I think there are many people who would love to do what you’ve done, or at least think that’s what they want. I met a guy in Edinburgh last month, down from Harris. I asked him what it’s like there and he said on a sunny day, it’s incredible. On a bad day, it can be fierce. He also said how people visit in the summer for a week, then move there, and leave after one winter. So I think it would be good to see the reality of it all, good and bad. I’m fed up of the social media where everyone is living an amazing life, or that’s what they lead everyone to believe. I get that no one wants to see unhappiness, but that’s a part of most people lives, like it or not. It would also be good to know about the ups and downs of running a YT channel, how long it takes to make and edit a video etc. Tiree looks amazing, let’s see the reality of living there. 👍

Hi. The reality is as we film it. It's truly stunning. Warmer winters, more realistic summers. It became apparent over the last 3ish years that for us remote living really is amazing - even when the wind is blowing doors off cars. One thing you learn is that if it's windy park your car facing the wind or your door will become your engine bonnet (engine hood if you're reading from across the pond). I think remote living - regardless of where it may be - is not for everyone. But if you are looking for a simpler, slower life it's amazing. It's all about FREEDOM. If you want supermarkets, taxis, nightclubs etc it's not going be the right thing. We've loved remote working and building a little woolly hat business as well as the photography opportunities that would never have materialised on the mainland. I don't think we've ever worked harder but the upside is we love every second of working. That can't be bad. Our view is: There is always a solution, sometimes it's just a little harder to find. To give some real world context cars don't require MOTs on Tiree - That's set in law. I think it's about thinking differently and removing those ideas that guide life in more urban locations.

@@SimpleLifeScotland I lived on Vancouver island from 2006 until 2020, and explored the smaller gulf islands around it. There is definitely somethings that attract me to that sort of life, as you say, simpler. I'm at a point where a decision on what I do next is imminent. It hasn't been easy getting to this point and I agree about going with your gut, it's always right. It's also scary.

I haven't been to Tiree for far too many years! We took our three children there one summer having already explored the chain of the Outer Hebrides from Barra to Lewis in previous holidays. One visit was definitely enough for like you we fell in love with Tiree and returned each summer for the next five years. We never wanted to go anywhere else. However, the children grew up and schooling, exams, university and life etc got in the way and we didn't return but always in our hearts we planned to go back. Your vlogs have been fabulous and reminded me why we loved Tiree and why we WILL be back- all of us. Thank you.

I’d love to hear about all the seasons, the beauty of the whole island, and especially how you relate to the Gaelic community, the music, the culture, the stories of the people who’ve lived on the island for a thousand years. It’s wonderful that new people and energies are moving to the Hebrides, and how you integrate with the existing community is so important for the life of the islands to strengthen and grow. I’m wishing you every success in your Tiree life!

Wonderful scenery! Thanks for sharing the views. What I'd like to know is how you chose Tiree, how you shop for what you need. Where is the largest town for shopping and how long does it take to get there. How is living in Scotland different than living in England. We live in Texas so our days are fashioned by the heat. How are your days fashioned by the cold and how do your lives change from winter to summer. That's a good start to my questions, don''t you think?

I think you are already doing a great job! I love how it's filmed and the shots of the beach and the ocean and everything else. I think what I always find very interesting when people live in remote or very different from my place of life, are the sort of functions of everyday life so I can try to imagine what life "there" could be like. Things like how far to the shops, what kind of food you make, are things more expensive when living on an Island and can you get all the same things as you could before. What are still the same and what feels completely different?

I think Milly's idea is great. For years the beauty of the Hebrides enticed but I had given up the idea of owning a car when I moved out of the US in 1988 and I didn't want to need one ever again and I think that suggested that living on a remote island, no matter how beautiful, would be difficult. So is it difficult? I've been on Barra when the ferry comes in and then within a very few hours all of the grocery shop shelves were empty again. Is this similar for you? What sorts of things do you try to plan so that you are not left doing without?

We did a similar thing to you. In 2014 we had the opportunity to rent a remote off grid house, no electricity or cmeans of communication, on a very small island on the west coast of Scotland. We were there for three winters and four summers and then bought an equally remote house on the Ardnamurchan peninsular. It's the best thing we ever did, a different style of life. At present I am thinking of starting a KZread channel to share our way of living and our perspective as we are both modern day Druids and this permeates how we see and do things. I was really interested in the difficulties of producing worthwhile content and the challenges it poses. I would be very interested in the process that you are developing.

Above all the most important thing for us is that it's HOME. Tiree is like anywhere, it's up to you to make it home. I'm sure you'd love it. There are many different communities on the island some, will be those that you become part of and others won't just like anywhere. And i'm sure over time those will change for you as they do for most. We've made the most amazing friends living on the island so the definitions of local it's not worth thinking about. The people we call friends are like us, they love living on Tiree and thats all that matters. Never been a fan of labels. With regard to finding somewhere to live, if you are looking to buy there are a number of properties on the market at the moment. Moving to the island can be as simple as putting everything in the back of a van and driving:-) You've given me a great idea for a video :-).

You have an engaging on-screen presence, and your camera skills are excellent. Tyree looks SO incredibly beautiful, and you know how to capture the poetry of the landscape. I admire anyone who attempts to create and develop a KZread channel. I'm certain it takes a great deal of work, there is a steep learning curve, and one has to simply develop a style as you go along. It would be interesting to see the process of gathering wool, spinning, and making the lovely warm wool hats and how you got that idea; your background in photography; the small details - how do you get your mail? Is there a community center? Was it easy to make friends and how did you do it? What do you do with your leisure? What is your internet situation? I live on an island 15 miles off the coast of Maine, a "Blink" choice of 2 1/2 years ago, and I love island life. It's village life, really. I think you have made an excellent beginning IRT KZread. If it brings you pleasure, I certainly hope you continue. Cheers from across the Pond.

I'm learning constantly about KZread and you are right its a steep mountain of a learning curve. Thanks for the great questions about island life here. I'll use your suggestions to build a video :-) I look forward to chatting with you again :-) Cheers from this Tiny Scottish Island :-)

Recently disenchanted with some KZread vlogs, I have wondered what bits of making a KZread vlogging group are similar to creating, say, a movie and which bits might have some similarities with writing a novel or a play. I don't expect you to have immediate expertise but I do hope you keep notes to some day write your own guide to how to create and maintain a KZread vlogging group because I suspect there may be a few who will be needing what you are learning. As a retired computer programmer whose career happened parallel to the growth of the Interent, I can see so much that is presented without explaining context for that presentation so thank you for taking the time to try to explain background. I have not been to Tiree although I have been on many of the islands (Vatersay is my favourite), so I love your home area photos!

This is best one so far. We have a project on its way! : building your house. So something to look forward to. The sound, music, photography and cinematography of your vids are top quality. And you are engaging and have the likability factor. So thats a great start! To distinguish the films from being mere excellent visual feasts, as a tourism films, it Would be great to know more about you and your partner's backgrounds, and your personalities. I relate more to the people on the channels I watch if I know more about them. I think its about relatability and that you are investing yourselves in the channel as much as it is about your talent as a filmaker. I have subscribed, so am a fan and look forward to seeing how you go, as they say in Scotland. Hope that helps.

Hello, I just found your channel and wonder why there was a gap of videos, makes sense, the book sounds good. you are right, we do forget to listen to that part of us. there is so much noise in ours lives that its tricky to hear it. we are pulled so many ways sometimes. lovely sheep. the house build sounds very interesting, would be good to see, yes i think other comments have said about daily life and how do you manage? my only one gripe is some of the music is a bit intense, base. that's just me, sorry but i guess i can turn it down, . thank you again for great vlogs.

This is really wonderful. I like Gladwell's books, too. Did you ever write to him to tell him how Blink influenced you? I'm sure he'd love to know. I find it very reassuring that books can, indeed, change lives. I know writing them changes mine. 💕 P.S. I look forward to more videos - perhaps on the building/evolution of your house ...

Always looks lovely. May be a 2 minut mid week blog of the weather. Don't need to talk just a short film, sam place same time once a week??? Don't know if that would be interesting to anyone. Love to see how the shoreline is protected by marram grass or does it get washed away in the winter storms. Is it possible to grow native hedging so far up north, or has the island always been bare of trees. 😊

Amazing you found your gut feeling. I think, in my life, i never lived without it for long. Life could be so easy when just following it My question: Why did you choose Tiree in the first place - why not Mull or Skye or Harris? And second question: can you grow veg and fruit on Tiree?

Why did you move to Tiree though? Did you have jobs to go to, as in you already had the idea for your small clothing business? Do you rent? Did you buy a house? Will Yvonne take part in the blogs, showing her dyeing the wool, and design process? Were you a photographer before you moved? Are you able to work part time to add to funds? Do you need them? Has your flock shrunk, or the larger number in a previous video belonged to someone else on the island? What did you do before you left England? Do you miss it? I'm from rural Scotland, but don't think I could be so remote. I live in Milton Keynes and love being near people.

Well I subbed a little while back and keep returning to these vids of life on remote islands in SCOTLAND or UK and I’ve now booked out from my library Blink, but I think I get it already having read one of Gladwells other books. I intend to binge all of your offerings this coming few days. I do have questions or maybe suggestions about how someone like myself might also make this sort of move. Are there rental properties on Tiree is my first question. Public transport or do I need to bring my own? Is there any health care there? How expensive is a small plot of land there ? Can you grow your own food there ? And so on…..

Would love to know the following, in videos? a) - How did you become a part of the local community and how soon they took to you? b) The logistics of island living, when it comes to shopping, drs, etc and c) how your friends and family found it and if they are able to visit often? We live on the south coast of Hampshire, I would imagine some family and friends would find it hard to visit if we moved up there.

So what brought me to your channel is my interest in living off grid in a remote area. My advice to you is take suggestions from your viewers with a grain of slat but do what feels most important to you. As I learned the hard way you can please some of the people some of the time but you can't please all the people all of the time. We all must find our people and they are out there. Since I'm going to be following your channel a lot I thought I would tell you a little bit about myself. I've just become a full time artist and devoting much of my time to being able to live off my art. I do stained glass and jewelry but my jewelry has taken a back seat for the moment. I'm going to be reducing the amount of YT I watch because I have gotten carried away with how many channels I am following now. I'm like a raven that when I see something shinny I must investigate, which is okay for a time but takes away from the time that I should be creating my art. Go figure? ;) I'm very much interested in our natural would and love to get out and explore which I should do more often! I enjoy role playing games like Dungeons & Dragons. I like making my own things that I need as I am getting tired of the crap that is made for us that doesn't last and is expensive. I plan on using YT at some point to share how I make my art as well as promoting it. I'm still deciding if I want to share my nomadic adventure on it as well. Oh, and I do want to live as a nomad for part of the year and spend they other part doing my art. Eventually I want to do some traveling around the world and find a country that shares more of my values to settle down. Anyways, hopefully this helps you get an idea of who your viewers are and I might help others share more about themselves so you can run with your YT channel?
