My go-to program for introducing friends to figure skating is Yuzu’s 2017 WC FS, Hope and Legacy. It’s got quads, it’s got artistry, it’s got an eye-catching costume (admittedly not as eye catching as Origin 2.0 😂) and it’s got great music. It might be a tad slow for some, but I’ve found it to be very effective as a gateway skate :)

The Moulin Rogue program was such a culmination of so many things for me. I love Moulin Rogue, I love Roxanne, and Come What May is one of my absolute favorite love songs. And of course, I'm a huge Tessa and Scott fan, and I went into those Olympics wanting them to win gold so bad. Watching it for the first time was an out of body experience. It's impossible for me to watch it without getting chills and crying at the end. Such an incredible performance. On a somewhat related note, I think my favorite Yuzu performance (or at least one of them) is his Haru yo Koi gala from the last Olympics. Sometimes there are performances where the performer's love for their craft is just present in every note, in every movement, in every second. Combined with it being his farewell to competition, it was just so emotional and beautiful, and really highlighted his artistry and elegance. It didn't have all of the jumps of a competitive program, but it shined just as brightly without them.

Although I was already a casual fan, the performances that recently got me into seriously watching figure skating were Tessa and Scott's Moulin Rouge (just gorgeous), the Shibutani's free dance and exhibition gala at Pyeongchang (possibly my favourite ice dance team) and both of Stéphane Lambiel's programs at Vancouver in 2010 (despite the mistakes, his interpretation and musicality are beautiful, La Traviata always makes me cry). Also, although it's not figure skating and they were with different partners, for a while I was obsessed with Meryl Davis and Charlie White's performances on Dancing with the Stars. Meryl's foxtrot and Charlie's quickstep especially, they were born for those styles. All of their olympics programs are gorgeous as well.

I love how many different programs you showed in this video! Sometimes I feel like when people try to get someone into FS they tend to recommend their own favourites only - which is totally okay, but not everyone likes the same styles. For example I truly acknowledge the greatness of Yuzuru Hanyu or Yuna Kim, but Nathan Chen, Shoma Uno and Aliona Kostornaia were the ones who dragged me into the sport truly (and I really never looked back since lol). I think it's important to realize that FS is not only about the atlethics, but also about the different types of storytelling and energies, and all could be beautiful, powerful and captivating to anyone - we all just have our own preferences. So thanks again for the well-thought video! Great quality as always :))

@Paola La REALLY a fan of your channel and this is SUCH a good post! What a great idea. I was a fan when very young, I skated as a young kid in the 1980s and early 1990s. In the UK Torvill and Dean (along with John Curry and Robin Cousins) were superstars and all Olympic champions. Studying meant I stepped away from skating in the mid 90s and 2000s. 2008: Tessa and Scott 2008 Umbrellas of Cherbourg blew me away - then again in 2010 Mahler Adagio and nearly all of their programs. Then Yu Na Kim/Mao Asada rivalry - I was hooked right back; add in Patrick Chan and Yuzuru Hanyu followed by Aliona Savchenko/Bruno Massot 2018 (choreographed by Christopher Dean), Russian drama and I can show You Tube figure skating videos to all my friends for HOURS!!

  • @Historian212

Michelle Kwan for me, then Oksana Biyul. The great Robin Cousins. So many from the past. And if you're going to include Ice Dancing in the Figure Skating category (most people don't), then you have to include the iconic Bolero by Torvill and Dean. I'm a fan of Tessa and Scott, but Torvill and Dean totally showed the world how to make Ice Dancing into storytelling. They broke the ice, as it were.

But the first figure skating vid I actually saw was *Hanyu’s 2018 Olympic free skate* & I was in tears by the end! Ever since then I’ve been following all the major skating events ❤ Also, as a dancer, skating was the only real sport I could get into & fully understand because of the artistic & emotive components. Baiul's gold-medal performance at 94' Lillehammer would also be a great introduction to the 90s era of skating, as well as the 6.0 system. Would be nice to see other 90s legends besides Harding (as much as I love her) to get some recognition. Also, for good measure, check out these ladies: Ito, Yamaguchi, Bonaly(personal fav), Sato, Kwan, and of course, Baiul.

My reintroduction to being a figure skating fan was through my love of mess; it was when I discovered the Sochi drama then the Russians' drama. And now I can tell jumps apart without slo-mo.

Thank you so much for including Tonya in your top 5! She is the reason I fell in love with the sport. Whilst a controversial figure, her combination of athleticism and technique is truly unmatched. Very few skaters even today attain the height that she did, whilst using perfect technique, especially on her gorgeous triple lutzes ❤️❤️

I personally prefer Ito's or even Bonaly's (at times) athleticism, but there will always be something about Tonya that intrigues me. Her 91' Skate America Free Skate is something that is engrained into my brain permanently, despite the mishaps. Perhaps, that's how I feel about her as a person as well. The lutz was certainly her best jump.

any Michelle Kwan, any Tessa and Scott, any Gordeeva and Grinkov, and Adam Rippon. Skating during the TV age was so different. People watch Battle of the Blades, Stars on Ice, Holiday on Ice. People stayed up to watch Grand Prix on air at certain time. Sure GoE was lower, much lower, but people loved strength in character and quality of skating. MK was the queen on making sure success isn't measured in skating, but how you challenge yourself as a person. She tried back to back reverse camel spin, she tried firing Frank Carrol on Olympic year, she had a caste on months before Nagano, she had to show humbleness when lost to Tara in 1998, she tried going to UCLA while still competing, she tried working for the secretary of state at the time. It's something girls nowadays need to learn: competing is an experience to challenge your strength and courage, it's not about drama and gossip, it's about growing as a person, and seeing beyond competition.

I remember i was just passing in front of the tv and i stopped to watch. Also i really love Gilles/Poirier van Gogh program. And sui/han bridge over troubled water❤

Totally agree on Tessa&Scott and Oona & Gage Brown. Though my ultimate top will be always Stéphane Lambiel. Unpopular opinion that Yuzuru Hanyu is just not my cup of tea. Other ultimate top for me is Mao Asada. The one who got me into skating in 2004 was Brian Joubert. The reason I'm still with skating today is Stephane and Mao, since 2006.

Thank you. All wonderful programs. I am not sure I would pick all of these as the top five but it is your opinion. I appreciate the defnition is program not skaters to get people hooked on skating. I wouldn't have Savchenko and Bruno as they had like one month when thye won Olymics and World gold. Savchenko was more known for her other partner. Robin. While the germans were techincially superior teams like ARtur and both his partners had momre memorable and arguably eye catching performances. MIchelle Kwan's beauty on ice and Oksana' Baiul's musicality and grace espeically her olympic year short program are gigantic hooks. The energy from RIver Dance by Jason Brown, the sure brilliance of Bolero by Torvill and Dean. Ilia Malin's quad fest. at worlds this year might hook people. Yulia Lipnskaya's Olympic free skate in the team event was just wow you didn't need to be a skating enthusiasm to get hooked. Yagudin's freeskate the Man in th emask?? was also something that would interest even the non fan.
