Except the F-35 is stealthier than the F-22, carries more payload than an A-10, has two-way datalink, has a more powerful radar, better avionics, a glass cockpit, and a $400,000 helmet that lets you literally look through the plane. Oh I also forgot to mention it outmaneuvers the F-16 according to the people who actually fly it. If anything the Raptor is the little brother who's still never seen actual combat because he spends his time losing dogfights with Eurofighters at Red Flag. ;)

@@toofless4541 that Red Flag story is bullshit, the only reason the F-22 lost is because it was forced into close quarters, when it was intended to eliminate threats long before it was even seen. Not to mention, the F-35 can't dogfight, which is an unnecessary skill, seeing as how the last recorded dogfight was in the 80s, but the whole reason the military has so much funding is for "what if" scenarios like "what if we go to war again?" "we'll need top of the line shit to compete with". The F-35 is capable, what 5th-gen fighter isn't? But being a jack-of-all-trades means it won't excel in one area particularly. It would've been much better for the plane if it was simply three more separate planes. A good bit more costly for damn sure, but also better at the skills it *needs* to have.

Alternative title: The Only 5 Fifth Generation Stealth Fighters on the Planet.

Dang did not realize how much smaller the F-35 is compared to the F-22. Two beautiful planes wow.

@Cesar hernandez I think the F-22 is better than the F-23 overall. The F-23 might have been a bit stealthier from some angles, but less from others (showed its engines at some angles), and I don't buy that it was faster. The YF-23 was *very slightly* faster than the YF-22 (like by 0.02 Mach), and who knows about the final designs? With different intakes and probably the requirement for radar blockers, the F-23 might have ended up slower than the F-22, which has similar intakes as the YF-22. The F-22 also has superior weapon bays, in my opinion.

There are only 2 5th generation stealth fighters. Only 2 of them are in production and service. Hypothetical, still in development and years away from production aircraft shouldn't count in a best of. The Russian SU-57 is the closest to be in production, with currently not even enough produced, operating models to make 1 full squadron, however, the US F-35 swept the international market for purchasers, and Russia was unable to secure enough buyers to complete their program or put the SU-57 into production. China walked back their stealth fighter program due to serious complications, and spent billions to buy Russian SU-35 4.5 generation fighters. China is at least 10 years from mass producing their first 5th generation fighter.

If anything, the technical specifications are based more on the F-35 than the F-22. If you look at the front of the aircraft, the design is awfully similar. In regards to overall body shape, it looks more like the experimental Mig 1.44 Flatpack. The experimental X-36 also possessed front carnards and was considered very capable of stealth.

Don't worry, if information about the F-22 is public and some of it is, you can bet that there is something out there that no one besides the airforce knows about.

Isn't it funny how those UFOs or UAPs or whatever they call them happen to show up when navy fighters are working up tactical maneuvers? I love how the fact that the UAPs showing up at the CAP point is evidence of superiors intelligence,,,, or the simpler explanation they guys controlling the "tic tacks" were onboard the carrier listening to the mission briefing before they headed to their Drone control pod. And the debate over Gen6 fighters being manned or unmanned has not been decided upon. If you have ever heard any of these stories like Commander Fravier's, the opps coordinator always asked prior to the exercise begins is "What kind of weapons do you have" the answer is, of course, dummy weapons, but the question has been asked before every instance,,,,, not because they want to make sure the pilots are safe against little green men, but to make sure someone does not accidentally destroy our Gen 6 prototype crafts that could perhaps incorporate a bit of Area 51 know-how under the proverbial hood.

My father flew as a navigator in a recon Mosquito out of Algiers looking for subs in WWII, I have some pics and stuff here. He took a picture of a P38 flying beside him in one.

I wonder how their actual combat performance compares. Its fun to speculate and all but at the end of the day I don't think that it is possible to accurately rank modern fighter jets given that exact specifications are classified. That and even if you did know the exact specifications figuring out how those specs would translate into results would also be difficult (especially having to account for pilot training, doctrine, and wartime conditions).

It's kind of lol that back in the 90's both Lockheed Martin and the US media used to rave about the contributions made to the F-35 design by Yakovlev via their partnership with LM on the propulsion system. Yet in the Putin era they never talk about it as US/Russian cooperation is a taboo thing now.

I would place the SU-57 above the F-35. Although the F-35 is versatile and is said to replace almost all of 4th gen fighters, it can't, because it can't dogfight and is not very manoeuvrable. Because the SU-57 is an excellent dogfighter and in many cases can match the F-22, and can take off from an aircraft carrier, it is far better than the F-35. The Raptor still reigns supreme, especially since it was recently updated, but the SU-57 is second, set to be a decent rival.

The SU-57 is like a flying school bus in rear aspect stealth compared to the F-22. Just facts.

I do n’t know how good the F35 is. I only know that it hit the Pacific before it started fighting last year. Maybe this is its fighting mode. There are also dozens of F22 dropped, so I think they will be eliminated without enemies.

The US debt is the greatest threat to our insanely expensive 5th gen fighters. If we can't field enough of them then it doesn't matter how good they are. Edit: I think the current gen is the limit, we just barely have enough to be effective right now, but if the current trend continues...we're gonna end up with a single billion dollar plane the Air Force gets to use on weekdays, the Navy gets on weekends, and the marines get to look at and wish they had one.

@@fshn4x4 agreed. I recently had to write the paper regarding why F22 dominates the sky. And one of the article I cited mentions and gives the data about quality and quantity. The article is peer reviewed. If u want the link let me know. But yeah U.S. Air force is changing it jas to balance the quality and quantity of the jets they have in their arsenal.

@@kristalsunuwar8675 The compromises made purely for the squishy organic meatbag in the cockpit are very expensive, but the Air Force leadership is dominated by fighter jocks. They are really struggling with objectively looking at the technological landscape because their ego is wrapped up in "flight suit attitude" that helped them dominate the skies for decades. Now though it's pretty clear that a bunch of nerds with a lifetime playing video games sitting in a bunker flying unmanned high performance planes could probably crush manned aircraft when you factor in the quantity we could field with that paradigm. They just can't let go, though.

Only in close combat so it says very little about actual effectiveness in a combat situation, and we don't know anything about the pilots involved. F-22 pilots can still be new recruits.

I wonder if internal missiles bay even needed in the future when a stealth fighter could be escorted & protected by a squad of stealth missiles drones

Just wait until the British Tempest program gets going and is put into Production, it’ll be the best fighter the world has ever seen

Tempest won't be combat ready until 2035 and a flying prototype won't be ready until 2025... the US will have revealed a "6th gen fighter" by then as well. The F22 has been flying since 1997 xD

Take out the Me 163 and make it a stealth aircraft, then you don't have to discuss which is the best one
