Torture Testing Rail Rods for San Diego Tuna Fishing

We simulate pounds of drag to push these rods to their limits. As mentioned multiple times in the video, we went to the extreme to see how the rods would handle more than their recommended drag strength. We're pretty impressed with their performance overall!
You're in good hands for our local fishing with ANY of these rods. H&M has quite the rental rod selection to help you out.
No fisherman were hurt in the making of this video, but please do not try this at home!
Thanks again to H&M Landing & Nate for helping us out with this test.

    Hey, Steve, nice engineered solution for the spotter 😅. As you both mentioned, that angle loads the rod blanks differently than what would be done on the boat rail. Likely, most of the rods would have passed under normal fishing conditions even with the 100lb load.

    All the pressure from the weight onto that corner between the rod and 2X4 is a very small surface area. If the rod is laid flat onto the rail then this would distribute the pressure/weight out more evenly.

    This simulation has definitely happened on the boat, I’ve seen it first hand. While it’s not as common, people do have a tendency to high stick when they aren’t prepared to or haven’t fought a big fish before. Obviously this was taken to this extreme, but yes all these rods handle plenty well for our usual fishing conditions!

    Have 2 custom UC Vipers being made right now for this season. However as a price point I did use the Okuma PCHXXH as my rail rods and usually fished 35lbs of drag. They all held on fish to 100. Have a 187 with a XXXXH.

    Great video, guys (and gals). Wonderful demonstration of what conditions NOT to get into. Let the rod and reel work for you and don't go to full/sunset unless the fish is heading toward the horizon and there is no other choice. Now, perhaps I'm too old school, but was wondering if you thought about including CalStar or Seeker rail rods in this test? Regardless, well done, and thanks!

    It's a torture test, not a "how to land a big one tutorial". We just wanted to bend these rods to the point of failure which would never be a goal when its fish on! Agreed, definitely never go full sunset. Something has to give whether it's the drag, the knot, the rod, etc. At this time, we tested rods that were available to us because they rods taken directly from the landing's rental rod lineup. If anyone from these companies or otherwise gives us rods to torture test, we will gladly make a video including Seeker, Calstar, United Composites, or others.

    Love to see how the 7’6” UC Raptor would hold to 80 lb? Also the top 2X4 that supports the rail rod could maybe be tipped up to the same angle that the rod starts out at, so the rail grip gets 3 1/2” of support, not just a sharp corner. That seems to just invite a break off.

  • @TackleShopNate

    @TackleShopNate

    2 ай бұрын

    There is a big range of gear that I would consider "high end" including all these rods tested. Do you HAVE to spend seeker, or United Composite money to land a big fish? No... If you do it often, will these rods make your life easier and help you land more fish without being repaired or replaced? Yes... Find something with enough backbone to use the rod to leverage the fish but a soft enough tip to keep some bend in the rod while fighting it.

  • @TackleShopNate

    @TackleShopNate

    2 ай бұрын

    By definition, the upper grip. Typically a longer upper grip (above the reel) that's long enough to set the rod down on the rail without beating up the blank and the rail. Typically these days it's a 7'-8' composite rod with enough backbone to use the rod as a fulcrum to lift the fish while keeping your rod tip a safe distance from the boat.

  • @Shane7276-lj1yj
