Tour & Drive EP 20 - 1983 VW Quantum GL5 Wagon

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

A unique little station wagon my wife and I bought back in September! This was recorded in October. This little cherry was rescued from the Washington state woods in 2020 after a few years parked as the previous owner had passed away. It's in beautiful condition, drives as nicely as it looks, and really is probably the nicest example I've ever seen, and the ONLY one I've seen in this color! Enjoy!

I'm German and my father was a driving instructor, we've had quite a few of the Passat Variant over the years. In contrast to the German model, your car has a completely different front. I owned an Audi 80 GLS when my engine broke and I put one from the Passat GT 16 V in it including the complete front axle. Warm greetings from Germany.

I had one of these too, I got it from a GF's mom, the fender rubbed on the tire and she couldn't fix it. I crashed it, drunk like a fool.

Super video. I too have an early car...in Mountain Mist Green. It was an accidental purchase with a pair of Fox wagons that I wanted...turns out the Foxes went on their way and the stupid Quantum hooked me good. I was a Rabbit Guy up to that point...the comfort level and sporty driving ability of the Quantum was even nicer than the Dasher I'd driven for a fair amount of time...and then I found out they came in Syncro... Case closed. I hadda have one. Now I have quite a number of them...lol A few bits of your info weren't 100% accurate, but I luv the in depth tour of the car. My project daily is a pre-facelift factory syncro car...not certain how those happened, but I've heard of a few around the Pacific North Wet. Thank you for posting! I've found that you can locate some hard to find Quantum stuff thru Parts Place Inc. The folks are there are a pleasure to do business with.

The best car I ever owned was a gl5 Estate. It had the Audi straight 5 injection and was very quick. It was also very comfortable, as the seats were like armchairs. I wish I had kept it, but my wife needed a car as well, so I sold it and bought her a Polo and I had a Volkswagen Caddy with a truckman top so I could carry my gear around. Obviously neither of them came close to the Passat.

My parents bought one new in the early to mid 80s, but the exterior was a gold/bronze color and we did not have a sun roof. Thanks you for the video.

Correction, The wheels are from a 2002 Cabrio glx. I am a source of useless Volkswagen information.

I owned an 86 quantum sedan for my second car, front wheel drive with the 5-speed. What a blast that was. Also the moon roof on mine was electric but didn't work by the time i bought it during 2002.

How was it overall owning one? Looking to buy one but worried about parts being hard to find

Engine parts are not bad but the body parts can be difficult unless sourced from other countries.

Really great video!!! Looks very similar to my German 1983 Passat Wagon, even the same color. Mine however is a true Passat, and not a Quantum- Imported into the US in 1989. Mine is the base base model, though. No “frills” and is the “Formel E” 5 speed manual. My window rubber is also very shrinked… hoping I can find a way to fix it. As you know, parts are hard to find.

Awesome! Not sure what a real base model looks like. Would it be a CL model or maybe even just an L model? Yeah the shrinkage could at least be stopped with 303 Aerospace protectant I would bet. Would keep it nice and supple.

Good to see a pretty in depth video on the Quantum, surely one of the least loved VWs ever sold in the USA. I have an 82 Coupe-which was only sold in 82 and part of 83 here. Trim parts are very scarce to say the least. Finding parts for a 411/412 is a walk in the park in comparison. Like every other Quantum, I need new door window scrapers and trim. My car is overall in excellent condition though.

@@yodacode43 I’m assuming that’s Jahnai Pearson-we both got our cars about the same time. I bought some interior material that he had left. He has a really nice coupe and just picked up a sedan.

Yeah Michael, sure this wagon IS one of the least loved VW´s and not only in the US - even over here in germany. I have one with 5-cylinders (1,9 gaser) the second in my posession. In "ancient times " I used this model as daily driver in summer and winter round the clock and it really NEVER had to be towed and it only - rarely - needed quite normal standard spare parts. Really a m a z i n g reliable car . . .

Is this engine based on the 2.2 audi s1 rally? if it, i think with a turbo would sound really good.
