Tori Amos - Winter (From "Live At Montreux 91/92")
Available Now: mercury-studios.lnk.to/ToriAm...
These two concerts from Montreux in 1991 and 1992 catch Tori Amos right at the start of her solo career. The first from July 1991 was filmed a few months before the release of her "Little Earthquakes" album and the second from July 1992 followed a few months after. There is a fascinating progression from one year to the next as she grows in confidence and skill as a live performer, buoyed by the critical and commercial success of the album. Naturally most of the songs are taken from "Little Earthquakes" but there are also rare songs from her various EPs released across the two years which didn't make it onto the album including her distinctive takes on Led Zeppelin's "Whole Lotta Love" and "Thank You" and Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit".
Snow can wait
I forgot my mittens
Wipe my nose
Get my new boots on
I get a little warm in my heart
When I think of winter
I put my hand in my father's glove
I run off
Where the drifts get deeper
Sleeping beauty trips me with a frown
I hear a voice
"Your must learn to stand up for yourself
Cause I can't always be around"
He says
When you gonna make up your mind
When you gonna love you as much as I do
When you gonna make up your mind
Cause things are gonna change so fast
All the white horses are still in bed
I tell you that I'll always want you near
You say that things change my dear
Boys get discovered as winter melts
Flowers competing for the sun
Years go by and I'm here still waiting Withering where some snowman was
Mirror mirror where's the crystal palace
But I only can see the myself
Skating around the truth who I am
But I know dad the ice is getting thin
When you gonna make up your mind
When you gonna love you as much as I do
When you gonna make up your mind
Cause things are gonna change so fast
All the white horses are still in bed
I tell you that I'll always want you near
You say that things change my dear
Hair is grey
And the fires are burning
So many dreams
On the shelf
You say I wanted you to be proud of me
I always wanted that myself
He says
When you gonna make up your mind
When you gonna love you as much as I do
When you gonna make up your mind
Cause things are gonna change so fast
All the white horses have gone ahead
I tell you that I'll always want you near
You say that things change
My dear

I regard her as one of the great talents of the past 50 years but to me she is sadly under appreciated. A piano prodigy with a voice that is raw and crystal pure and a musical scalpel that opens your heart. Brilliant by every standard.

What is especially interesting in this video: This is Tori at age 28, just before she reached superstardom. But listen to this carefully. Winter is one of her greatest songs, mabye THE greatest. Every nuance is here. Her touch, every roll of the tongue, every click of her lips. It was complete art, right there, and it never changed. Amazing.

Such a travesty that people today think that live music is all about having 20 half naked dancers on stage, with a seizure inducing light show, while some hack lip synchs to their inane drivel. When her first CD "Little Earthquakes" came out I remember feeling really sad because she was obviously enormously talented and that her career would probably not last. I thought that anyone who could pour as much emotion as she does into her music was headed for some kind of melt-down. We have seen it way too many times. I am so thankful I was wrong.

It's actually quite the opposite more often than not. It's the ones that keep their emotions inside that have meltdowns. It must b e remembered that not all songs or inspiration for them is completely literal, I believe she says this is a song, for my father , and not about my father. So one can not really say , oh that's what her dad said to her or oh that's how she felt about him, most songs are crafted from bits and pieces of feelings maybe some even borrowed from something one heard someone say, in any case there is no real proof in the lyrics that this is a father ,daughter song, just that it is for him, which could mean ,written with him in mind , or just dedicated to him at the moment she sang it at Montrose, though of course we would like to believe it is a personal father ,daughter statement, but as Bob Dylan often said when interviewed about a song said, well you can think what you will about it, but that's not what it means!, but it is what it means to you that is important and gives it it's real appeal! Once you write a song and send it in to the world it is what it means to those hearing it!

I fell in love with this on its release and it still hits me hard all these years on. I remember Little Earthquakes being released a few months apart from Nevermind by Nirvana. Two different sounding records you would find hard to come by, but my musical tastes of the early 90's embraced both of them and they both spoke to me in different ways. The power of her voice and emotion is something I rarely feel in artists but she gets me every time. As soon as I hear this Im straight back in early 1992. All the hopes, all the dreams, all the possibilities of a life yet to be lived. Thank you Tori.
