Matt made it pretty clear at the start of his build that he knows there are bigger wreckers. He is thinking his will be the largest trail capable wrecker, meaning he wants to be able to get it through most jeep trails. I think Merlin,s wrecker should be invited to compete, cool machine.

The thing about Rory is he knows the limits of grip, balance and how to read the lines better than anyone I have seen. He is fearless with perhaps Paul being the only one closeti that intensity. But Paul doesn't have that touch. Paul is like a bull in a China shop he doesn't understand the word easy and its implications. Matts going to be limited by that heavy truck, it will halp in some things but hurt in others. Merlin could be a dark sheep if invited because his truck kind of slides in between the lighter trucks Paul and Rory have. But there are other trucks out there that should be able to enter. Why not an entry fee and up the prizes?

To be fair and bi-partisan Merlin my brother, that's an apples to turnips comparison. Matt's sole intention was to build the biggest all purpose off road / trail recovery tow truck & rock climber designed to recover jeeps and side-by-sides in places where a regular tow truck or one like Heavy D's can't get to.. . Heavy D's truck is a factory built Oshkosh HEMTT, military heavy hauler/ lifter. It's more than capable that we know...., but its size limits its accessibility to smaller, narrower, trails and terrain. Its not something you'd use to recover a Polaris Rzr . Matt's only claim to fame is the part you left out. I like all of your builds, trucks especially this old International, I can see why its not for sale, I wouldn't sell it either. I've been watching you for years, enjoy your content and channel, you are very talented and good at wrenching. I will definitely put it in Matt's comments but you should drop a text to cousin Paul at Fab rats and get him to put a bug in Matt's ear, I'm sure everyone would love to see you and even Steve Darnell from Welderup at the Rodeo. Cheers and Great video

To try and compare HeavyDave's HET converted wrecker with Matt's Off Road Recovery Wrecker is apples and oranges. Matt's vehicle is for single vehicle recovery in extreme environments, whereas the HET is designed for heavy vehicle recovery and would not be able to access the same offroad situations. They can be both considered the world's largest in their individual category.

No way to put a dollar value on something as unique as that build, It is priceless. Someone could have endless amount of cash and materials but never put together something like that build ever again. My old man rebuilt a Power Wagon he recovered from the local quarry for $300 but to him and our family it is a priceless family heirloom and could never be replaced. It is all original at the moment and we have plans to make it a bit more reliable so we can take it to a show and share the history. My dad had the same rig, it had the dual axle in the rear. It also was used as a drill rig. It had all the cable draw works that was need to run the drilling. My grand father built the entire thing. My dad worked the crap out of it. He later sold it to a gold mining outfit and was trucked to Nevada. If any one ever sees it, it should be up in the Halayleau Junction area was where it was put to work. I sure would like to find it and get some pics. I have fond memories of growing up and working the rig with my dad. Powered by Hercules inline 6 front and rear. Think my grandfather bought it as it was army surplus.

sorry this video really made me look at you differently. It all seemed to be your feeling hurt you not invited which i havent seen you really down alot of towing recovers with your rig which i think is cool I like it, havent seen you interact with others except Fabrats your cousin Paul. You say you dont watch much of Matt's videos but things you heard you were ready throw him under the bus for and try make him look stupid. Matt has always said he knows his not Worldest biggest he said for what his is designing it to do where to go what to haul to him it is. Matt & HeavyD both said theirs are 2 different Tow Truck do totally different things go different places, they never had beef or problem. But you tried make everyone in youtube land see Matt as stupid or as a liar cause HeavyD & people Overseas have worldest biggest. Then say everyones tow trucks named towmater but you YOU have licensed towmater I did not see Tow on license. But Rory truck is Trailmater not TowMater. This video really made an outside person who really liked your videos even though you have serious ton and seem not to be comfortable on camera I like you and the stuff you make is cool. But you took a friendly competition that was between youtubers who have friendships have been working doing things together and made it about you and if you not going be there you not just want ruin the fun you want to bad talk make others look stupid throwing people under bus. I sorry but someone gotta tell you what you said how you acted how it came across to people and it wasnt a good look for you. At the same time you took this attitude and tried to prove how better you are than Matt or anyone of the other guys towing recovering a car out of the sand and instead you really tore the lady's car up. There was no reason you could not have used the truck your flag pole to lift car over the rock or up enough to pivot car differently or so many other things but nope. Then you acted like it was no big deal, that you meant do that. That was horrible the tow truck driver was freaking out cause if she complains its his rear going have pay for it. I think you could of done a better job, especially if your truck can do all you say that you can do all you say. I am not a person who comments on videos often and not negatively I hate drama. So before you think I am bashing you I am not I really just want you take stepback and see and hear how this video wasnt a good look for you, how things came across. I REALLY DO ENJOY WATCHING YOUR VIDEOS, SEEING THINGS YOU BUILD! Enjoy watching people work hard build awesome machines and I love to learn how to do things

Merlin, that was a great video giving the history and background of your truck, the main chassis and powertrain setup and some of the uses for it and rescues you've done with it. Your builds are always well-thought-out, practical creations as far as their intended use goes, they work AND they look cool doing their thing. Your wrecker tow truck recovery vehicle has as much character as the distance from the bottom of Death Valley to the top of the Colorado Rockies...it's cool. As many people have commented, we do very much think and hope that Matt will invite you to take your wrecker to participate in the Tow Truck Olympics. You are Paul's cousin, you work with Paul on a lot of stuff he's got going on and you've been in a lot of Paul's videos in the last six months. You might mention to Paul that you'd like to be included in the Tow Truck Olympics with your own, unique, one-of-a-kind, self-built rig...I would think Paul would want you to be included and so would Matt. We hope it happens as you've got a hell of a truck and you have driving, repair, recovery and towing skills and experience like Rory, Paul, Matt, etc.

That is one great looking machine you have there! YES, you should get in on the off-road wrecker Olympics! Been following the Matt's Off Road Recovery build of his off-road, rock crawling wrecker. I think that's the major point, that it's so specialized. But hey, you should definitely call over to their yard and tell them you have a rig they will want to see. Or just drive it on in there. Watching enough of their videos, I think you'd be warmly welcomed, they all seem like the sort of friendly types you find among off-road enthusiasts..

Just a pity there wasn't someone there with a boom that could've lifted the car slightly so the rock could've been moved rather than drag the car across it.

Could you do a video with this rig in the dunes, or on a buggy trail? Matt has said repeatedly that diesels don't do sand. It would be interesting to see what tow mater can do on that terrain.

The grain structures of the sand at Body Beach is just slightly larger than on the sand dunes of Hurricane, one in particular was large enough to high center a car. LOL

The more comments I read on what Matt says the less respect I have for him. I watched him from early days and like his style but a) he doesn't have the biggestwrecker and b) petrol is no better than diesel on sand if you know how to drive.

@@thebrowns5337 I recall Matt explaining why he does things the way he does. In the earlier videos where he did off-road rescues using just his Jeep and occasionally a trailer, he explained the type of vehicles he gets called out for, the type of terrain - especially the very fine very dry deep sand, and the tools and techniques that he learned and developed, and consequently what aspects of the rescue vehicle are important for that combination. I can see that vehicle weight was very important to him and I believe diesel engines are usually heavier then an equivalent gasoline engine and have different power/torque characteristics that might not suit the specific techniques that he uses. Others do things differently but that doesn't make either wrong. I don't think you can pick out one thing and say he is wrong, its all part of that particular persons' way of getting the job done.

@@thebrowns5337 A) I doubt he cares about your level of respect for him any more than we do B) he said he wants to build the largest wrecker that can do jeep trails since that's where he does his rescues. You won't see heavyD bringing the oshkosh on a jeep trail C) diesels just don't Rev as quickly and rely on the turbo to spool first so he's right if both vehicles are at a stand still and he still won't have to worry about keeping it in the power band while moving in deep sand and such, like the diesel. I know both my diesels fall flat on their faces if I'm below the power band and while I love them, they're just not ideal for fine sand unless you have wide floaty tires

If that were my truck I might consider attaching a snatch block where a trailer hitch receiver might normally be so I could redirect the angle of my winch line, maybe even an additional winch down there so that snatch block pivot point becomes adjustable.... and used in conjunction with other tie-down points can really get you a lot of options. This is a very cool truck, especially like that custom zep gas can
