After a summer of experimenting with my Wilson Blade 98 V7 18 x 20, I’ve landed on Gamma Jet 18 black mains, Gosen OG Micros Sheep 17 black in the crosses. I’ve taken a long break from serious playing, and it was overwhelming to come back to all these new strings and technologies I had never seen before. I tried Gamma Jet 18 with a bunch of expensive-ish multifilaments like Vanquish and X-One Biphase, but the Gosen OGSM produced the most amount of snap-back, spin , and the crispest feel. I’d highly recommend this setup for anyone on a budget or otherwise. Tension maintenance is great as well. Best of luck on your channel!

I always like to see what others are using for their hybrid setups. I have not tried Jet 18, I am interested in learning more about how it holds tension, with a dense string pattern 18 x20 you can definitely go thin like 18/17 setup sounds perfect, with minimal string breakage. Gosen is a good pricepoint, I still like nxt for the multi... will have to try that with jet and see how it does. Stick with what works until it doesn't anymore, I like to say!

I’m a former professional player but in 1985, and I used to use only gut back then. Now 37 years later I’m hitting again! There are so many choices today but I have an issue with protecting my elbow. What would be a safer on my arm set up? I’ve thought of 16 gauge gut in mains at 52 pounds and a poly at 48 pounds 17 gauge in crosses. Does that seem right or what should I do? I play with a head prestige mid (2010 model) that’s 93 square inches and 18x20. I hit very hard and flat. I beat Agassi back in the day so you can imagine how I play. Thanks so much. I await any reply. 🏆

Thanks for the video coach. What's is the recommended tension combo for a hybrid setup? I just bought Solinco Tour Bite 1.20 & NRG2 1.32... I'm planning to have them on my Pure Aero 98 as TB on mains while NRG2 on crosses. Note: I usually play with full bed poly at 48 LB.

From the aspect of durability I think that is not a bad setup, since the black code may wear on the crosses due to its shape and the origin should hold its own. If you want even softer feel , more comfortable string I would put a multi or even prince duraflex 17 in the crosses but may be less durable. For a spin friendly setup that feels pretty firm the setup you described is good.

Due to arm issues, I’ve gone all out on softness and comfort. I am currently using a Wilson Clash 100L strung with Solinco X Natural 1.20 @ 46-48 lbs. I’m very keen to try the VS Touch + RPM Blast combo. What tension would you recommend? I am a weekend warrior, a 3.5 to 4.0 level at best. Thank you..!

I have read differing opinions on gut / poly hybrids and the string tension differential. If you put the natural gut in the MAINS and poly in the crosses, how much lower in tension would you recommend stringing the poly crosses for optimal performance and snap-back?

Do you have your favorites for poly cross strings with gut mains? What are some of your favorites. Most people don't want to spend $20. a set for Luxilon like the pros. I am looking for a poly cross that marines well with natural gut to give you maximum playability. Right now I am using Hyper-G 20 gauge poly. The Solinco Hyper-G 20 in my gut / poly hybrid was arrived at by trying every other string in the Solinco line in 18 or 20 gauge (if available). Prior to that, I play tested numerous slick smooth rounded polys (dozens) to see which ones performed best. My top five previously priced under $14. a set were (in order): 1) Yonex Pro Tour FIRE 1.20; 2) Weiss CANNON Silverstring 17; 3) Kirschbaum Pro Line EVO; 4) Mayami Hit Pro 1.25; and, 5) MSV Co-Focus 17L (1.18). Just ordered Tier One GHOSTWIRE and Grapplesnake Tour M8 (which I know you like a lot). What would you top three polys be for cross strings with gut?

I am assuming you are looking for extra spin with the cyclone, not sure what gauge you are using, tension seems fine, try a thinner rpm blast, for more feel maybe a softer poly in the x's like lux 4g soft or solinco hyper g in a 17 or 18. or even a multifilament string (but the cyclone may wear it out quicker.

@@RacketStringingTips Thank you so much for taking the time to reply to my question. The volkl cyclone tour is 16 gauge and my cross is Babolat RPM rough spin max 17 gauge. I've always been a spin player so i'm looking for a little extra spin and control as I get up there in my age (57). I play 4-5 times a week. I'll try the luxilon 4g next for my cross. I live in the Philippines so I have to get my equipment online as selection is very sparse here. thanks again.

Is a full bed of poly better than hybrid for snap back? Thanks

  • @RacketStringingTips

Depends, poly strung at a reasonable tension should create the effect of spin well. Once the strings start notching than you will quickly loose that effect. Be careful not to notch strings during stringing, I see too often stringing done too quickly, strings notching during stringing and taking away from the playability afterwards. If you are looking at trying a hybrid, you could also try a smooth multifilament or synthetic in the crosses, and a thin poly 18 or 19 g in the mains for a good spin as well.

Generally speaking The Main strings are responsible for durability and spin and the crosses for power and comfort. Put the softer of the two in the crosses. So I would think put the 4G soft in the crosses and the Element in the Mains. That being said due to your arm issues you may want to try the 4G in the mains (as your poly) and put a good multifilament in the crosses. This might be a good starting point and make adjustments accordingly. Let me know how it goes.

Thanks for sharing. I am a fan of Roger Federer, and I am now using Pro Staff 97 V13 (315g). Actually, I wish to mimic the setup of Federer (Lux Alu power and natural gut), but I found it is quite expensive for me. Additionally, after for example 2-3 hours using this racquet, my arm and shoulder will feel a little bit uncomfortable. I cannot say it's painful, but only a little bit different from what I feel by using other racquet. I am now using Wilson Sensation 17 with 53 pounds of main and 50 pounds of cross. As you talked in this video, is the combination of Alu power and NTX is similar with Federer's choice? If not, is there any other suggestion? I play the similar style with Roger, which means I do not wish to stay in baseline for long time, but I also wish my string setup is arm-friendly. I am looking forward to your recommendation. Thank you.

From my experience, Tecnifibre X-One Biphase provides the best feel and comfort out of any other multis I've tried. The playability is very close to natural gut but with less tension maintenance and durability. I strung mine at 52 lbs on the mains with Luxilon Alu Power Rough at 49 lbs on the crosses. I'm testing out exactly the 2nd recommended setup. They say natural gut holds tension really well, so I decided to pay twice as much hoping for this setup to last 2-3 times longer than my regular setup while getting better playability during this period.

all heavy and stiff racquets will do that to your arm. play more often and work on arm fitness and before you know it the racquet will feel light and great. i actually added a ton of lead tape to my rf 97 bc it felt light. I used to use fed's ncode 90 for almost 20 years until it cracked. i switched to most recent rf97 and it felt so light to me. but definitely keep playing with it and you'll become stronger

Thanks for sharing. So what is the difference between the Alu power and different multi’s hybrids you mentioned or are they more or less the same ? How much play is one likely to get with the last 3 combo’s you listed ? I read conflicting messages about hybrids, some claim you get more spin and better durability with the multi in the main and a round smooth poly in the cross, the other way around will result in notches/fraying of the multi in the cross resulting in a poly that can not move freely anymore. I have some packeges of Triax and Silverstring 1.20 that I could use for a hybrid. I like the feel of a full bed of Triax (55lbs) but I play better with a full bed of Silverstring (more control and spin)( 48lbs) although at net the Multi shines. A full poly bed is a bit jarring on the arm though. Will put them in a Radical MP 2021, any tips about which one to use as cross/main and tensions? I will try Alu power and a multi once I finish my current strings. Thanks!

Hi and thanks for the comment, there is a lot to unpack in your question but will try to touch on the key areas. So in my mind and I don't think I am alone in saying that the idea behind hybrid is to get the best of both strings right! sounds simple but you need to take into account your situation, racket, tension and strings being used and gauge. That being said, you mentioned full poly being jarring on the arm, than my first thought would be softening it up and give that a try, and the general idea is that main strings are responsible more for feel and spin but crosses can stiffen or soften a stringbed. So if you want more feel and less jarring on the arm you need to put the multi -triax in the main and the poly - silver string in the crosses, yes that may make it feel a bit stiffer, but give some control over the multi which can also be good. If you want to soften string bed but have durability than put the poly in the mains. In your case I would start with the first that I recommended. So on to the tension, multi can be tighter 2 to 4 lbs and the poly 2 to 4 lbs lighter. If you generally go with lets say 56 with one string, you may want to try 58 multi and 54 poly. 4 lb split should do it. Next you could play with the gauge of the string, go real thin with poly and if you are putting the multi in the mains than maybe stick with 16 or 17 if you don't break strings too often. If you go with poly in mains go 17 or 18 or even thinner and go to 17 multi since its in the crosses. With the poly in the mains you will get more 'snap back' spin potential than you will with having the multi in the mains. There are always benefits and limitations with each set-up so you just really need to find your primary reason and go with that... hope that helps. thanks for watching.

Thanks for the very elaborate and insightful reply! I will follow your advice and start with the Triax in the mains first. After that I will put the poly in the main unless the first option fulfills all my needs.

I have had good response out of gosen string, go thin on the alu power, and play around with tension some.. try to change one variable at a time so either try thiner alu power or try going tighter or loser by 5 lbs on the alu power. I like to change just one variable that way if I like it I know what to change next time, changing too many things at once creates confusion, sounds simple but you'd be surprised how many times this gets overlooked. :)

  • @RacketStringingTips

    @RacketStringingTips

    2 жыл бұрын

Adam, here are a few recommendations based on information you provided, not knowing your string wear / breakage situation or current tension. Three factors I am considering in this recommendation :low power (increase tension), spin (thinner, shaped string), and easy on arm (softer string). 1# Let's hybrid this 16/19 dense pattern racket with a thin poly mains and premium multi in the crosses. Try Solinco Hyper G SOFT 17 g. (its the soft version and 1.24mm) and is shaped for spin in Mains. In the cross strings I would stick with a premium multifilament NXT 17 g which is also 1.24mm. Cost for this set up should be around 17 for one frame. Another option would be substitute the NXT out for Tecnifibre NRG2 17 g (it's a few dollars less than NXT). The mid range tension for this stick is about 53 lbs so I would say string the mains at 52 and the crosses at 56. If you already have a tension you like than stay with that and try this setup. Let me know what you think. IF you break strings frequently than maybe go 16g for the Solinco.

Thanks, will look into that. Again with a 18 x 20 pattern lots of options on going thin. Have you tried a 18 / 17 combination? be interested to see how that performs compared to your 17/16 set up. I guess I always try thinner strings but that being said they don't always perform better than their thicker counterpart, but most of the times I think they will. Tecnifibre offers some good choices, I have had good luck with biphase and NRG2

@@RacketStringingTips Thanks for the suggestion. This might be a bridge too far for me, as I am a string breaker, and it's one of the reasons I went 18x20. I was breaking a 4G Soft 16L in 7 hours in my Angell TC95 16x19, and the hybrid I mentioned lasts me 12 hours in the TC95 18x20. I am also a bit concerned that going 18 in Ice Code, which is powerful for a poly, might give the string bed too much spring and make it detrimental to control. I agree that Tecnifibre has a great line of strings.

sorry for slow reply, trying to get back to everyone. 16 x19 string pattern allows you for some thinner tensions I think. try a multi in the mains such as wilson nxt 16g and lux 4g soft in the crosses 17g or another softer poly. maybe 54 in mains and 52 in crosses. Idea is to get a softer feel in the mains and stiffer in the crosses, if the multi breaks to quick go with a 18 g soft poly solinco hyper g, lux 4g soft. I can give you more as well
