    Love how you chosen a clip of Ilia traning with a pool noodle stuck on his pad mans chest, simulating a long jabbing arm, and that is exactly what he was doing in the fight to Volks lancing jab. And yeah I also noticed that Volk dong that same jab over and over was giving Ilia crazy good reads and he adjusted slighty every single time getting ever closer.

    Yessss…..very good. I was telling my brother AJ to “re-watch” Ilia’s foot spacing, and compare it to Volk, especially the deception w/ the rear foot. Someone asked for a Gaethje v Fiziev breakdown as apparently no one has done any worthy analysis, and I’ll make the focus of the video, hopefully, on this same subject. Thanks again, cheers 🍻

    Great read on a great fight. I don’t even think volk had a had a bad game-plan or fought poorly. I honestly think that the best adjustment he could make is going making the decision to go left and go into the fire MORE. He needs to tag topuria and make him respect his feints. But exchanging topuria at all is scary. As it can go well until it doesn’t. But just trying to keep a lid on topuria is near impossible for 25 minutes.

    thanks, and couldn't agree more. I really just wanted to focus on how fn good Ilia is, rather than down play Volk. I don't know who's going to challenge him @ 145, but to me there was a skill disparity more than a "cracked chin", though both can be true. Hope all is well, feels so good to chat with you all

    Thank you, I agree, and the striking coach in me sees some things as well. When someone is no selling your feints, no matter the success in past fights, you have to start “going on the 1”, like Izzy v Pereira 2. Make the first strike count in other words. I hear Ilia is quite the grappler as well, but keeping the distance short was paramount one way or another. I don’t even know who the biggest threat is for Ilia at this point….? Thanks again for the kind words and fresh take, cheers 🍻

  • @PiffFighting

    @PiffFighting

    I think Ilia has good grappling from what I have seen and heard but think Volk showed against Islam and in other fights training with Craig Jones etc that he could have grappled with Ilia to tire him out and take away some of his ko power and we know Volk can push a high pace for five rounds and then I think he could have started to take over as the fight went on. I think Max would be a good fight with Ilia and also Movsar could be interesting if he could beat Brian Ortega which would also be a good fight. I think Ortega gets hit too much and Ilia is good enough to avoid getting taken down and subbed he’s a bad match up for Yair I still have hope for Arnold Allen and definitely think he could give Ilia a good fight and I think he should have won against Movsar

    Great breakdown! Had to subscribe. Im no boxing expert but watching that first round you could just see that ilia was making reads and testing the waters. It seemed like volk got cocky when he started landing jabs and from that point i knew it was over. Good to see you back and reenergized at that if I may say. Great breakdown even if this was pretty much selfexplanatory from Ilia. All the work his done and showed us throughout the years has come to fruition. After somewhat of a downfall (from various reasons) that Petr Yan had it is a blessing to have someone of Ilia's ilk to lead the way. He's super balanced in his approach in a way that more often then not his defence lays the foundation for everything that follows.He is very well conditioned on top of all and doesn't dissipate his energy. The biggest thing for me is that he isn't affraid to take a shot if needed just so he can lay a cannon right on your chin. He truly is the eye of the hurricane. All the best, BD. 300 is just around the corner.

Many people say his striking is even better than Volk. • @BrendanDormanMMA

    @BrendanDormanMMA

    Great question! And yes, I’d imagine a large grappler with top control like Islam would be a nightmare for him. Merab seems to be a stylistic possibility, but he’s much smaller and more orobe to get hit. Plus he doesn’t have that drowning top game that Islam has. Volk was good at scrambling, but he’s always been that way, and his gas tank used to be 1% ile ish. Also, it’s easier to control someone with longer limbs in the Eagles MMA system, as it’s very leg focused. When I watch Islams top game against leaner taller types it’s usually a matter of how he’ll drown them not if. If I were Javier I’d have him do a good amount of medium sparring with an excellent, trustworthy boxer about the same size, to keep his counters sharp. I do want to see him fight Max, but the Gaethje thing f’s that up a bit. So…haha Yeah, either that or a great kickboxer with unpredictable striking. I actually think O’Malley could cause problems, as coukd Umar N. Fascinating possibilities though.

I type these on the fly, there’s often typo’s etc. but it’s how I see things best thematically. I always have the option of a weekly show just shooting the shit, I just need to know there’s interest.
