Revealing an ABANDONED mining Town in Africa Luderitz Namibia

Our African overland self drive journey continues this week with a visit to an abandoned mining town deep in the Namibian desert. We also go in search of the ever elusive wild horses of the Namibian desert. It’s a full week for the Newbys, the adventure and journey continues in this epic African van life adventure.
We are the Newbys, John, Tara, and our two little boys Crusoe and Sawyer. We’re a family who are pursuing an alternative lifestyle, and after two years of full time travel we’ve taken root on an abandoned farm in Northern Portugal which we’re renovating into our dream off-grid homestead. We release new videos every Sunday sharing our story, and we’d love for you to be a part of it with us. Please remember to SUBSCRIBE if you haven’t already, it’s free and super easy to do and it helps us hugely.
Thank you for being here. We hope that we can inspire you to Be Brave, Think Big and to Explore.

There is a herd of wild horses in Hermanus. The Rooisand horses. Legend has it they could have been left from the Boer War or belonged to a farmer who just left them there. We love your show by the way and inspire us to travel.

I am so glad that you visited Kolmanskop. We went there in 1984 and in those days you needed to buy a permit in Luderitz. We had a guide called Gunther who kept teasing us about snakes! I remember the bowling alley in one of the buildings. Luderitz was a town in those days with a frontier type atmosphere and we had thick early morning fog, typical of the Namibian coast. The locals like to drink chasers with a beer and I recall drinking schnapps in the bar where we were staying! It was very German. Another excellent film well put together.

I am watching this many months later, so you might not see this comment. But I had to add my voice. Namibia is truly one of the magical places in this world. It is so hard to put into words what it feels like in that desert. I was there in 2009, and also visited Kolmanskop. That feeling you both had in the hospital was there when I walked into it. It was so eerie, such a weird vibe to it, and I also got goosebumps walking in there. In fact, I felt off-kilter for the rest of that day. Beautiful video and so nice to see it through your eyes. Sending lots of love to your family from South Africa. 💜

How spectacular... Is Namibia all desert? I saw a special on tv about that ghost town... fascinating. The small section of town for contractors (black folks) was kept further away from the Germans. As John was doing his little tour, I concentrated on watching Crusoe. His eyes were soaking it all up, almost like he was seeing the ghosts. My granddaughter can see a ghost... her Pappa Shorty comes to visit her. We never press too much, we don't want to make her feel like a freak. People say that babies and children can be visited by spirits. That cold chill you got would be interpreted by a medium as a spirit passing by you. I agree, your vlogs are too short. They are highly educational and entertaining seeing the little man grow. One thought I had was what could those poor horses be eating. They looked skinny. Love to you three, stay safe.

  • @TheNewbys

Hello Cathy! Great to hear from you as always, how are you? Namibia is all desert in the south, but as you head north it definitely gets greener and more lush. Yes, you’re quite right about the accommodation for the contractors, they slept 48 people to a room, appalling to think that went on with such opulence just across the sand. Crusoe grows more and more curious and has just started crawling so it’s all fun and games over here 😂 Tara had a similar experience as your granddaughter when she was little and her grandfather passed away, there’s certainly a lot about the world that goes on without us being able to see or quite fully understand it. There’s magic and mystery everywhere. The horses are remarkable for surviving where they do, hard to know how but they’ve been roaming the desert for over 100 years now. Amazing. and thank you, that’s so kind and we will work on some longer vlogs for sure, it’s feedback we are getting often and it’s amazing! Have a super week and see you next Sunday. 😊

I have a complaint to make... your videos are too short! 😁 Fascinating look at that atmospheric ghost town, would of liked to have seen more of the seaside town too! Would it be possible to include more of your domestic side too, setting up camp and campsites? See, definitely need longer videos! Hope you're all well and travelling safe. ❤️

Hi Claire! Complaints like that are just fine!!! We are working hard on making sure we get as much content and filming done as possible, you are probably right too about the more domestic aspects of our videos. We don’t often put much of that type of stuff in, and we should. Thanks so much for watching and taking this journey with us, your support is so very much appreciated! 👍🙏❤️

You know listening to the story of this town, something that really bugged me was that the poor African man who found the diamonds on the platform and handed them to his employer didn't even get a share. So typical of how other nations everywhere exploit the local people, I felt really sad for that man.

@@TheNewbys I’m really enjoying your videos, they’re very informative about the places you visit. Your narration is excellent. I’ve made this comment on your Safari van tour video but it’s got so many comments you’ll probably miss it. For a way to convert your dining area into a sofa, and a future bed for Crusoe, you could create a pull out lidded drawer in the section where you currently store his clothes, that would fill the gap between the two seats, and slide away, complete with cushion, when you need to use the table. Much less faff than dropping a piece of wood into the gap and gives you storage too. This couple have done it in their van build.. Forward to 19:30 kzread.info/dash/bejne/q2l9y7lyj9bbhtI.html If you rolled out a children’s Duvalay on top it’d be a comfy bed in seconds. If you‘ve not discovered a Duvalay yet they’re brilliant! kzread.info/dash/bejne/a3ZmyM2QY8SyprQ.html

They eat the grass and bushes near Aus. Some extra fodder is grown near Luderitz for the dry season. We try to help them as best we can considering they've become wild over the decades. During wet seasons like during this year, the whole area between Aus and Luderitz is a sea of grass. We had some excellent rain in the area this year, so they've been having a ton of grass so they're not that thin anymore.
