In Banished you need to make either a bunch of fishing or gathering in order to last the first five years, especially if you want the Mountain Man Achievement so that's why he's talking about fishing, especially since gathering ONLY works in a forested area.

The fishing dock is very small, unlike a trading post or a mine. You can place it on a diagonal segment because the middle tiles are not strict about whether they go on land or sea, almost anywhere along the trading river or the perimeter of a like. Those narrow land bridges are not good locations. You'll have difficulty fitting a barn there, or grow a town nearby that will consume the fish. I had a food crisis after I stopped expanding and my houses grew full of children. I set up fishing docks at regular intervals that look like the wave breakers. Surprisingly the trader still got through.

My fishing settlement is going quite well, and I have 80 people, 11 of which are fishermen. Good times on the smooth waters of Lake Placid.

My first seed was 111111111, Valley, Large... If you are looking for the 900 citizens, you should definitely look into this map... Best map I ever seen even in Top Map Videos/Reviews... I am still looking for a similar map to start over but I still didn't find it. Look at it and RATE MY COMMENT if you like it!

I never saw the appeal to fishing.. but then again my first time I used a small map.. one good fishing area. I would get like.. 20 fish per season with just one worker maybe even less. But I'm gonna try using a medium map and see how it goes. Thank you. :)

Fishing isn't as great as I make it out to be on this video, it was made quite recently after the game was released. I focused on it because its the most location dependant building in the game. Try to get as much of the working area coving water, build a storage barn as close as possible and remember your iron/steel tools! Stock it up with 4/4 workers and see how that works for you :)

Well with a medium map and a huge body of water I get tons of fish. It's my main trade. xD I have to constantly put fish in the trading post because I end up getting like 2.5k fish pretty fast and basically nothing else. :P So fishing can be good.

my fav-seed is 788345392 (big, harsh, hard) its very flat next to the spawnpoint.

aw man, I really wanted that tiny island one but the seed doesnt work anymore it looks like.

696969696 and 666404666 both large / valleys are great seeds. Lots of flat land, both river + lake next to spawn with good fishing locations.

You can generate good maps yourself. They come up like 1 in 8.

yeah i dont know why you were all excited about fishing docks, they are a good source of food at the start but you easily delete the fish and becomes a terrible source of food. also, People like me who like to make their city big, they need not so much as a big lake or body of water, but a big river because in every map, theres 1 main river and that 1 river will make excelent stops for trading docks because you need to trade to reach populations of thousands. Also its SUPER easy to find fishing and trading spots on rivers and lakes...

James Brewster I've said it before but i'll say it again. I made this video less than a week after the game was released. At that time the whole community was getting really excited by fishing docks. As we all played through the game it became obvious that they weren't as awesome as everybody first thought.

why do u want 5 fishing docks? are u crazy? large map 1 is enough..u want 5 on a medium map? give ur people various food... not just fish... best maps are no lake, one river...1 fishing spot.. lots of lots of flat land for forests, hunting areas, and farms, orchards...

dude fishing isn't worth shit, if u rely heavily on fishing docks thats kinda stupid, your people will die get hunting cabins and gathering huts first cause fishing is never good. every map u chose was based on fishing so no offense but they aren't really good seeds.

you should try fishing in good spots only... you can get like 450 food per fisherman (that's 1800 for four fishermen)

yes i understand but only relying on fish is aweful cause ur people will starve Variety Helps alot. i would say the first thing people should build first are hunter cabins with gathering huts next to eachother. the same huts or cabins need to be out of range of the other obviously. Then wood cutter and foresters along with houses and advance accordingly. Farm land is also essential.

Fishing isn't bad at all considering if you are making Ale, you need Fishing. 3-4 Docks placed in great locations with 4 fisherman each and 20 orchards of 2-3 types (15x4) along with taverns will allow you to buy anything for food you can't make yourself, and more than enough stone.
