Strange Cars at the Drag Strip

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Here is a video collection of some strange cars that I have seen over the years at the drag strip. I'm not making fun of any of these vehicles because I respect anyone that puts in the time to get a vehicle out to the track and race it. But sometimes you ask yourself "what were they thinking"? And of course the answer doesn't matter because obviously that is what the person is into and it is much better to have a variety of vehicles showing up at the track rather than everything the same.
Point in example is the first car that is the Gasser Pontiac Fiero, the owner of this car wanted to pass on his knowledge of fabrication onto his Grandkids and found a cheap platform of a vehicle to start hacking into. And once he was done it might not have been the fastest car at the track but for sure it was the most talked about vehicle there, and nobody would question that once this guy touched that Fiero he obviously made it better. Because I can guarantee you that if a regular Fiero pulled up to the line nobody would give it a second look at all.

I helped a young man from Detroit out at Onondaga Dragway where I work and race get his pinto figured out and flying. Turns out he had a setup similar to what I have in my 65 Comet. 289/C4 no brake. His is all motor tho and I have a 150 shot and race hard tire no prep. Anyways..Pinto rock..screw the haters..

People are shocked when it runs because it is all original in terms of body and no fiberglass and it still has the steal bumpers. A rear engine 80s VW rabbit pickup, using a turbo VR4, shorty glide & 9"; the driver was moved to the center and forward to make it work. Not a race, but one day about 20-25 years ago, I came up on a 60's Dodge panel van at the highway service drive light. Tubbed rear with huge drag tires, loud rumpeting engine. I gave a thumbs up and he nodded back. Light changed and he took off, exhaust blasting, WAAAAAA... No wheelie, no spinning of wheels. The sound of the engine disappeared as quick as the van down the street, it was really hauling tail. I wouldn't know the drag times or speed it would be capable of, but it was really moving away and getting smaller at a very rapid rate. Haven't seen it before that or since.

I can remember trucking in the early 80’s seeing Art Arfons have a couple semis for different things he was running different Mambas he had going south on 95 Then the bandag bandit and several carriers with different monstrosities that team had. Seems like all that’s gone now. The showmanship. Karl Casper and the big hotrod shows and designers gone.
