My grandfather had a simple strategy. Nobody hunted on his 160 acres in the hills the first couple weekends of deer season. He had two ponds. One in front of the cabin at about 30 yards, and one about 100 yards behind the cabin past the outhouse. Then he would either sit on the porch of his cabin and get a buck. However, several times he spotted bucks from the outhouse. So eventually he got a buck from the outhouse with his pants around his ankles. If that outhouse didn't scare them off..... one tinkle in the woods isn't going to drive them away.

I am 11 years old and a girl but I’ve never had interest in hunting till this year. I went hunting with my dad once and didn’t see much. I went the next day and shot my first deer it was a big eight point buck. The very next time I went hunting this year I shot another eight point buck. My dad now won’t let me shoot more eight pointers. I’ve only been hunting 3 times one year and shot 2 eight point bucks. Just wanted to share

Callee Gerber; Good choice! The reason I am saying is my first deer was an 11pt with a funny shaped left main beam. It floated around the shed and garage for years before it was certainly taken by some yard guys my mother hired. All I have of my first deer is a single photo. It will be hard to loose or damage if its hanging.

I peed off my stand and immediately after 2 bucks walked in from 2 different directions.

I have to interject something: Those who claim to be animal lovers and hate hunting don't have a clue. The truth is, hunters love animals 100 times more than those armchair judges. In all the times I've been out in the off season picking up trash in the woods, or planting trees/edible plants, placing salt licks, not once have I run across one of these haters doing the same thing. However, I have run into many hunters doing it. Hunter haters think if the animals weren't hunted, it would be just like a Disney movie. The fact is, left unchecked, they'd eat themselves into starvation. An acre or sq mile of land can only support so much wildlife. If it is overpopulated, the animals strip every bit of food, develop disease and in many cases end up wandering into populated areas because they are so hungry. Furthermore, starvation is a slow painful process. So, what's better: A single kill shot and population management, or slowly dying from lack of food? Finally, if you're so gung ho, by all means have a bulldozer come and level your house to create more habitat. Hunters are the biggest conservationists around. They care about wildlife more than you ever could because in your ideal world, animals suffer. And stop feeding wild animals. It can only be detrimental to them in the long run as well as dangerous. Scott McMan Not only that truth but the Department of fish and Game that watch habitats animal counts and even diseases. They make the rules of what, where, when and what you can take to keep them all doing well. They create habitat when needed too. Is it anti hunters or PETA and the like that fund them doing this ? No it is hunters licenses, tags, stamps etc... An animal killed to be eaten by a hunter has a much better life that one raised in a fenced area or cage. Harder to obtain wild game makes more respect for what we eat too so F you hunter haters. PETA has filed cases where deer were given ti Indian tribes. The deer taken were put in storage until the case was dismissed. Problem was the storage was not cold and the meat was bad and tossed.

@@brianbirc - Couldn't have said it better myself. By the way, I love the shows about fish and game officers. North Woods Law and Lone Star Law. Those who hate Game Wardens should watch those shows. They would see just how lenient these officers are and how they prefer to give people a break as long as they are honest and up front. I can't stand poachers or those who break game laws in general. They aren't Sportsmen. They are just killers and profiteers. And, while there can be some confusing language on documents, most of it is clear as crystal. So, ignorance of the law is seldom a good excuse.

I really had an ex-hunting partner that did this!

20 years ago on a warm day right at the beginning of the season my dad and I were jigging for bream in a creek. We weren’t camouflaged as I was wearing a white shirt and we weren’t concerned about noise. We choose a spot and started catching fish after fish. We were at that spot for 15 to 20 minutes and my dad had just lit a cigarette when the largest deer I’ve seen started making a ton of noise in the thicket just across the creek. With a 12ga that I now own today my dad drew a bead on the 10pt and he is now proudly mounted in my dads shop. Deer hunting is preparation and luck. That day was just pure luck and my favorite memory.

Oh fuck I bring a gallon of coffee with me every day and I piss coffee smelling piss and I’ve never had a deer even notice. Sure you can tell when they smell it but it has never scared a deer off

I always bring a bottle to pee in!!!! It’s so much easier to drink that way.

Jeff, I was chasing a 14 pt. 5 yr. old, Moses this yr,. and peed off my stand before dark. A few minutes later I looked down and Moses was sniffing and looking up at me, although I was hidden by pine branches. It was after shooting hours, so I just watched and after sniffing for a few minutes he walked off. I was drinking apple juice, so maybe Ted was correct. It was the best experience of my hunting season this year. Years ago we would get down and walk 50 plus yards. to pee so the scent would not be near the stand, not the greatest action making all that noice and movement in the woods. Grant Woods told me the same thing you stated, that it will totally dissipate in 20 minutes. Keep up the good work. thanks.....Bob Benson

I had an interesting hunt this year. I hunt in Northern Ontario. Monday was heavy wet snow, visibility was poor and in spite of lots of deer being in the area, I only caught a glimpse of a mature doe with no real shot potential. For the next 3 days it was minus 24 C, with a sharp arctic wind out of the North, and I did not see any deer for the first two days of the cold snap, I changed my strategy on the third cold day and hunted a really wet low area with thick ceders, that is where they were, saw two in the morning, but could not get a clear shot due to the thick brush, and in the afternoon I took a different position which was a little more open but was less favourable for wind. I spotted a doe that was quite a ways out (a little bit of a long shot for me, I wanted to wait), the wind changed and was blowing on my backside, and surprisingly, the doe picked up my scent and was curious, she started slowly my way. She got within 40 yards of me and I could see she was a small yearling, not worth taking to the butcher, so I took a picture of her and called that my shot. Friday, I had no luck in the morning, it was much warmer (above freezing) but still windy and I thought I would try still hunting as the wind might cover the sound I make as I take steps. But again, no luck. In the afternoon, heading back to camp, I spotted two does in an opening but I would have had to shoot in the direction of some cottages, which is not an acceptable shot. So I moved, belly crawled for about 150 yards to change my shot angle. I decided to close the distance a bit by approaching again on my belly, until I was about 80 yards out, I had a large Oak for cover, but to take the shot, I had to come out from behind the tree, I did a little peek and they made me and were gone out of sight in an instant. No deer this year, but I am ok with that, I am glad I let the little one go. No regrets!

I have had deer walk right up to me from down wind. I don't think you can ever completely fool the deer's nose. My theory is that by using good scent control the deer don't realize I'm as close as I am. I used to hunt in an agricultural area. Deer smell people every day and also have activity around them . If they ran away every time they smelled people that's all they would do. We now hunt in a very narrow wooded valley. Deer here are much more sensitive to humans

john kendall; Years ago on a clear cold morning I was hunting along the Frio in LaSalle county TX. I had worked the edge of a thicket heading upstream and saw a large crooked Mesquite whose trunk paralled the ground. I sat on the horizontal trunk facing upstream with my back to the rising sun. After about 1/2 an hour I panned to my right and nearly came face to face with a basket six point. His nose was to the ground and remarkably was coming up the exact path I had taken to the Mesquite. He walked within seven yards of me and remained oblivious of my presence. Why he did not pick up my sent on the ground? Who knows. But I remained down wind during the event, though not intentionally in this case. I never have used sent eliminators before or since, but conditons were in my favor that morning. I agree 100% deer get used to humans but these deer remained free of human interaction except for the deer season. Forgot to mention, I did let him go on his way.

Most important thing is to hunt every day of hunting season at the right time.

Another great video and as always informative. I started using my own urine the last season to open/refreshen scrapes and it seems to work. I also quit worrying about peeing in the woods and I agree I haven’t seen any issues. On scent control, I do all your saying and this year I added an ozone generator for my clothes bag. That seems to work as well and I wash my clothes much less. Generally now only after a harvest since I am not very good keeping them clean during field dressing! I haven’t had any winding issues this year. Thanks again for your videos and Merry Christmas!

I've always noticed that a doe's tracks are more rounded and, heart shaped, while a buck's track is wider and more elongated!

It's actually the other way around...but even then it's never defined, at all. Bucks travel several times more than does, so their toe is often worn down a lot more. Even then tho, it depends on the terrain, soil, rocks, etc. Those bucks tracks do generally get larger tho than does tho.

@@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751: In my neck of the woods where I hunt (here in Kentucky - Urban/Surburban, Public/WMA - Bluegrass Region), it's as I described. We grow some BIG Bucks, but the Does (minus a few) are typical large dog size and weight.

You bring up some very good points that people should listen to, and forget the books and magazines, except the scent issue. I have hunted deer for 38 consecutive years. I pee in scraps, I pee out of my stand, I make scrapes and then pee in them. Deer could care less. Deer do not go to school and learn human ways. It's the other way around, we try to learn their ways. When you gotta go, go, and don't worry about scent. Many hunters will walk right past them when they are bedded and they never jump up. If trying to jump deer off bed, walk in and back a ways on the same path and see what jumps up then. I have learned this, SIGHT, SOUND, SMELL. If you block 2 out the 3, the deer don't know you're there. Wear solid colors when hunting deer. Black, brown, dark green, or even light green, but make sure the colors are solid. No camo. Camo has features that give you away when you move even slightly. When rattling, go up wind of a bedding area, not down wind or side ways. The wind will send the sound further down range and increase you chances of raising a bedding buck, or one that may be passing by that you can't see. I have rattled in bucks from over 200 yards away. Bucks will bed where they feel comfortable, and they never pay attention to wind direction. It is what it is. It doesn't take a big gun to bring down a big buck. .223 on up will do the trick. Deer tracks are distinguishable from does. Bucks leave flat track from toe to heel, side to side. Does leave an arched track from center to outside, toe to heel in the center, with the center higher than the outside. Bucks have fuller and bigger pads than does, and this is why the have flat tracks. Even young button bucks tracks can be distinguished from a doe even at an early age. Deer droppings are also a way to tell if a good sized buck is in the area (body wise). Does drop pellets, bucks drop bundles of pellets, or mush, even from birth. The bigger the dropping, the older the deer (and bigger), regardless of doe or buck. I don't use deer scent cover up, and could care less about it. I was sold on them in my early deer hunting days, but as time went on I figured out they don't work. I haven't used any cover up for well over 20 years now. If a deer is going to smell you, then it doesn't matter what you're wearing, or using, they will smell you. Who's to say the scent you use will not spook them? On the flip side, I keep my scent exposed so the deer will get used to smelling me in their area. This way, when I am gone they are not spooked. When I come back and should they smell me, they are not spooked because they have smelled me before. Don't use deer scent's or cover up's, be yourself and let the deer get used to you being around. Trail cameras have revealed they are not bothered one bit with human scent, mine or other's as well, because they walk around and right over peoples tracks and paths minutes after a person has been there and they just go about their business. Spend less time worrying about the deer smelling you or making you out, and more time hunting. Best way to hunt deer, is to find out where they are and go to them, rather than mixing scents, wind, and locations trying to bring them to you. Remember, you're hunting them, they're not hunting you. Place your stand according to their location, not yours.

How’s it going with season?

I've been a hunter all of my life and I am 65 years old so since 10 years of age I have been in all kinds of habitat. To me, the two most important things about hunting are noise that you make and sudden movement. If you are quiet and you practise moving every part of your body in a slow motion when you do move that is the best practise that you can do to help you when you are still hunting. They don't call it 'still' hunting for any reason other than that.

I tried hard to teach a friend of mine that he needed to stop moving around in the stand, and his way of thinking was, if he couldn't see the deer, then the deer can't see him. I told him a deer may be 500 yards through the woods watching you, and you will never see him. To this day he has never killed a mature buck. Every now and then he gets lucky and a young and dumb deer will mess up and get close enough to him. I tell him it's all good because he's leaving the big mature bucks for me.. lol.

Great video and agree 100 percent with most of. I have been bow hunting since 1977 and have been peeing out of my tree for years. I am a scent free fanatic.Scent free bath, scent free under arm deodorant, Clothes are washed in scent free with no UV brighteners and stored in Hunter Specialties scent free bags, nee high swamper boots and total spray down head to tow and also spray down bow.Nothing I hunt in is anywhere near the public meaning a restaurant or gas station pumping gas in your hunting boots or smelling like bacon. I know if I can walk to my stand and deer can walk in 10 minutes later where I walked and not be on full alert that what I'm doing is working. I believe if you incorporate scent free, being super quiet , go in and out with low impact as you walk and sitting high at a minimum of 25 to 30 feet that it all comes together. Once again great video!!

The pee thing is true. More than 20 years ago, I had to pee like a Russian race horse while deer hunting, so I went up the ridge about 50 yards and had a good one. About 30 minutes later, a big doe came over the top of the ridge, went straight to the place that I peed, and stuck her nose right in it. Never flagged, never got excited. She walked past me, to my right, at about 30 yards. I had the scope on her, trying to grow horns on her. She spread out her front legs and dipped her head to give me a clear look. I think she was trying to say, "Look! I ain't got no horns!" It was bucks only then. She walked on down the ridge.

It's always amazed me as to how people think a mature and or rutting buck is a super deer that has this mythical power over his whole habitat. I'm too old to be climbing in stands anymore but I do occasionally use my old Texas stand I've had sitting in the same spot for 30 years. I've killed many nice mature bucks out of that stand and all of what you said is true and really makes sense when you think about it. I've never worried about urinating in the woods and on two occasions can remember having to stop in the middle of what I was doing to pick up the rifle because of a buck walking within 30 feet of me. Hell I've had coyotes do the same thing. I don't buy cover scents but I'm careful and not rolling around the brush so I just try to watch my wind directions. I'm a big fan of changing spots each year and not get hung up on hunting the same spot every year as deer move. I do agree with you on scents, wind directions concerning bedding and does with young. I've got one old doe I feed every day and she's damn near tame. She always has 2 little ones and has for every year I have seen her. She's got to be 8 this year. My only real deer concern as I get older is the amount we've lost to coyotes. I'm seeing alot less fawns over the last 5 years and it's really starting to show in the populations. I can't seem to kill enough of them to make much difference. I've see 5 this year while hunting and those on a twenty acre tract.

Great feedback Kirby, and experience level! Sounds like we have a lot in common with the way we hunt. What is different with a mature buck to me is that he becomes more if an independent thinker. He makes decisions often on hi own and becomes a lot more unpredictable than doe family groups...which are herd mentality creatures. Much easier to define movements with doe family groups. Just different creatures almost. Not mythical for sure, lol...just a lot different! Really appreciate the comments Kirby, have a happy New Year!

Deer season is this weekend for me and we seen a huge buck around our blind today and every time there is a buck on here I start getting the buck feels

My Dad has literally had deer walk withing five feet of where he took a dump out of his stand.

As far as scent control goes, keeping the wind right is the main ingredient. There is no need to spray the bottom of your boots either. After you take a few steps in the woods, your boots will smell like the woods.

I respectfully disagree! I think it is so important to do Everything you can to eliminate your scent including ozonics! 41 years of hunting has told me that swirling winds nearly always occur and if you can eliminate 90% of your scent it can make a huge difference!! But of course playing the wind is the highest priority!!!

Jeff, I've watched MANY of your videos and read a huge amount of your things ( Along with many other Deer and Habitat managers) and have always been VERY impressed/ interested in your viewpoints....probably more than any of the other deer/habitat managers around. Heres my one "hang up or issue". In Basically EVERY SINGLE video you feel the need to tell everyone how long you've done everything or that you did it first. I get it to a degree. But in EVERY business, including deer/habitat management, length of time doing something DOES NOT automatically mean more knowledge...more success...or being "better" at something. If that was the case my father, who deer hunted, and yes even did what they called " deer plantings" 40 years ago, would automatically be a better deer hunter or deer/habitat manager than myself...or even YOU. Anyway, just a sidetone for you. I thoroughly enjoy your videos....keep up ht great work. !!!

I can appreciate that for sure, thanks for the comments! The problem is that everyone is an expert when it comes to hunting. Everyone has a KZread channel. The reason I deliver my experience because this is purely a teaching channel. Of course we get into a good discussion but but when I'm here to teach and I want food to know the level of experience that I have. I am proud of that experience. You can count on 1 hand the number of people with this level of experience. I want people to know that. There are so, so many bad opinions out there. Experience matters greatly in this world, when it comes to creating contract that matters. Content that should be listened too or trade or viewed. Most habitat managers...even many well know names...work on 20 parcels or less per year. Many work in one small region. Many don't have a mature buck background or solid hunting background. Successful hunting background. Yes there opinion matters, but most don't have much experience to back it up. I point my experience level it, because I do have the experience to back up my own personal concepts that I have singlularily devloped over decades. I try to help people see through the clutter and I want them to know that I have the expertise to do so. Which is why that isn't the last time you will here my level of experience doing what I do...because I want folks to know that they have come to a source to help them see through the clutter online. That's why I am here, actually. Hope that makes sense!

Great video. I haven't been hunting long, a couple of years only. And i mostly hunt roe deer in here in Sweden. What i've found regarding smell is that as long as i don't smell human i can pretty much smell whatever. We usually take a break and gather to grill some sausages at noon after hunting from dawn. And the smell of fire doesn't seem to spook them, i've harvested roe in the afternoon after basically all of us and the countryside smells of fire and smoke. Also; We hunt buck in august here, and since it's still warm outside i tend to dab on a bit of tar oil to repel insects and mosquitoes, doesn't seem to affect them either. And the first time i took a buck i had climbed down and peed and climbed back up, didn't affect the animals. What i do strongly believe though is that generic human smell; Perspiration and the like gives them a strong clue as to whats out there. Smoke, fire, pee, and tar and most of those things doesn't give them a strong human association. Sound though, oh boy are are they sound sensitive. I was out stalking this Wednesday, found a roe doe and some small ones and was figuring that one small one couldn't hurt, i was about 50 meters from it, and when i pulled back the hammer on my lever action, it bolted. Should have pulled it back slower and more silently. It was just *click* and it was gone.

Great feedback Fredrick! Sound is so critical. I think with whitetails they are very smell sensitive, just because they are so ultra conditioned to associate many people smells with humans/hunters. In particular downwind of hunters...it is game over no matter what you smell like.

I've peed on the tree while watching bucks near my stand just to see their reaction. They never even blinked an eye. Also poured out tinks doe urine while bucks where in front of me. Also, no reaction. I once bought all the deer hunting crap Wal-Mart has to offer, yet, I'd go to my stand and after a few hours, I saw nothing. But, when I got back to the truck, lit up a cigarette, turned up the radio a little, then, here come the deer, while motley crue is blasting the radio lol.

@vettelover2009 Myself included !! Also have a 900 yard shooting range on my own property ! Much of the area is covered in trees ! When I started shooting back 5 yrs ago it made my neighbors furious !!!! They reported me to the DNR saying I was shooting deer ! Many times when I was out shooting.... high power .... I seen deer . I also seen the DNR vehicles parked watching me. ( they could see my targets clearly ). Their aim was to catch me ! One day I was out shooting and a few deer crossed my target area. Just so happened the DNR was watching that too. Since I had my ear plugs in...I never heard them come up behind me. They tried to charge with shooting deer ! Be careful with your neighbors .... often they have the same idea..... scaring the deer away because of shooting. They get use to it ! Since then..... Ive never had a run in with the DNR again.

@@5000rgb They never charged me with anything..just tried to blame me.suggesting I was shooting deer. They could see the target very clearly.... the same DNR guys had been there several times. Just the neighbors kept turning me in.....hoping Id quit shooting and scaring off the deer. To this day they still turn me in. Thats 5 yrs after I started shooting.

The thing with the dew claws really helped me

I use a fully enclosed blind no need to worry about scent. But even when I used a tree stand I never used scent cover ups and never had a issue filling tags.

I’ve been peeing outta my tree stand for years I’ve had does lay down right next to where I peed

Whitetail Habitat Solutions I am 54 I grew up with those old wives tales of so much bad info lol ! Scent control is by far the best info and you need to have a plan! But I wonder why pee doesn’t send out alarm alert but you sweat and get a lil bo in the wind and deer freak out ! But I know that my deer on my land don’t freak out to my scent I’m out there cutting firewood fishing planting food plots staying in trappers cabin swimming in pond ride 4 wheelers shoot guns ! I just wear my normal stuff to hunt on my property. Swear I could use diesel fuel as a cover scent lol bar oil mixed fuel all would work lol.

He just doesn't seem to be around enough to become conditioned a lot of the time... I call does, fawns and young bucks the great deceivers! They can lull a hunter into thinking deer in general can get used to people in some way...when a mature hucks rarely does. Thanks for the comments Steve and have a happy new year!

@@stevedingman474 oh they sure can Steve, great point! I find they are a lot easier to pattern and hunt...but when it comes time to make the shot you better be very quiet and not move much! Going out with my 13 year old son Sam tonight for any deer with the crossbow...hoping he can shoot a doe but in all honesty a young buck may be an easier target to shoot for him!

Agree 100% on the peeing from the stand myth...I've actually tested this with deer around me and I've had young deer walk right into the stream and have it bounce off their head. The noise seems to attract them out of curiosity.

Excellent points. Although I believe that sprays for scent removal are a waste of money.

I agree with everything besides the dry doe thing, one of hunting camps we had a doe 3 years hand running with no fawn. Unless she was dying for 3 years.

My Grandpa never needed camo or deer calls etc. He was extremely successful in Wisconsin. Just stand by the campfire and walk through a cow patty or two. Scent control solved.

I took a friend of mine hunting and he wagged a damned metal folding chair into the woods and smoked cigars and drank coffee while hunting with a red plaid shirt and jeans. I told him he wouldn't see anything. He was the only one that killed. He missed with the first shot and dropped it on the second. It changed my whole outlook on "The Scent Commandments" and deer hunting in general..

Everytime I've killed a deer I either have a cigarette lit, or have just put one out. Including the big 9 I shot a few days ago 15yrds from me...as he walked up downwind of me, lmao

I agree with you to a point on scent control, but it is important as most mature bucks will try to get down wind, so if you aren't grunting or rattling it won't matter, but if you do plan to grunt or rattle and you smell like anything out of the ordinary a mature buck will get down wind and scent you.

Great point! The bad thing is that no matter how much scent control you practice...a mature buck will smell you. One of the reasons I don't blind call...but love it when my neighbors do 🙂 Not to mention I find with the pressure around here, most mature bucks do not come in to blind calling...some run the other way.

I used to be one of those people that would rely on the scent products to much. Now I pay closer attention to stand location so I'm always down wind of where the deer are walking. I also play my route to my stand very carefully so I know my scent wont spook deer. All I do for scent control now is wash all my cloth a few times during season and spray my boots and legs below the knee. Since I have been doing this I see way more deer. Like he said about sound I too am very careful to sound proof my stands. If there is a clip on the stand I make sure to tap them so they cant move and make any noise.

Doesn’t matter what you do the best camouflage is being still... Period.

Great video, Jeff! Love the content. I don’t normally comment on videos, but I do want to attempt to clear one point up though. At 0:40 you say “all urine turns to ammonia in 20 minutes”. I’m not sure where you obtained this info, but this isn’t entirely true. Urine is comprised of lots of different inorganic salts & organic compounds like proteins/metabolites/hormones/etc... one of the organic components is urea- this is what is broken down into ammonia (not the other components). It usually takes around 24 hours or so for the average of 3.5-4g of urea produced per urination to decompose into ammonia. Just wanted to make sure everyone here knows that, though ammonia is produced, there are other constituents that will be left behind & they can vary with diet/health. These can also be different from what deer are used to smelling in the woods.

Nick Byrd Great points and I really appreciate the clarification. And I should have stressed that urine is broken down into the smell of amonia, shortly. This was per a conversation I personally had with deer research biologist John Ozoga, 15-20 years ago. Basically a discussion of how human urine doesn't bother deer in any way. No need for bottles, leaving a stand to see, etc. Anyways...appreciate the comments and technical details...have a Merry Christmas!

I’ve never used any scent products, and I bow hunt. My main way of hunting was tracking and pursuit, hunting in Wyoming though, I would always have a strong breeze to work with usually... not cocky just cheap lol. And a lot of belly crawling through sage brush to get close enough to take a shot, also a lot of cactus in various limbs due to this...

I’ve been busted by deer before for smell. They come in close, never see me and then suddenly something spooks them and they take off. No noises were made and the deer wasn’t even looking toward my general area. No doubt that deer smelled me and took off. Doesn’t happen often but if there’s no wind blowing and they smell something unnatural then it’ll spook them (also depends where you hunt)

people who buys all these scent blockers, ozonics, etc are wasting their money, regardless how well you prevent, you can't eliminate your scent.. the best scent control is have the wind in your favor only. i used to believe all his too, til my friend prove me wrong... my friend own a lot of farm land with soybean, and corn, so he told me to take my scent blockers clothing sealed up and stored in a tote and sprayed with scent eliminator, anything that will help me beat the deer's nose..when we got to the farm i sprayed my self with scent eliminator and wore my scent blocker clothing and went to sit 10 yards in the soybean friends were the deer always come out of... just as the sun start to set deer started to poured into the field and that evening the wind was swirling... we started to see deer entered into the soybean field when all a sudden the wind swirled and some deer caught our scent and a loud snort and the whole field was a ghost town... few nights later when we had a north wind he told me to wear just cheap camo clothing just to break our outline and no scent control as we went into the soybean field he even took a piss where we gonna sit to prove that i was wasting money on all these expensive BS... we had the wind in our face blowing from the deer to us as we sat then we noticed deer started to entered the field as sun started to set... there was a lot of deer in the field and none has picked us out, until a young buck came right into us that's when he saw us and he alerted all the deer, that was the only thing they knew we were there cause he came right to us, not because he could smell us... since then i never bought these BS about scent blocker , ozonics etc... you can't beat a deer's nose regardless what you do?!! the only way to help you is, " KEEP THE WIND IN YOUR FAVOR '' that's the only way..

I have pictures of of My cigar smoking and blowing towards a deer from my ground blind and never used scene control. I get my 2 deer every year. with civilization so close to most hunting area's those scents are normal. being still and quiet is the best way to be successful.

We have the same urban issues to deal with... Houses 500 yards away at our backs. Roads 1/4 mile away. The power lines make a constant buzz. I may start to pee off the stand. The whole bottle thing is a pain in the ass.

Only thought on the "dry doe" discussion is, if you're in a herd control situation with aggressive doe harvest, targeting unaccompanied does you leave the fawns a better chance to make it to spring.

Amazing isn't it!? Such an old myth...

I have a question about scent control. For the most part, I have seen deer spook because of human scent or maybe predator scent, not so much from let's say a body wash or a perfumed soap. I had a friend call me up one day spur of the moment and ask me to go hunting. I told him iI had just showered and shaved and put cologne on and the deer would smell me a mile away. Well, I decided to go with him anyway. I shot a nice 8 point with the wind blowing right in his face at 75 yards. My theory is that some scents have no effect on deer at all and only threatening scents spook them. What is your opinion?

You gotta realize deer just be chilling and they smell cigs all the time, they just don’t see people in trees all the time so just don’t let them know you’re in a tree

I was on the fence about peeing in the woods, I do all day hunts and I got to the point where I couldn’t hold it and wasn’t fond of carrying a bottle of piss around with me. I started clearing a spot under my stand to pee. To test deer reactions I have actually urinated while bucks that I was going to let walk we’re within 100 yards of me. It never phased them, even the sound of pee hitting the bare dirt did not seem to affect them. I had a doe fawn and a year and half old buck actually make their way under the stand after the pee and smell it. I wouldn’t try this with a shooter buck in sight but I feel much more comfortable in all day sits now that I can relieve myself whenever I need.

Almost consistently all of the stories I’ve heard from hunters over the years seem to be they took their biggest bucks while they were not expecting it, for example walking back to the truck or putting your equipment away in the truck and standing around talking smoking cigarettes and not really paying attention. But then you have those who live by these rituals and rules that never even see a buck or a doe. I’ve heard guys who cut timber swear to the fact that as they are running their chainsaws they spot some of the biggest bucks I’ve ever seen and they claim the noise of the chainsaw attract the attention of the buck who is curious to find out what is going on. So the best advice is as with everything, stop wasting your money, stop listening to so-called experts, and just go out and have fun the way it’s meant to be. Because if you’re not having fun first of all you’re doing it wrong. Hunting shouldn’t be a job or exertion I’ll take a whole lot of thinking, just walk out into the woods find you a spot to sit down my tree stay quiet wait for the squirrels and have fun

Sevin Storey I’m a logger I run a skidded for my crew and we see deer all the time deer are very curious creatures and will come investigate noise!

Well up until now, I’ve DEFINITELY been carrying a large empty Gatorade bottle in my bag to piss in.

As far as where the bucks bed I've found the younger bucks bed behind the does , but the big old bruiser bucks bed in grounds with the best sight / scent advantage nearest a water source .

Deer are not afraid of gut piles.

Adrian Q i once had a buck tear the woods apart surrounding where I had feild dressed a hot doe and spike I had killed. If I had still been setting that stand I probably would have had a pretty good encounter with a big deer.

(I was told by my grandpa), always walk threw the barn first. You know like threw poop works great (still do) (COW POOP) . For best results roll in it

Especially if that same barn and poop smell is in the woods you hunt and the deer are used to it.

I used to carry a pee bottle. A quart sized sport drink bottle. When empty it sounded like a drum in the woods if it bumped up on something. When full it added a lot of weight to my pack. I quit on that idea and started “going over the rails” about 10 yrs ago with no bad results. Then I decided to make a test of it and “went” in a scrape that I had a camera watching all season. The activity actually increased for a week or so then went back to normal. Since then I have no problem “going” in the woods. If I can help it, when I’m on the ground, I will still use running water to relieve myself into or even a puddle but only if the water is close.

Great feedback Garyy, really appreciate it! I would imagine it would be very noisy when empty in a blind...or he's y when full, lol. Not something I want to carry either!

great video, didnt know about does having fawns their whole lives, thought they dried up around 6 or 7 , scent is tricky, rarely does it ever blow in a consistent direction, especially in the mountains, i keep as scent free as possible, especially being a bow hunter. Rifle hunters can get away with a little more stink....

Mountains are really tough...but even then hunting points, sides and tops can be fairly certain depending on the main wind direction and time of day. Bad thing about mountains or even big hills...is the bad scent it takes to actually get into place. You learn to hunt the wind religiously for sure...hard to control the accumulation not access scent when you are climbing 20 minutes to a 1/2 hour or more, up to a stand location.
