    I really liked a dead-boardy feel that comes from a polyester string in my Head Speed Pro. Had that sucker up to 55lbs on a full bed. Then I started to get shoulder issues and had to abandon the full poly setup. So I'm in a hybrid setup using Babolat VS+RPM. The gut is on the mains at 65lb and RPM Blast in the crosses at 58lbs. There was a very slight transition going to gut but overall the transition was smooth given how plush gut feels. I'm also stringing my racquets less frequently because the gut is good until it breaks.

    Great advice as always Beckett! I found that changing from 1.25mm to 1.30mm had quite and impact on the balance of one of my rackets. Surprisingly it felt more powerful, although I believe that thicker strings are supposed to give you less! It might be because my balance point is quite towards the middle of the racket (toward the top of the throat). Keep up the great content bro. I always learn something from your videos.

    Great channel. I'm a high level player with low levels of material understanding, at least when it comes to strings. I was wondering if shaped polys(like Tourna BHS7T) has higher string to string friction than a round poly. If so, isn't shaped polys kind of counter productive spin wise, since it creates more spin on the ball thanks to its shape, but at the same time creates less spin due to higher string to string friction(lower snap-back effect)? Anyway, keep up the good work. Loved your GOAT strings episode with the history of polys and how Luxilon revolutionized the market. 👌

  • @TennCom

    @TennCom

    Жыл бұрын

    Thanks! Not all shaped polys have higher string on string friction. For example, Ultra Cable, has a pretty low coefficient of string on string friction. It seems that the actual shape has less of an impact on string-string friction than the material blend and addition of coatings. I think there's also might be such a thing as too much snapback. I don't have any hard evidence for this, but I sometimes struggle to control high snapback strings like ReString Zero when compared to low snapback strings.

    Great video! I'm a 39 yr old 3.0, and haven't played at all in about 24 years. I just took a few lessons and have hit on a ball machine a few times, but I'm looking to get into USTA tournaments and such this fall. I ordered a Head Speed Pro, Head Radical MP, and Babolat Pure Strike to demo but have not received them yet. I'm fairly strong and athletic and in shape and can generate my own power, I am 6'3" with a long reach and long swing motion. My current racquet and strings are both nearly 25 years old at this point, and I find that I am launching balls well past the baseline, even swinging at 50% power. Both Head racquets I ordered are 16x19 and the Babolat is 18x20. I am looking for help with control mostly. I can generate power and I don't use a ton of spin. Based on your video, a higher tension to reduce the launch angle and send the balls less deep seems logical for me. Assuming I choose one of those 3 racquets that I demo, what would you suggest for strings? Do you also have thoughts on the 16x19 or 18x20 based on my skill level?

  • @TennCom

    @TennCom

    10 ай бұрын

    Since you can generate a lot of your own power I think a hybrid setup would work great. A nice round poly in the mains (Hawk Touch or Polytour Pro) and a nylon on the crosses for extra forgiveness outside the sweetspot. Head Velocity is one of my favourites, but something cheaper like Head PPS or any other Syngut would work great too.

    Love your content. I bought a 360+ extreme tour (so you are the expert). I am a 4.0 in my forties. I usually play with a PS97 v13 with head lynx (yellow) at 23 kg which I found underpowered so I bumped up the racket to 345 grams strung and now it is a bit heavy for me. I have also played with an older pure aero (2015 I think) at 25 kg also head lynx - that one tends to launch on me - but it sure has more power. Any ideas for strings for the ET? And if you have the time then maybe also the PS and the aero?

  • @TennCom

    @TennCom

    My favourite strings on the ET are Tour Sniper, Confidential, Silver 7 Tour. None of these will launch on you and you'll retain great control. Spin will be better than normal Lynx, but power will be down. If prefer round strings, I've really enjoyed the new Hawk Power. I think it holds tension a bit better than Lynx and feels more connected.

    Hi, great video! I'm a 5.0 player. Been using the Wilson pro staff 97 with Tecnifibre black code at 23 kg. I recently needed to change racket to give my game more easy depth and spin when playing better players. I'm more of a player with linear strokes (chest the ball more than using snap from my wrist). I'm now trying to put more spinn and height in my game and changing some small things to get more access to top spin. With my new racket I like to play heavy from the baseline with a variety of spin but need the ability to flatten out some shots. When playing with the new racket I'm able to push my opponents back easier and play more aggressive than before. I'm lacking a little bit of my directional control compared to Wilson and find it more difficult to flatten out my shots but I think that's something I can get used to. Okey so to my questions: It's challenging to find the right string setup for my new racket. I just bought the Pure aero 98 and strung one with: 1st racket Head Lynx Tour 1.25/17 String Set Black @ 21 kg and the 2nd racket Weiss CANNON Ultra Cable 17 Black (1.23) String @ 21. Can't believe how different they play! The Ultra Cable is way thicker (shouldn't be) and makes the racket more heavy. It also feel like the Ultra Cable is string tighter compared to Head. The difference is at least 1-2 kg on the same tension. I am used to play with Tecnifibre Black Code but wanted to try out new strings to see if there is something better for this new racket. When I demoed the racket it had Hurricane at 24 kg and I didn't like it. Too harsh on my arm. I played great but didn't like the stiff sensation. I feel like both the Cannon and the head gives me a lot of spinn but for different reasons. Cannon is really grabbing the ball with it's shape but is stiffer and thicker compared to Head which have more snap due to "lower tension". I like the Cannon more cause it gives me a little bit more feedback from the stringbed (don't know if thats cause it's a stiffer string?) I will also soon test the Aero with my normal string (like you sad in the video, did it backwards, haha). Do you have any tips for me and my new aero 98? Strings, tension etc. Want easy access to spin and need some durability. Usually like medium to firm response, I think (don't know what black code is listed as, but I now I don't like the poly tour) but maybe a softer string will counter the stiff beam? I'm open for trying anything. Which setup would you prefer if it was you playing with this racket?

  • @TennCom

    @TennCom

    Жыл бұрын

    In the PA98, I would personally probably use Tour Sniper. That's the string is used to test the VS version and I didn't feel like I needed to make any adjustments. When it comes to string gauge, the 1.25mm (or 1.23mm for Ultra Cable) is the diameter of the string. So since Ultra Cable (UC) has a square cross section, it contains more volume than other shapes. So that's what that's about. If you like the square strings' ball bite, I think you should try Grapplesnake Game Changer and Tier 1 Firewire Boost just so see what other options there are. If you want to try something more normal, I would also check out Solinco Confidential.

No idea what tension but it looked like there was a lot of string movement and I begun to get notches after using it for 2 sessions. I like the power of my shots with it but the launch angle seems kinda high. I’m in my late 20s with no arm issues and my last racquet was a Dunlop aerogel 200 tour usually strung with a shape poly or poly/synthetic gut hybrid around 52. Kinda want a string with the potential to hit nasty winners. I would say I’m a 4.0 baseliner

    Hey just seeing this comment now, I think ALU Power now goes in a 130 gauge which should definitely help you get more durability. Luxilon 4G is also more resistant to breaking at the same gauge as ALU. 10-15 hours is pretty decent in my books, so maybe it will end up being better to find a cheaper alternative. At your level, its better to make these kinds of adjustments with your game rather than your equipment. Beginners often improve so fast and changing your gear interrupts this improving, forcing you to adjust to the new equipment rather than learn more about how your can adjust the depth/spin yourself. So I would just use any 16 syngut at 52lbs or so.

I'm 40yo and 200lbs, and bought a Head Gravity MP after several other demos because I like the control it offered. My shop strung it with Wilson Sensation Plus 16ga and RPM Blast 18ga at 52lbs because I literally had no idea what I wanted. I'm now 90 days into that setup, and it's either getting worn out or I'm just adapting my play and not overswinging as much, because it feels really dead and I'm having to really hammer the ball to get depth, wearing out my shoulder. I'd like more access to topspin, a little more pop and shape to the shot, and for sure some more comfort, though it isn't bad. Love to hear your or anyone's suggestions as I work to improve my game.

Switching from an 18x20-pattern to a more powerful and spin/power-friendly racket is what I need right now because I have always been an agressive, heavy (topspin, sometimes flat) player, and the Head Speed Pro while precise never allowed me to shine at what I am best I suppose. Been playing with a Head Radical MP that got restrung with Solinco Hyper G, 16 gauge, 52 lbs, around the time I started feeling more comfortable with my game and stuck to it. Strongest part of my game is my forehand ground strokes which I'm more or less able to hit deep with decent topspin. A pro suggested a few changes to how my racket is strung like going up on the tension as he said I didn't need help with power but it should help me get more control. Just before seeing your video I restrung with Luxilon ALU Power Rough, 16 gauge, 54 lbs. Any thoughts?

Spin level is good. What should i do string wise? I like tour bite in 1.2mm and lynx tour 1.25 in the pro staff but not sure where to go with the prestige. Its my first 18x20 racquet as well.

    Hello! I am an intermediate player who recently switched from the Head Extreme MP to the Yonex VCore 98 strictly for the plush feel. However, having strung it with the Yonex Poly Tour Pro at 23kg, I often lack length on my baseline shots and my serves ar quite slower than before. I like the feel the VCore 98 gives me and I don't plan on changing it, but I think I need more power overall. What is your advice regarding the string and tension I should use? I have 2 VCore 98s, so I could potentially string them with different tensions in order to better see the differences. Thank you for your time!

    Great to have you back to tennis! ReString Zero lasts the longest in my experience for two primary metrics, tension maintenance and resistance to notching. Its very hard to break a full bed of this stuff and it plays very well for a longtime due to the slick coating. The problem is the string doesn't have very much feel. You get HUGE power and spin though. I prefer ReString Sync, the tension maintenance is the same, its not quite as durable, but still plays better for a lot longer than strings like RPM Blast or Hyper-G and the feel is more connected.

    If up front cost isn't a huge issue and you aren't breaking strings, you'll get the best results from natural gut. A cheap syngut might help you too, but if you are ripping big topspin shots already there's nothing wrong with sticking to poly. Could experiment with dropping to 40lbs on the next job too.

    How do you go about following the tension recommendations printed on the racket? For example, my flexpoint radical tour is 57 +-5. Why do they list a tension range and if I wish to string a full poly at 50, are there negatives?

  • @TennCom

    @TennCom

    Жыл бұрын

    IMO manufacturer's recommended tension range is nothing more that a reference point for beginners. There are no serious risks or benefits stringing outside that range. You should do whatever you want. FP Radical's tension range would have been decided before Poly would have been a common choice for players. 57lbs is mostly related to nylon or gut in this case. There are zero risks to stringing below the recommended tension. Stringing above the range could void the warranty if the racquet were to break on the machine, but that only matters in the first year of a racquet's life while the warranty is still active. Its extremely extremely rare to break a racquet on the machine due to high tension. You'd had to be constantly stringing over 80lbs for this to start causing issues.

Oddly, I didn't really believe this was the case about 18 months ago, as largely, my experience with different strings was limited to my own racquet. However, in doing testing with Simon, we would always notice that his Gravity Pro would barely change based on the strings while my Extreme Tours would change significantly. I’m trying to get more power out of my 16x19 360+ prestige pro (prior to the name change). It’s a racket I only keep as a backup because the way it cuts thru the air suits my swing like a glove, and is surprisingly maneuverable despite the weight. I’ve tried softer polys and lower tensions. Perhaps it’s just feel, but with those setups the ball may fly longer, but not necessarily faster. Does swing speed become a factor relative to how soft/loose the string is? Maybe I just need a crisp feeling poly that offers decent power for my prestige.

  • @TennCom

    @TennCom

    Strings typically don't affect ball speed. If you want to hit harder you can add more weight to the racquet (while still swinging as fast) or swing faster. You could try stringing tighter to see if that forces you to swing harder.

    I think the more important thing would be finding a heavier racquet. The MPL is probably too light and you've got to make up for that lightness by swinging too fast. Adding just a leather grip would add about 10g to the handle which should help the racquet remain stable through the shot so you don't have to rip the felt off the ball when you are attacking. I also find the increased handle weight makes it easier to time your swing.

    I recommend going with a hybrid setup. Poly can be iffy for those at 3.5 in terms of how effective it actually is. If you are worried about losing control, Tecnifibre Triax is an excellent string that offers similar control to a poly. I've seen pro-level players use that string in a full bed. Natural gut hybrids are still king on tour for a reason. If the price and durability are working well for you, i recommend sticking with that. Hyper-G is set to be released in a round verison which should help you get more life out of the gut. If you want a little bit of a softer setup, I like using Yonex Poly Tour Pro as a cross. If you want some more power and feel, Signum Pro Firestorm is excellent. If you want more power and feel and a softer setup, I've really been enjoying Head Hawk Power.

  • @TennCom

    @TennCom

    Жыл бұрын

    I have not come across any empirical evidence that tension is even correlated with spin. Any anecdotal evidence you might read from players is their subjective experience. It's possible that higher tensions force you to swing faster, thereby generating more spin. Its possible the higher ball trajectory from a lower tension forces you to brush up the back of the ball more, generating more spin. So you can alter tension to alter your technique to increase/decrease your spin, but the tension itself should not affect spin.

    I am switching from a Yonex Ezone 100 strung typically with gut / poly hybrid with the gut in the mains at 44/40 lbs. I play exclusively doubles at. 4.5-5.0 level and hit mostly flat off the ground but serve with lots of slice and kick on serves. Currently use VS GUT 17 And Solinco Hyper-G 20. I am switching to a Solinco Whiteout 18x20 XTD. Given I am both changing string density, and the racket itself in this transition, I’d appreciate any thoughts you have on string type, gauge, and string tension for the solinco racket. I would think thinner gauge string is better for the denser string patterns? I would also assume lower string tension is better with the denser string patterns? The Solinco white out also is a less powerful frame than the Ezone 100, so that might impact your recommendation as well. I appreciate any thoughts you have.

  • @TennCom

    @TennCom

    Interesting switch! I agree with your initial assumptions, go to a thinner gauge and tension to balance out the tighter pattern and reduction in power. I'm not sure how the gut's durability would be by using such a think cross string though. I worry about the smaller contact point increasing the strain on the gut, so I'm thinking maybe just leave the strings the same and drop the tension to 42/38. I don't find that the launch angle on the Whiteouts to be that much lower than most 16x19's. I'm finding myself liking pretty much the same tension in my old 16x19 Extreme as in the Whiteout. Could also consider going to Hyper-G soft 1.20 instead of Hyper-G 1.15 to replicate the lower gauge without actually going thin and risking too much sawing.

    @@TennCom The switch was intended to give me more control and consistency. I found that the Ezone 100 - which is a terrific racquet - with the larger head, more open string pattern, and thicker beam - would occasionally launch a ball or two. I was worried if I went to an 18x20 for the improved control I would lose too much power - but them Solinco came along with the XTD version of the Whiteout 18x20. I find that I am definitely less prone to over-hitting with the Solinco and I am actually serving bigger and more consistently with it. The slightly better reach on volleys has already come in handy on a number of occasions. Now just need to dial in the hybrid sting tension and strings. It is obvious that thinner is better here with the denser string pattern. Worries that a soft poly might make the frame feel mushy with the gut in the mains.

    Yonex Poly Tour Air is a very soft and powerful polyester string. Tennis Warehouse recently did a video review on it if you want more info. I would recommend stringing PT Air mains and gut crosses at 52/50lbs. The gut and softness of the poly should still protect your arm. Dropping the tension should give you easier access to depth. Putting the poly in the mains will make sure your strings snapback more. Super Smash is a fine option if you are a string breaker. Its cheap and stiff. Its also mostly only recommended by one coach here on KZread who has some very suspect recommendations on tennis equipment that aren't always backed up by clear explanations, even if they are well meaning.

    I'll stick to my conviction that modern racquets are designed mainly the poly-users in mind. Plus, there is the testers' bias. Every on-line tester could be misleading for the following reasons 1) They are not testing racquets with anything other than polys (At best with hybrid setups) 2) Even if they test with something else they are not using those strings in their regular game play so their evaluation of the racquet would be biased (Comments like "Too much power" or "Control could be an issue" or "not as spin friendly as my favorite polys" Yes, English might sound barbaric if you are French speaker) I don't think I can find any racquet reviewer recommending Serena's set up before 2012: full bed natural gut on a 104 headsize with a stiffness of 61 (in 2013) Therefore on the viewer side, we all need some grains of salt with these commentaries.
