and leatherette. The radiant heating system for your legs is a nice touch but because of the location of it, Toyota had to remove the glove box. You will find plenty of storage in the vehicle for your insurance papers. The bZ4X comes standard with a 7” multi-information display, an 8” touchscreen, all other trims get at 12.3” touchscreen. In the US, the 12.3” screen is standard. Other standard features include, wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto, manual cloth seats for the driver and passenger plus a hands-free tailgate. One up from the base model in Canada has heated front seats and a heated steering wheel. Other available features include, ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, a power driver’s seat, a 9-speaker JBL audio system, a fixed panoramic sunroof and hands-free power tailgate with kick sensor. The bZ4X does not come with driver seat memory or a power passenger seat on any trim but there is a manual height adjustment on the passenger side.
The ID.4 offers an open cabin with plenty of space and storage. It has generous sized door pockets and a well-designed centre console with removable cupholders and partitions. The interior is modern with a combination of leatherette or cloth upholstery, some hard plastic and high gloss black trim. The interior looks and feels like the same quality of materials you see in other Volkswagen products. Volkswagen is moving towards screens with no physical volume or heat controls, it’s all touch based which some will enjoy and others might find frustrating, but it does give it an overall sleek, clean and futuristic look. We found the infotainment system to be intuitive to use and responsive in our test model. The ID.4 offers a lot of value, it comes standard with a 10” touchscreen, a 5.3” digital gauge cluster, wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto, a wireless charger, heated front seats and a heated steering wheel. Other available features include, a larger 12” touchscreen, power front seats with memory, massage seats, a fixed panoramic sunroof and a power tailgate. In the US, the middle trim gets these extra features. There are no ventilated front seats or heated rear seats offered on any trim.

I think the Subaru… I mean the Toyota bZ4e will be a sales success. That badge has a huge and loyal customer base. Besides Volkswagen sales are always a hit or miss in Americaland. I had to buy one, if I were forced to buy an EV… it would absolutely be the more conventional and Germanic ‘People’s Car’. Thanks for the video and your impressions.

Most important feature incorrectly mentioned here is the USA Fed tax rebate. Toyota's $7500 EV rebates ends on Sept 30, 2022, will be halved $3750 until Mar 31, 2023, then halved again $1875 till it ends on Sept 2023. At the rate of production, very few people will qualify if Toyota can even release cars before end of Sept.

Combine the features from these two vehicles and you’d have a compelling EV SUV worth considering. Passenger power seats, range, faster onboard charging, styling and price from VW. Then heated and ventilated front seats, rear heated seats, infrared heat along with the heat pump, infotainment controls and reliability from Toyota. The black cladding is so hideous on the BZ4X while the side styling cues are so nice and clean on the ID.4.

Once again, another top notch comparison review. I love the Toyota but I'll wait for prices to come down on the used market. Thanks for explaining why there's no glove box too. Also interesting about the Canada vs USA pricing! Base model in the US is more expensive (when you convert to Canadian dollars). Canada probably gets a stripped down model (L vs XLE as base). As hosts, you're super pleasing to listen to; so many other KZread reviewers are so hyped up & excited during the review. Whereas you're both calm & pleasant. Good first effort by both of these manufacturers. The Toyota has a lot going for it, like brand reliability, but I dislike the black cladding, and not having a memory driver's seat is a deal-breaker for me. So I would probably go with the I.D.4, even with its quirky controls.

That was the old 2017 Kia with an air cooled battery (which was not actively cooled), and we have no idea how the orginal owner treated that battery, coudl have chared it to 100% everyday and lots of fast DC charging. I have also a 2019 but 30KWH the older models had 27KWH and different chemistry and has 54,000KM and less than 5% loss which is considered normal. I have always maintained my battery only charging to 80% and not lower than 10%and once every there months or so I do a charge to 100% the drive to 10% and back to 80% to re-calibrate my BMS (I am a electronics technician and I know my DC stuff). My 2020 has the same battery (SKI) as current E-Niro (64KWH) and the 2020 has active liquid cooled battery system, with heat scavenging and active heating and cooling like the EV6 and Ionic 5,

Good review, but you should check on the type of clearance figures given by the manufacturers before you state one is better than another. As pointed out by an earlier comment, they are in reality very close. Secondly, acceleration stats are useful, but how does the car handle emergency lane changes, curves, bumps and pavement joint strips? How quiet is the car in regard to tire, road and wind noise? How long are the seat cushions in the front seats, especially important for taller drivers? Thanks.

I not necessarily like it, but that is how it is written in the language. From what I know ( this could be false rumour also), zedd was the norm. Until some poet or song writer used "zee" for some children rhyme. But for language it is better to follow the rules uniformly . FYI. Level 2 charge rates are so slow that having 6.6kW vs 9.6kW or any other Level 2 charge rate is totally irrelevant with regard to battery life. Only differences in the DC fast charge rates are relevant.

Exactly! And the rate for a charger is KWatts or Watts. The rate for Batteries is KW/h.

@@ClaudioBarroso Not sure what you mean by the "rate for Batteries". Battery ENERGY stored is rated in Wh or kWh. kW/h (kilowatts per hour) is power per hour which doesn't really make sense. But the point is taken that way too many people in the EV space WHO SHOULD KNOW BETTER are citing the incorrect units for power and energy and creating unnecessary confusion. For example, saying an EV has an 80 kW battery is like saying a gas/petrol car has a 107 hp gas tank.

Depending on your height, the bZ4X display can be blocked because it doesn't move with the steering wheel. The id4 display moves with it. Something to consider depending on your height and wheel position preference.

Seems like the Toyota is not really made for long trips. The VW is better, but significantly less than the EV6/Ioniq 5. I also don't like Toyota's gauge cluster. Sure, VW's does not look great, but not as offensive. Much prefer to save money & weight and not get a power seat. Heated and vent seats seem like a much more important feature to have, though cloth seats could be sufficient in mild climates.

I’d like to bring an element of the real world into this discussion. People might be inclined to think they can walk into a Toyota dealership and buy a RAV 4 prime and expect to be driving it in short order. Fact is, 3-4 years of wait with a $2500.00 deposit up front. Today, another Canadian brought that expectation to 5 years wait. How will delivery compare with the BZ4X? I’m thinking we might realistically expect warp drive in vehicles by then.

I think electric cars are great for the urban environment with daily driving distances of only a couple hundred km per day. Lots of charging stations available and easily charged at home. However for any long distance travelling EV's are not practical. Hydrogen fuel powered vehicles are the future for any small or large vehicles for long distance travel. You can easily top up in 5 minutes vs 30-40 minutes with a EV. In fact Ontario has just announce a new Hydrogen fuel production plant to be built in the Niagara region which could be running by 2024. Several more are planned in the province.

I don't get Toyota. No one pedal driving and slow charging. I understand that faster charging is harder on the battery, but most of he time we're doing L2 charging at home. When I'm traveling, I want to be charged and on my way in under a half hour. The bZ is basically an entry-level town car.

Interesting how in North America the Toyota ’T’ is a more valuable brand in terms of build quality, durability when compared to VW. Here in Europe it’s the other way around. Toyota’s are respected of course but the ‘German build quality’ thing still counts for something, although the stats don’t back that up.

C'mon, go measure it yourself. Id4 AWD has more than 8" ground clearance. Stop using the conflicting VW media info. VW media's ground clearance is the fully loaded to capacity minimum clearance. And Toyota uses the maximum clearance with zero load.
