When I was a little girl (way back in the 50’s) whenever my mother was baking a cake but got stuck on a phone call, she tell me to break a straw off the broom and test the cake. Yes, I know, the broom. No one thought twice about that then.

I've been making this cake since I was knee high to a grasshopper ... taught to me by my Grandma. I do have to give one suggestion. The recipe by Grandma used said to stir in the vanilla to your topping right before you put it on your cake. If you add at the beginning, you're literally cooking all the vanilla out of the topping. Food for thought. Love your channel.

You're not cooking the vanilla out that way. You'd be cooking the alcohol out and leaving the flavor of the vanilla.

It is a rule of baking to add flavorings after removing from the heat it prevents burning(scorching) the essence.
@ethelnewberry151
Жыл бұрын
No...That information is not true. The reason being by adding it last, while it is still cooking, the Alcohol is cooked out of it. It only needs rapid cooking for thirty seconds or so, over a good medium fire, just so it bubbles up.

When I was growing up, my mom use to make a topping similar to yours except she used crushed walnuts. Once the topping was on she would broil it in the oven for a couple minutes until it started bubbling, then she took it out. The topping when cooled had a real nice taste and texture to it. I recall her using this on chocolate cake and a few other kinds. Love your video!

That looks amazing to try. Please try to get into the habit of pouring hot liquids away from you not towards you. My late F-I-Law was a retired cheif Fireman. He once told me that many of their calls were burn related accidents while cooking. I had been draining hot water from boiled potatoes like how you just poured your topping on. He saw me & immediately corrected me. I always remember that. Scalding hot burns to the skin can lead to months of recovery. Please don't think that I am being rude pointing this out, better safe than sorry. Going to make that cake today. Merry Christmas. 🎄💕
