Top fuel, Nitro Thunder, Sydney Dragway - May 4th, 2019

Спорт

Two rounds remain in the 2018-19 400 Thunder Top Fuel Championship and four drivers remain in the closet championship battle the category has seen in many years. The might of Rapisarda Autospoort International and its drivers, Wayne Newby and Ashley Sanford, continue to challenge defending Australian champion, Kelly Bettes of Lamattina Top Fuel Racing. Throw into the mix Phil Read of Jim Read Racing and it’s set to be a real title fight as the 52nd Winternationals draws closer.

@@Ash_Dean should be, but I doubt it. Winternationals is one of the biggest events in Australian drag racing, so you would hope they would be there, but then again when the promoters say they are going to be there and they're not, well that shouldn't happen either. I wouldn't have gone if I knew they weren't going to show up, I went specifically to see them. That is why I am pissed about the no show.

Just as a matter of interest how much skill does one need to be a top fuel driver...would it be fair to say the other classes are more difficult where one must use a clutch and change gears...as i understand top fuel is a single gear and the clutch does all the trickery...does the driver just floor the throttle at the lights and the clutch does not let the wheels spin...or are the drivers using less throttle off the line and increasing throttle as they go down the line.

I do not drive one of these cars but have watched many events. In part you are right, if everything goes perfect there would be minimal skill other than reaction time. The big exception is when things don't go perfect and the driver needs to pedal the throttle and keep it straight. There is also the chance of stuff going VERY bad which is why they now race 1000ft and not 1/4 mile after Scott Kalitta being killed. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scott_Kalitta

It's all about trade-offs. I'd prefer them going the full 1/4mile but making every nhra drag strip they run on up to spec on safety equipment costs money. Money that somebody will have to pay but not all are willing to pay. If you don't want to shorten the length and you can't force every track to up safety measures, then you have to make the dragster slower which nobody is willing to do. Cheapest option is to shorten the racing length.

  • @calvinnguyen1364

There’s more skill involved than what you’re putting out there. If it’s right in the groove and everything is perfect, what you said applies. But if it’s get out of the groove, smokes the tires like you said, and probably other shit I’m not thinking of at the moment, the driver has to accommodate to those things as they happen in under 4 second. That’s skill
