Top 50 ZX Spectrum games of 1985 - in under 10 minutes

Ойындар

Hello and welcome to the fourth episode of TOP 50 games in under 10 minutes.
We go back to 1985 today to check what kind of games we played on our beloved ZX Spectrum back then and to see the games that we think are the top 50 games for ZX Spectrum in that year.
Looking back, the 1985 was a year that shown us what can be done with the little old "Speccy".
The graphics and animations in Robin of The Wood, Nodes of Yesod, Mikie and Way of The Exploding Fist were really first class. And we can't forget the 3d masterpiece that was Elite from Firebird Software. We also got some fantastic shooters that year, like Commando and Rambo.
Games are, as always, presented in no particular order.
Have fun and let us know in the comments if you agree with our choices (and if we missed a title that should be on the list), and see you in the next one!

I got a Spectrum for Xmas in 1985. I remember ripping off the wrapping paper and seeing the rainbow Spectrum logo and I was delirious. The graphics are amazing for their time and the games were so playable. The Spectrum changed my life as I am now a graphic designer. I was always blown away by the colour magenta - a colour you very rarely ever see in real life. Another notable thing is that it never had the colour orange, which I always thought was strange.

The ZX spectrum can only hold 8 colors total which was atypical compared to other pieces of hardware at the time, even the atari 2600 had a much bigger color pallete, at least it's better than just having a black and white color range.

Orange can be achieved on a ZX Spectrum 128 by placing yellow and red in the same place on two screen areas in memory and then switching quickly between them.

When I got my ZX Spectrum 48+ for Christmas I was over the moon with excitement. Little did I know the ZX Spectrum would shape my entire childhood, teenage years and get me into programming and P.C.'s. Cauldron and Saboteur were two games I loved playing. All the games though look brilliant!!

I got a ZX Spectrum 48k about 1985 and I was over the moon. My dad who had little money managed to surprise us with a 50 game cassette, wow it kept us going for years. Amazing how little dots on a screen made us think it was state of the art. He also got a cartridge called currah speech that worked with a selection of games, we had snooker and every now and again the spectrum would try to sound like a commentator lol Some of the games in your video have brought back some fantastic memories, commando, hypersports, dinamite dan, spy hunter. Just brilliant. We also had a game called fruit machine, that had me and my mate laughing our heads off trying to win the jackpot. Also, Bover Bear where you had to climb ladders and walk past a battery to drop it down to your car to make it to the next level, I remember getting all excited spending hours making it to level 3, being excited to see what the level was like only to accidentally pull the power cable out of the back of the spectrum while trying to get comfy, never seen that level to this day. Thanks for the video 😁👍

You know, I think it is likely that many of us have used a Spectrum emulator of some sort. They can easily be downloaded together with most games. But, what surprised me most that SOME of the best games we had on Spectrum in their concept and premise do stand the test of time as far as the playability. Of course today's graphics are incomparable to graphics back then but we can also see that fun gameplay transcends graphics. For example the various puzzle games work regardless of graphics. The same way chess remains fun (for the initiated) despite not having changed for almost 200 years. And not just puzzle games. For example I think Quazatron, Boulder Dash type of games. Probably most of the most successful games

What is great about these old games for such limited hardware is that people had imagination to come with even most absurd ideas for a game with really outlandish characters and could achieve something atmospheric and interesting. It's great that there are so many indie developers that still create games for these old platforms (and modern too) trying to revive that artistic trend in gaming. I'm not into modern games with super realistic graphics and sophisticated gameplay. I want to see what people can do with simple graphics and sound. It's fascinating.

6:12 - That's crazy that the developer really used up that whole bottom portion of the screen, just to constantly display the name of the game, company and developer. It's like a permanent credit screen on display, not at the end of the game, but throughout the entire playthrough. 😂

Did you see the ZX Spectrum Next? I own one (from second Kickstarter) and it's really a fantastic machine that I use a lot! Not exactly 48Gb, but it does have 1 or 2Mb of Ram with capabilities of 256 color graphics, hardware sprites, great sound, runs with 3.5, 7, 14 or 28Mhz, fully compatible with practically all Spectrum computers from the 80s (I used it a lot to play 48k/128k games)... It's really what Sinclair (or Amstrad) should have done in the late 80s in order to stay relevant and compete with Amigas and (later) VGA PCs. And no, I'm not sponsored by the guys who made it ;) It's just a great machine and if there is a another Kickstarter, I can't recommend it enough (I will get another one as backup for sure!) :)

@@retrononame TY. I thought it was a little later than 83 due to how well it played along with smoother animation & mutli-level map & game style - i did watch 81- through to 86, i must have blinked (for 15 seconds or more) :)

As I wrote in the video description - games are presented in no particular order (so the first game shown doesn't mean it's the best in 1985). It's just a list of 50 games that I think are top games released in 1985 on Speccy ;) Thanks for watching!

Fair play :) I just mentioned the description because, let's face it, the majority of YT users doesn't read them (I'm often guilty of that as well). Agree though. Saboteur was a great game and I have great memories "cursing bloody dogs" as a kid :)
