    I studied Aikido at the Noe Valley SF Dojo of the greatest woman Judoka in history, Keiko Fukuda. I studied there for about a decade 1987-1996, I was studying for Shodan when I had to stop. I haven't been in a dojo in over 25 years but I still live an Aiki life.

    Personally, I would think perfect ippons would be throws that didn't require the use of sutemi. If you have to do sutemi to get a point, it's not perfect. I had a guy try drop seoi on me 3 times in randori and I told him the last time he tried it that perhaps he should work on kuzushi first before trying to throw me. Kuzushi, tsukuri, an kake.

  • @cerotidinon

    @cerotidinon

    2 жыл бұрын

    In competition you would always use sutemi since otherwise the other one gets a chance to turn to the side. However, basically none of these throws required sutemi. Most of them were perfectly timed.

  • @ronin2167

    @ronin2167

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@cerotidinon I don't believe you need sutemi to get an ippon. I think it's bad Judo to rely on sutemi. This is my opinion about the de-evolution of Judo. Same as needing to yank and use strength to pull off a throw. Today's Judo is crap.

  • @cerotidinon

    @cerotidinon

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@ronin2167 That's not the question. The question is: Does it ever hurt to go into sutemi after the throw? And the answer is in almost all cases no. In world class judo every small advantage is important, hence it's rational to do so. You don't want to be the one who did not get the gold medal because you didn't go to the ground and got only waza-ari instead of ippon.

  • @ronin2167

    @ronin2167

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@cerotidinon That wasn't the question at all, since I started the thread. As a matter of fact, there was no question. I was making a statement about whether sutemi waza should be considered a perfect ippon, and I argued that because you had to use sutemi to complete the throw that it indeed was not a perfect ippon. I don't believe you should practice sutemi as a normal way of throwing your uke. You use the term world class Judo and I say, no, it's not. The current accepted Judo practice is actually a devolution of Judo, not an advancement of. If you have to use sutemi and or yank and pull on your opponent to get ippon then I would suggest you go back to the basics of kuzushi and start over. Hence my example of the guy trying to do a drop seoi nage on me 3 times. He doesn't understand the concept of kuzushi because there was none and so I just stood there not being thrown.

    @@judospirit Thanks. By the way, some of the examples I gave could have been replaced by a Koga throw. Talk about efficiency!
