Toro Timemaster versus Ferris FW15 - Cut Quality (Round Two)

Фильм және анимация

#billygoatlawanservice #torotimemaster #ferrisfw15
In this video, I compared the cut quality between the 2021 Toro Timemaster (Model # 21199) and the Ferris FW15 (Model # 5901737). Both mowers had the stock mulching blades.

I mow with the Ferris (600-some hours), and it is very easy to maneuver (with swivel wheels up front). The drive is so strong that it can climb a hill easier than you can. The drive system is open differential which sends all the power to the wheel that has the least resistance to rotation causing the outside drive wheel on a turn to have all the torque allowing the mower to turn with ease. The Ferris does win-row when mulching, and it is unsatisfactory for me. I have the mulch kit which I took off. I now use an operator controlled chute discharge when I need to prevent debris from blowing into beds. This mower can go through deep grass without bogging down and has a very nice cut/stripes. I have used to Toro Timewaster and it bogs easily and is nowhere near the build that the Ferris is. Yes, the Toro/Exmark Turfmaster is half the price, but it is also half the machine. I have done repair favors for friends with the Toro/Exmark, and I can say that their machines break down with far greater frequency and cannot handle zone 5a cool season grasses in the Spring time near as well or as fast as a Ferris. To date, my only repairs have been the blade engagement cable (twice), but I found a factory defect where the bracket below the mower was in the wrong place causing abrasion to the engagement cable. I relocated the bracket and I have not had any issues in the past 400 hours. I cannot say the same for the lighter built Toro/Exmark. I hope this may help someone out there.

Greatly appreciate your comment. You mentioned many valid points. I agree the FW15 is twice the machine compared Toro and Exmark and even the Scag 30. The FW15 is in a class of its own, nothing really compares to it (That I know of).

Timemaster speaks to me prior to every season, telling me to buy it, use it and abuse it.. But unfortunately I haven't seen the reason to get one since the scope of my business remains relatively the same regarding the number and size of the lawns I have (you loose a few customers, you win a few). And I'm handling it just fine with 2 Honda 21" mowers.. Hopefully I will get a few larger lots this year but if that happens I'll be getting some cheaper residential zero turn like the Toro Timecutter and skip the 30" Timemaster since the finishing mowers will still be those Hondas.. But man I can't explain it to you guys how much I would like to own this puppy.. Maybe in a few years when my business inexplicably explodes ten fold.. 😅😅😅.. But then I guess I'll be eying the FW15...

Thanks for commenting! I would stick with smaller yards if all possible. Profit levels are higher using 21” mowers. Bigger yards require bigger and more expensive mowers to maintain, not to mention the need of trailers to haul them around. Which means more overhead expenses. I agree, residential zero turn mowers will do just fine if you don’t have a lot of big yards to mow but still would need a trailer. We definitely do our share of push mowing with the Timemaster 30. It is a timesaver over the 21” mowers. They very efficient on weekly yards.

Also about last month one of my idler pulleys gave out... basically it breaks down way too much for me to rely on....

  • @BillyGoatLawnService

I totally agree! The timemaster isn’t the most liable mower but the quality of cut is amazing if the grass isn’t too wet and/or high. This is surely a high maintenance mower if you use it commercially. Use far as the engine knock, make sure all 3 engine mount bolts are tight. If they are, might be a sign that the engine is getting ready to lock up. Start changing the oil more frequently may help prolong the life of the engine. I put hour meters on all of our timemasters to monitor oil changes and replacement parts. Our oldest timemaster (2017) has 625 hours of use with a slight engine knock. The 2 newer timemasters (2021) have over 400 hours each.

I give both round 1 and round 2 to TM.. Ferris getting a beat down. Toro may bog down a bit because it has better suction and air flow and it suspends the clippings longer under the deck for further mulching. Thanks for commenting! Both mowers have their pros and cons. I personally like to toro over the Ferris.

Hate the narrow wheel marks left behind from the Toro, wide wheels on Ferris look better

Thanks for the comment. I like the wider tires on the Ferris. Plus has better grip on hills.

I have both and yes I love the Ferris even though it's heavy. I took the mulch blades off and just used regular lift blades they cut nicer.

First time buyer for Toro 30. I had to return 5 and buy from 4 different Lowes stores. That sound of the belt when you engage the blades, it does that a lot then the blades wouldn't engage anymore. The one i have now works better than the last 4 but every time i use it it pisses me off for like the first ten mins, even mowing low grass. So disappointing and tomorrow i will be returning that pos. They're not gonna keep my money got me f up.

Thanks for commenting! Toro has been selling the timemaster for a decade now. They made some improvements since then but there are still a lot of customer complaints with certain parts wearing fast.
