TORQ MOTO - Rob Herring - "I never liked the limelight!"

‘The Fish’ torqs!
In this episode of the Torq Moto Podcast Show, driven by Talon we have former multiple British motocross champion and former GP front runner Rob ‘The Fish’ Herring join us ‘Jeffro’ Perrett and DocWob on the studio couches to reflect back on his illustrious motocross career.
It’s another wonderful trip down MX memory lane as Herring goes back to his early days racing motocross in the U.K. where he made a huge impact, not only for his raw speed and amazing ‘American style’, even though he grew up in South Africa, but also for his eye-catching ‘Blue Stratos’ race kit! A talking point and reference that people still remember him by to this day.
No doubt about it, he was a breath of fresh air when he burst onto the British Motocross scene. Herring was ridiculously fast with effortless style and influenced many of the next generation of riders who studied his riding.
Herring explains how he moved to South Africa at the age of seven and how his journey in the sport started and how riding and racing in South Africa honed his skills and ability to do things on British tracks that others simply wouldn’t see or couldn’t do.
Quiet and unassuming Herring certainly let his riding do his talking at the races but now many years down the line, he talks with great affection on his career with vivid detail, from his opening moto win at the first ever British GP at Foxhill in 1992, through to playing his often overlooked part on the winning British MXDN team that put an end to the 13-year win streak for Team USA at Roggenburg, Switzerland 30 years ago.
In fact, we had so much to talk about that this episode is the first of a two-parter with ‘the Fish’.
Don’t forget to like and subscribe to keep up to speed with past or future episodes.

Fantastic interview with the legend Rob Herring. You mentioned Belle Vue Stadium Supercross, we as a family were there, my dad was part of the Cambridge Junior Scramble Club that ran the meeting with the promoters. My brother raced in tte event in the Schoolboy races during the weekend. Thd track was knarly. I'll never forget Rob mKung the largest jump of the track, a double step down look like 'childs play' he was sk stylish. No other rider rode like that, not even Jeff Ward. I have lots of photos of that event and thd riders line ups. Remember Georges Jobe rode, Eric Geboers, A J Whiting, Guy Cooper, Jeff Ward, along with plenty of others top European riders. Oh amd not forgetting Dickie Dye.🙂 Alec Wright was there along with his son Colin. It was a truly unique occasion, of which i was so pleased to have witnessed.

Watched that with tears of happiness, remember the fish riding,I'm sure they shoe horned a 490 yam engine in a 250 frame? Where is that bike now? ROB rode a black yam for Ride? loved the look of that bike! bad luck prevented you winning at least one world championship and a few more British! such a pleasure watching your golden years. Ebworth laying the bike flat over the a rider thank you! x

First time I saw Rob Herring was at the famous 1985 farleigh castle 500gp riding the support class on a Kawasaki. People were amazed just how far he was jumping on one of the downhill jumps far longer than top GP riders.Alongside Jeremy Whatley probably the most talented rider of his generation in terms of pure talent.

Big mistake.
