I think in essence what he was saying is that its about time and place. When alone with friends or a group that gets it, you can do those hilarious and slightly unhinged things. When among people who don't lean that way you tone it down.

It natural for a laborers to put themselves down given all other trade look down on them. Dealt with this on my first building site after 7 years in highway construction. It took 3 years of this current project to solidify our position as competent and diverse workers capable of doing not only our scope of work but that of the other trades and even doing it better in some cases.
