Totally unexpected Namibia | Canyons, crickets and cows | Family African overland adventure

This week on our Family African overland adventure we find ourselves needing to bribe our way out of Lesotho, before driving across South Africa and in to Namibia.
John meets a billion crickets and Tara visits some very social birds, and we take an unexpected trip to a Namibian cattle farm, where we discover the amazing techniques being employed to make farming in a drought land possible. Amazing!
All in all an epic week of adventure for the Newbys.
We are the Newbys, John, Tara, and our two little boys Crusoe and Sawyer. We’re a family who are pursuing an alternative lifestyle, and after two years of full time travel we’ve taken root on an abandoned farm in Northern Portugal which we’re renovating into our dream off-grid homestead. We release new videos every Sunday sharing our story, and we’d love for you to be a part of it with us. Please remember to SUBSCRIBE if you haven’t already, it’s free and super easy to do and it helps us hugely.

Beautiful scenery and a superbly put together film. My only time at the canyon was in August 1984, where we stayed at Ai-Ais Springs. In those days, Namibia was called South West Africa and there was no border post when entering from South Africa either by air or by road. If you get any rain on your travels, you might see a range of Palearctic migrant birds on the telegraph wires as you head north in Namibia. I can recommend that you try a tafel beer! Drive safely on those dirt roads.

Goodness... the drive thru Namibia looks like the drive thru Kansas (USA)... so much flatness. There's a city on the eastern border and one on the western border, not much in between. Very straight roads, there was corn on one side of the road and soybeans on the other. We'd get excited if we saw some cows because they were something taller than soybeans. Eventually we saw the Rockie Mountains in the distance, they looked like bumps. The closer you got, the bigger they got. Beautiful, here the Grand Canyon is spectacular... the multiple layers of colorful rocks. As usual, it's fun to follow along. If someone tried to solicit a bribe at the Canadian border, you could record the badge number and turn the person in. Aggravating, but if that is the only bump in your travels, you will have been blessed. Crusoe is growing so fast, he is a very happy boy.

Seeing those crickets reminds me of the hatching of mayflies in the Northeast USA. You'd have to hold your breath just to pump gas. Mayflies aren't smart enough to get out of the way, I think they only live for a day, then they die. Wasn't a pleasant aroma.

@@TheNewbys The operative word here is May. I would avoid the northeast for all of May beginning of June. Somewhere in the archives of Queen Elizabeth's visit to Canada, it shows the Royal family having to deal with midges, may want to do your homework. Again, I love watching your channel.

Hello friend! Yes, there is certainly plenty of space here between us and the next folk, but thankfully we’ve never felt so remote that help wouldn’t be nearby if we needed it which is reassuring with Crusoe onboard. Thanks for being here and for writing to us, always great to hear from you. Have a happy week and we will see you on Sunday! ☀️ 😊
