Tour and Explore Tetbury, The Cotswolds, Gloucestershire

Welcome.
I’m Anne Bartlett, a Blue Badge Tour Guide based in Gloucestershire. This video is filmed in and around the historic market town of Tetbury in the South Cotswolds and is number seven of my short virtual tours of some of the beautiful Cotswold towns and villages.
Tetbury is on the main road between Bath and Cirencester. I’ve heard so many people say that they’ve just driven through the town without stopping; others say they’ve taken a curb side parking space along the Main Street limiting their time in the town to one hour. Tetbury has an amazing history and heritage and I hope that when you next drive towards Tetbury, I will have inspired you to use a car park and that you will spend a few hours exploring this gem of a town.
Tetbury became prosperous in the Middle Ages because of its location and the numerous flocks of sheep that grazed on the hills. The wool was highly sought after on the continent because of its quality. It was said that the best wool in Europe was English and the best wool in England was from the Cotswolds. Tetbury became an important centre for the sale of wool, and yarn as well as agricultural products.
Tetbury has a large number of grand historic buildings built by wealthy merchants and landowners. There are plaques placed on some of them by the local historical society, with an interesting account of their original purpose and owners.
The iconic market hall dating back to 1655 is one of my favourite buildings.
It was built during the time when Oliver Cromwell was Lord Protector of England, a role in which he remained until his death in 1658. How different life was for the people of Tetbury then!
I hope you will visit Tetbury soon and will spend time exploring the town and make your own discoveries.

Ahhh! feeling homesick I remember my days out at the Arboretum, tea afterwards at Two Toads or the Waggon and Horses, all steamed up with the damp earth and leaves in the Autumn.

Thank you so much for your comments. I’m very glad that you are finding these videos helpful as well as enjoyable. I have other bits of film ready but I’m busy meeting holidaymakers to show them around so I’m kept very busy. It is finding enough time to complete further videos. I expect things to calm down next month so keep a look out for the next one.

Thank you Eugenio. I'm really pleased that you enjoyed my video on Tetbury. There is a fabulous arboretum at Westonbirt near Tetbury. What is really special is the treetop walkway which gives you a different perspective of the trees. I bought an annual membership this year so that I could visit as many times as I liked. I hope that you enjoy your visit as much as I have mine.
