As a home made stringer I’ve tried a lot of combinations, poly, poly/poly, poly/multi, multi with different strings new and old, and i absolutely love hybrid with white(beige) duramix tecnifibre. No matter cross or mains, this string give me a bit more power and the tension maintenance is wow. I am not stringbreaker, so durability is right. I use it with tour sniper, ptp yellow, black code, hyper g soft and it works great, even at low tension.

Do you prefer to use Duramix on mains or cross? What tension do you use?

Yeah Beckett, i like nylon mains and round poly cross for all the reasons you mentioned and i have accepted and come to terms with the negatives.

The pros use a freshly-strung racket for 90 minutes or less, and usually only about 45 minutes. That means a totally differently approach to strings than a rec player has. The pros won't experience much notching or deadening in that short a time, even as hard as they hit. In contrast, rec players need to consider durability and tension maintenance in a big way. Since I care about both tension maintenance and moderately stiffness, I find that a hybrid with a good multi or syngut is a must. My usual setup in my main rackets, Solinco Whiteout 305 16x19, are Head Lynx Tour 17 + Head Velocity MLT 16 crosses, either at 50+45 lbs for more power and spin, or 55+50 lbs for more control. (sometimes I use 4G Soft instead of the HLT.) I also have a Solinco Whiteout 305 18x20, and in that I use Gamma Syngut Wearguard 16 + Head Hawk 18, 50+45 lbs (I sometimes use Solinco Outlast instead of Head Hawk.) I used the same combo back when I played with Head Gravity Pro 18x20. Occasionally I will switch the Gamma Syngut for Babolat VS Gut, but the slightly increased playability isn't worth the cost at my level of tennis (high 4.0, low 4.5). I've settled on these after long experiments. They give a good combination of spin, power, touch, and control, and they last about 10 hours before the softer string breaks. For the ones with the HLT in the mains, I can restring the crosses once before needing to replace the whole bed, which is pretty convenient. I've tried all the major polys over time, and see the pros and cons of most. To me, full poly beds don't have sufficient power and touch and all the ones that I like--which are the softer ones--will either lose tension too fast or notch too quickly and lock up. Multi or syngut full beds don't have enough control and break too quickly. In contrast, these hybrids work well and last long enough, and when the cross is a multi, it does not notch the poly mains, so the stringbed stays slippery and lively. If I were going for something that lasts forever, I would use a 4G full bed (amazing durability, tension maintenance, and control, but too stiff for me) or Wilson Revolve (amazing spin and durability but terrible tension maintenance and too soft for me). I usually put Revolve in my kids' rackets for that reason. For whatever reason, I do not find that these two strings do well in hybrids. All this may be just personal preference but I offer it for whatever it's worth.

@@ishannage248 I won't pretend to know best, out of all the options out there, but one of the best feeling non-durable combos is Wilson NXT (multi) with Alu Power Rough. Put the NXT in the mains for more power and feel, or the Alu Power Rough in the mains for more control. It's almost as good as gut+Alu Power Rough, which was Federer's choice and at one time was Djokovic's and Murray's too. But the NXT breaks for me within 4-5 hours at most, and the Alu Power Rough goes dead fast.

Ive always been a fan of syngut cross/shape poly main. It allows me to string a higher tension while maintaining comfort. You get more feel without having to use a soft poly.

I'm always surprised people argue half a set of gut is too expensive. Where I live, court bookings are $35/hr and lots of people who play 4+ singles matches per week say that a $25 half set (i.e. $15 more than a poly half set) of gut is too much. These are the same people who buy 3+ new frames a year.

I’d rather play 1 more time per month than string with gut I think but in general, I agree. The new coated guts like VS last quite long and play objectively better.

Price. I went into the test expecting the more expensive string to be a rip off, but it felt a lot better to me. More obviously comfortable, better spin, no loss in control. Tbf it wasn’t a perfect test since we didn’t use the same poly.

I love the Tecnifibre X-One Biphase in the mains and the Alu Power Rough in the crosses, its feels like gut/alu power rough, not far away. Fantastic Budget Hybrid Setup

@ If you play with spin, expect to be breaking strings quickly. For me, the X-one in mains with poly cross lasts about 2 hours of hitting, and the other way around it is closer to 12 hours. Of course, time will vary based on playing style, racquet, and how hard you swing. The X-One in the mains does, however feel better to me, and I can get more action on the ball.

I don't think i ever commented on your channel even if I have watched most of your videos. I am a recreational player and i started playing with poly from the beginning. Notching was a problem and my swing speed wasn't enough for the snapback. I saw a video of yours recommending hybrid for my lvl. I felt in love and i thank you for it. Currently using 4g mains head velocity mlt crosses both around 48-50lbs. Maybe i am gonna try that too. I wish i had access to all these strings but i live on a small island of Greece without a stringer (i string my own rackets but i am not a professional). Ty for all the content. Sorry for my English. It's not my native language.

Thanks for watching! It’s an honour to read your comment. 4G is a pretty excellent choice because it should hold tension pretty well giving you good playability over time. I’m trying to think of a mainstream poly that blends great tension maintenance and snapback but they are pretty hard to find. Probably Tecnifibre ice code would be my first thought but that might not be accessible either.

I know you had issues w/ notching, but Firewire Boost is my hybrid. Great spin/tension maintenance. I have tried using X-1 biphase/Ghostwire also. I can play w/ both, but surprisingly my serves especially my kick and slice are much harder to return w/ the poly/poly (according to the returners). As for feel, I've been able to adjust to new strings to get a sense of where the ball is going w/ volleys, launch angle, drop shots, dink lobs etc. I've never met a good feel or bad feel string; just need time to adjust.

I did quite enjoy FWB for the first 45mins or so. Similar playing time to a nylon hybrid and I probably play better with FWB anyway.

As someone suffering from tennis elbow, hybrids are mandatory.

My favorite nylon for hybrids is Head Velocity MLT in black. The PA resin multis are much more durable than PU bonded strings. So, they work in the crosses better when using shaped poly mains. Lynx Tour/MLT is my go-to hybrid. But, I switch to Head Hawk 18 crosses with gut or MLT mains for some frames.

hey tenncom, i remember a bit ago you tried the vapor 11 and pro 2 and they were dissapointments. although i liked them and settled on the vp2 becuase it was overall better for my aggressive fast pace baseliner style, i always thought the best thing in a nike shoe, or the think i would do to a nike shoe was having a zoom air unit in the heal and the forefoot and a shank in the middle to connect to 2, or putting in some of the zoom x foam used in running shoes. little did i know this became a reality, so i wanted to ask if you could make a review on the nike gp challenge 1, and although there is not a zoom unit in the forefoot in the gp challenge pro model which is the cheaper option of the gp challenge 1, it would be useful information for a possible buy, sorry for the long text but wanted to tell ask for in depth review, thanks!

thanks for asking! I may do that in the future but right now I'm working on my Coco CG1 review. Carbon fibre shank and the cushioning is very springy, much the the Zoom X I have in my running shoes.

Is Wasabi-X a good cross string for natural gut? Also, would a natural gut mains with Wasabi-X in the crosses be able to generate great spin (not necessarily the most spin such as from shaped polys)?

I think it would be excellent. My only experience with gut was with TF Red Code Wax which feels less slippery to me than Wasabi X and spin was better than the hybrid I tried here. I think in general gut has the 2nd highest spin potential after poly

Gonna try the Toroline.

The best hybrid I've played was the Ashaway Kevlar & Zyex (Crossfire ZX, with high differential as discussed in talk tennis tw), used it for a couple of years. It was better than poly only, but more complicated to string.

Would like to add more tennis back to my routine, my current racquet has a full bed of Poly - Prince Tour XP 17 - which is nice. I've also tried a handful of other full beds of Poly's. I read that Ashaway Monogut ZX is a killer string to have as a main string, and pair it with your Poly of choice for the Crosses. I bought a couple of packs of it, once my current stringbed goes dead I am going to try this Hybrid out with ALU, Tour Bite or Zero Crosses 😁

please report back! I remember reading about this when some dorks on TW forums were using it with Kevlar but I've hardy seen anything about it since.

I used to love nylon strings, especially Tecnifibre X-One Biphase (I still miss its forgiveness). However, after playing with it for about 10 hours, it got badly fluffy. Therefore, in the long term, I think natural gut, which is more durable, would be the best choice as a main string for intermediate or advanced players. But that's just my opinion! Thanks for the informative video!

Is a round poly like Solinco Outlast in the crosses and it will last longer.

@@Yo_keebs I'm unsure. PP is so weird and I'm really unsure how its performance would change if you gave it a slippery soft string so it could start snapping back. I heard Razor Soft isn't actually that soft, maybe like Isospeed cream would give you a more pronouced effect?

I started using a Kevlar/sg hybrid around 30 years ago because I broke strings almost weekly. I still use it in some of my racquets. In other racquets I use a Poly/MFT hybrid, mostly Solinco Confidential with Head Velocity.

I watched your other video where you mentioned hybriding and decided to give it a try. I have the Solinco whiteout 18x20, and my first time I strung it it with toroline toro toro mains and Enzo crosses, and I did not like it at all. Felt super boardey to me. Then I tried toroline ether mains and head velocity mlt crosses and it felt sooo good. Great spin and power, good comfort and pretty good durability.

What tension are you at? I've found the WO gets pretty boardy over 52lbs with a lot of setups. I'm at 49/46lbs for polys, Toro Toro/Enso plays a lot softer down there for me, but I'm also used to stiffer polys on the whole

I think the full toroline setup was at 48lbs. Tbf I did that string setup because Toroline added that pair for me for free, so it just happened to be my first string ever string setup for my whiteout. Also I honestly haven't tried a lot of different full poly setups, as I just started exploring different tennis string setups after a long break from tennis, so maybe I'm still not used to the general feel of a full poly setup, which is another reason I decided to try hybrid setups. My polymulti hybrid I strung pretty low at 45lbs, so maybe I will raise it to 48 the next time i string it up . I also have a auxetic Head Radical MP that I was really enjoying with toroline ether mains and wasabix crosses, but after trying the Whiteout with the poly-multi hybrid I have almost exclusively been using my whiteout. Thanks for the reply btw, I've been binge watching almost all your videos and resources for a while now! I'm going to start messing around with adjusting the balance and weight of my WO. I think my current balance is about 33cm, so I'm hoping to make it more head light with the buttcap modules. @@TennCom

Does anyone know if Mantis tennis is still making racquets in the UK? They had their heyday from 2011-2016. I've heard the Mantis Tour 305, 295 PS III, and 285 PS III are decent racquets. Understand they are low power and control oriented sticks.

Curious about your "better depth control" comment. I grew up playing with poly (way before I should have, I didn't know better), and every time I've tried a multi/poly hybrid it felt like I was playing with a cannon, which I couldn't even control that power with better spin. Was the depth control particular to X-Natural, or do I just adjust to elastic strings really poorly?

Good question. It's harder to explain this than I thought when I said it in the video. When I use these hybrids, my balls are way flatter. Usually, I control my depth and placement by spin application. When I hit flatter, I have to rely gravity to bring the ball down. With nylon, I found that my inputs in terms of swingspeed and angle would yield a more consistent depth. So I could apply X swingspeed, Y swing angle and get a predictable Z depth, whereas with poly the Z depth was less predictable because of the variable amount of spin apply depending on how clean my contact was. I fear I'm not explaining this well and I need sometime to think about what I mean which I'll discuss in a future video.

Would you say you noticed any difference in spin between nylon mains and nylon crosses?

Yes. I think for the first 5 minutes or so, the poly mains had more spin, but it didn't take many shots with wet balls on a dirty court to increase the friction in the stringbed and lockup the strings, stopping snapback and reducing spin. After that, the nylon mains had more spin.

I tried on cx200 Vanquish mains/ Tourna silver 7 tour cross is way better than Tourna (mains)/ vanquish (cross) Gonna try vanquish/ice code, what do you think?

I haven't tried Vanquish or Ice Code. Seems like Ice Code is an S-Tier cross though (at least from what my DM's say)

I've used gut, multi and sin-gut in the mains with a smooth poly cross for the last 15 years. Natural gut mains with a stiff poly cross is my favorite but it's just too expensive. I use TF NRG2 16G mains at 52 bus with Kirschbaum Max Power 17G (125mm) crosses at 48 lbs. I haven't noticed a big drop in spin and this is a lot better for comfort, power and feel. It especially volleys better. This plays very well for the first 8-10 hours and then the poly has stretched and the multi is frayed and notched. I still use it for practice for another 10-12 hours before I restring. I play league matches with a racket with less than 8 hours of play on it. I have my own stringer and can restring when needed. Unless you are a young baseline spin master, I think hybrids are the way to go. I somewhat disagree this setup is less durable because an all poly setup is usually good for about 5-10 hours and I get at least that much of high quality play from my multi/poly hybrids. I've also used mono syn gut mains with poly crosses and it is good too but not the same feel.

Great work Beckett and Simon. S-class KZreadrs. I’ve enjoyed k-pop and also the musetti poly-poly hybrid (Lynx tour and something else). The main thing for me is confidence in that my stroke will produce the desired result. I’ve been enjoying playing with dead Luxilon 4G in my Wilson blade v7 18x20 …. It has reached a nice steady state and it is predictable.

I can’t break poly, so I always come back and dabble with a hybrid. I don’t really care for the multi in the cross. The poly mains seem to get “locked in” and in bed itself into the softer cross. Multi main or gut seems to work well, tensioned 2-4 lbs more than poly cross. I found I preferred the expensive multis (Rexis) over the cheaper multi (velocity mlt), so I’m back with a full bed of poly. I figure the playability and tension will last about as long as a multi/poly hybrid would break (1-2 weeks for me)

0:15 - there is an error. Roger Federer also was using a hybrid (Natural Gut with Luxilon Alu Power Rough).

When I was in high school, I got sick of breaking strings, so my stringer suggested Kevlar in the mains and synthetic gut in the crosses. It hit like a board since it was also high tension, but still didn’t last long because gut broke haha still fond memories though

IMO Syn gut is so much better than multi. I’ve been using Gosen og sheep micro in the mains and Signum Pro Poly Plasma in the crosses.

I actually like synthetic gut but I break it too fast. A really good string for full bed OR blend with poly is Klipper Zyex mono gut 17 g it feels like gut but not as costly…it’s not cheap though. Good stuff! Ashaway makes it too!

I do hybrid but it's a poly/poly hybrid. That should count, right?

I use natural gut mains and 4G crosses. On first glance one may think that this is an insanely expensive combination; however, because of the fantastic tension maintenance of both strings you’re changing less often, so financially it’s a wash when compared to initially cheaper alternatives. Also, the feel, comfort, and power are fantastic. Unless you’re a string breaker, I see no downside.

I was originally going to present data for the Top 20 but it was pretty tedious finding photos and reading through forums on each player. I imagine that the lower average ranking a player has, the less likely they are to be using gut.

I have used a natural gut/soft poly hybrid for years. I am a 4.5 mature male player. I have tried gut in the mains as well as crosses but ended up with natural gut in the crosses as the durability was simply better. With natural gut in the mains the natural gut will be "cut" by the harder poly and would limit my string life to about half that could be expected with gut in the crosses but this really depends on which poly you are using. When putting soft polys in the main some will stretch so quickly that durability is lost and you will cut out the string long before it breaks simply because you cannot stand the lost tension as balls power their way off the court. Playability and spin is slightly different depending where you place the gut in your hybrid setup. I also found you can drop down a size in the main if you are seeking maximum spin but at the expense of longevity. The difference between 18 gauge vs 17 gauge poly in the mains was more of a difference than comparing 17 gauge natural gut to 17 gauge poly in the mains from my experience. At the end of the day, it takes time when using a hybrid setup to find the setup that works best for each person. The hybrid setup, if coupled with the appropriate string can be more durable. I get 2-4 hrs from a full bed of multifilament or synthetic gut and double that with a soft poly before strings break. The harder polys thrashed my arm which lead to using a full bed of gut. Too much power for me. The hybrid setup with gut had enough forgiveness to keep my arm happy and lasts about as long as a full bed of soft poly. Sometimes longer but usually pretty similar. In the long run, stringing your own racquets makes a bigger difference in cost than which string you use plus you do not have to deal with the inconvenience of delivering and picking up racquets. I started with an Alpha Pioneer DC pendulum for the first couple years. It paid for itself within 2 years. I later added the Wise 2086 string tensioner and bolted the stringer to the top of an old dresser with casters giving me a mobile stringer with storage that is easily moved into a closet. I have used this set-up for the last 12 years and the cost of strings is not really a factor. Plus I never worry about my string tension leading into a tournament as I can change it without notice.

I just bought my own stringer so i can cut down on the costs of stringing with gut. Ive found so far the playability lifespan with gut in mains is about the same as some of the full bed polys i have used. 4-6 hours of good feel and snapback. I normally cut poly at 10 hours as theyre dead and about to break being notched. Havent really noticed a loss of spin on ground strokes with gut but the gains in serve speed and ground strokes is very noticeable. Also defensive shots have a lot more pace and volleys are plush. Slice backhands are really crisp with gut. As long as i stock up on gut packs when theyre on sale it will work out well for me. I like the feel paired with lynx touch a lot

I’ve just strung my Extreme Tour with Velocity MLT in the mains and Wasabi X in the crosses. 46 pounds all round, trying it tomorrow hoping for a soft controlled feel…Wasabi X has got to be the worst string to string with that I’ve tried so far😂I thought Confidential was difficult 😅😅

What are the string gauges .. I tried ng 17 , poly 18 and the string broke without hitting a single ball

If you dont break poly within 3 hours then you should look to gut mains in a hybrid. Im not a spin monster and usually cut out a full bed of poly after 10 hours because theyre loose and dont snap back anymore. Trying wilson gut mains hybrid and currently at 4.5 hours of solid singles practice and they're holding up well. Hopefully get to 6 hours of plush hitting with easier power and deadly slice backhands

I train with a guy who used to play itf juniors. When he had a pure aero he would break alu power 1.25 in 2 hours. He switched to pure strikes and now gets 3 hours out of them. He tried gut a few times and would last around 1 hour Max. He hits very heavy though.

Had a half set each of VS and NXT lying around for 12 years. Strung the ProStaff the other day and...WOW!

One thing I dont like with a hybrid is when the softer cross starts going and I lose spin and control. With a full bed, I feel like the changes and drops are more consistent and I can adjust better.

Using poly cross with nylon mains helps this quite a bit. You don’t get as much stringbed locking.

Matching strings to racquet colour is critical to becoming 5.0+ IMO. That's something that legitimately annoys me about the Whiteout. Everything looks fine but nothing with amazing.

Agreed, at a low (43-44 mains, 45-46 crosses) tension, which makes it comfortable; still plenty of control. What tensions are you using?

@TennCom it seems to give me a little better sense of pocketing and dwell in the strings. RZ already feels plush, WX in crosses ups that feeling. Also the sound is more inviting to me. More "paaahhhh" instead of "peeeeng".... if that makes sense.

Practically no one knows how to hybrid. YES! we need more intel on stings!

When i went to my first UTR touranment, I saw everyone using the g string

In my experience, I found Solinco Confidential bad for a hybrid setup. I tried it with Velocity MLT, Poly Tour Fire and RPM Power.

I don't know if you can call my strings a hybrid: Restring Zero 1.28 in the mains and Restring Zero 1.23 in the crosses. I hate different tension maintainance, that's the very reason why I was so disappointed 35 years ago, when I tried to combine two different strings. Worked for a short time, but then the poly crosses lost their tension (multi mains) and ruined the whole string bed. And what sets pros apart from us mere mortals is not only the price for a string job, they use it only for 9 games. I would get mad if I had to bring 4 or more freshly strung racquets to the court for every match. Pros don't care how long the strings last, I do. And today, my Zero "hybrid" is borderline too powerful, adding anything more elastic would make my racquet unplayable for me.

yeah I've found myself increasing Zero's tension by about 10% compared to most other polys

Velocity mlt natural 1.30mm or yellow prince syngut duraflex 1.30mm. in the MAINS at 52pounds........1.25mm isospeed cream or msv swift white as a cross 45 ponds MAX.... I AM HYBRID KING that tried hundreds and for you 2 canucks this would be best AYYYY

Paradox Pro has a lot of potential for hybriding, I agree, however, I'm afraid to use it after it aggravated my arm the last 3 times I tried it.

I've never really been a huge fan of hybrid stringing, I always thought using 2 different strings could lead to inconsistencies. Predictability is best with full poly.

I just can't get that pocketing feel with a hybrid it seems

Im honestly so annoyed by people nagging on cost of natural gut..... Like seriously, how long are you planning on keeping your 25$ string in? Over a month? I don't think so, because there is no string in existence that can stay in frame for over a month. Natural gut? Hit it till it breaks, will you brake it in month? Depending on you i guess.

Does this mean I need to buy _two_ sets of strings every 2-3 weeks instead of one set? 🤪

Why is power always a pro? I need less power lol. If I miss, I'm missing long, everytime. I have to use the thinnest beam, most underpowered racket I can find with high tension to keep balls on the court.
