Spring hip is definitely not the same as inner thigh, that's why there's a different name for it, and in classical Judo i.e. Japanese, the difference is stark. Done correctly it is the antithesis of uchimata, because it attacks the supporting leg on the other side of the body. The mechanics, though there is a grey area as you suggest, are wildly different when we compare text book versions. And in a practical sense ken ken uchimata for example is vastly different to hane goshi. for me questioning hane goshi is like questioning tomoe nage because sumi gaeshi exists. In my humble opinion.

Thank you so much. If I can add, Tsuri Goshi and Koshi Guruma are totally different too. The Gokyo was made for a reason and saying that such and such technique should be removed is just wrong , even if they look similar and/or are not popular in competition.

I guess distinguishing between uchi-mata and hane-goshi just by looking at which leg gets swept doesn't cut it indeed. Many Japanese top players do uchi-mata on the far leg in uchi-komi but then they attack the nearest leg in shiai. Hane-goshi is something more subtle than uchi-mata big lift and it really gets tricky for the majority of judokas to distinguish between a hip uchi-mata on the distant leg and hane-goshi.

3:47 position and discharge are clearly sukui-nage but it's the first time i see an application like that. Closest thing to it i can think is a seoi-nage grip switching with the leg behind uke. This variation is simply incredible 😳

I got a slipped disc last week in the gym, I think watching these has made it sympathetically worse. So much effort goes through the back.

Totally agree with you about changing the names of throws because they can fit into other throw names such as hane goshi. What about changing the name of throws for different reasons like yama arashi “mountain storm” because I think it also makes no sense😅

I wouldn't agree on tsuri goshi being too similar to koshi guruma. Koshi is a much rarer technique to see cause it's harder to pull off (without adding your leg into it to make it harai goshi...)

just cause its on your shoulders doesn't mean it's kata guruma. That's why what some people call drop kata guruma is actually yoko otoshi. (what Bouchard does for example). Kata guruma means your shoulders act as the fulcrum usually uke goes across your shoulders. In this throws case uke's on toris shoudlers but there's no guruma action, and the grips plus shoulder provide a sukui action.

I’d probably go even to the further extreme on the hip throws and categorize anything that isn’t harai, (Ippon) Seoi, and Sode as just… “koshi nage.” I know people like to nitpick to death throw categories, but Koshi Guruma, O Goshi, Utsuri Goshi, and even Hane Goshi to a degree are pretty much all the same thing with slight grip modifications. We might even throw Uki Goshi in there too although I think most people would see that as sacrilege given it was Kano’s favorite. Basically, I feel like these should really only be categorized when they are really distinct. If the only difference is a hand around the hip versus a hand around the neck versus a belt grip or not… it’s not really fundamentally a different throw. Would sort of be like if we called a belt grip O Soto versus a standard high collar grip O Soto two different things. Kind of pointlessly complicated in my opinion. I think the naming convention in English of “Grip” + “Throw” is enough differentiation. And they sort of already do that in Japanese for some stuff… just Seoi Nage is was usually gets thrown around, but occasionally people get more specific with Ippon Seoi. Same case with Tomoe and Yoko Tomoe.

I disagree. If the only difference is where you grip, you are right, we should name this the same. But there are differences in their principles on how the throw is executed as well. E.g. in Koshi Guruma, the focus is on the turning motion and the hip mostly blocks the opponent, whereas in O Goshi the lifting motion with your hip is the primary driver of the throw.
