As someone who's owned many Vics in his time, I can say that the stock airbox and zip tube do not need to be modified. It will flow enough air to feed a mildly modified Vic just fine. Headers for a Vic cost as much as if you were buying another car at the auction so not really "affordable." ( Over $1,000 for a set of the cheaper ones.) A TB spacer doesn't really do anything but make your throttle response a tiny bit snappier. With a little fabrication skills, there is a throttle body option for drive by wire cars. Get yourself a stock throttle body off a 5.4 liter 3V truck. Those are 75mm versus the 65mm that comes stock. Many CVPI's from 06 and up already have 3:55 gears which are just fine for road trips and the occasional stop light drag race. ( My 06 came stock with 3:55's and a limited slip trac lock.) The biggest horsepower gain you will ever get is from a custom tune. A custom tune is money well spent, especially if you're on a budget like most people. Upgrading the exhaust system is another worthwhile expense. Anyone who wants to get more power out of their Vic should concentrate on two things, upgrading the exhaust system, and getting a dyno tune. If you are going to put NOS on it, you should really think about upgrading the fuel pump to a high flow one considering the pump already in your fuel tank most likely has well over 100,000 miles on it. The first time your engine leans out on spray will be the last time it ever does. Again, using a power adder like spray requires other things to support it like proper fuel supply and of course you need a tune to get it to run right. Unless you want your pistons looking like somebody used them for blowtorch practice, or sending a connecting rod through the side of your engine block. But before someone thinks about modifying their engine, they should really make sure it is in good running condition. All sensors working properly, good spark plugs, and ignition coils, fuel pump in good shape or upgraded if planning on a power adder, changing the sloppy timing chains and worn guides that are bound to be on a car with over 100,000 miles like most Vics, and things like making sure they have changed the fuel filter. No sense in modifying an engine that runs like crap because of worn or malfunctioning components is there? Doing all of those "free" tricks won't amount to a hill of beans if that 30 or so horsepower you supposedly picked up is being robbed because your check engine light is on because your O2 sensors are bad or your cats are plugged.

Modified can be very reliable as well. It takes time and money though. You have to build it right. For instance, somebody with a civilian Vic can simply go to the pick a part and get the dual exhaust and aluminum driveshaft off a CVPI and gain an instant improvement for not a lot of money.

@Ford Fanatic Dude, it's not. I even did some of this stuff on my old Ranger and maybe got 15hp. My throttle response was a lot better, but overall acceleration didn't really improve. Mods like this are only good on light weight cars, or boosted cars. An extra 15hp on a tired, old, SOHC 4.6 in a car that weighs 4,000lbs, is not noticeable.
I just bought 2003 Crown Vic and it runs like a beast. It only cost me $800 but is literally almost like new besides some dirt and cigarette burns on the seats. No repairs or replacements needed so far, no accident history, and less than 100k miles on it. This comes into my life when I desperately needed transportation, so it's a huge blessing. I've fallen in love with it, and videos like these get me hyped on all the work I want to put into it.

This is in the middle of me losing my house in a divorce and letting my mazda get repo'd and having to daily my 93 single cab flareside. Flashing your PCM with a custom tune that adds more timing generally requires 93 octane. A throttle body spacer never has and never will.
Vic already has a CAI, pulls it's air from the outside of the engine compartment in front of the radiator. As far as the spacer, you probably get more removing the dumb comb thing then the spacer gives.

The early Vics, Marquis, and Lincolns had a "snorkle" (silencer) on the front of the air box, where it drew SOME air from ahead of the radiator support, but not all. Later models have a rubber sleeve that attaches to the air box and extends forward to get ALL it's air from forward of the engine compartment. Early models should remove the "snorkle", and attach one of those rubber sleeves to the air box to provide cooler air through the "stock" system, thus saving a ton of cash and maintaining the "factory stock" appearance. As for that "dumb cone thing" -- I don't understand the engineering behind it, and it makes NO SENSE to me, as it appears to choke off a shit-ton of air to the engine at high rpms. If anybody KNOWS exactly what it does and/or how it works, please tell us. We gots to KNOW !!

I have no idea...but it has a gasket, so it stays for now.

Throttle body spacer and high octane fuel mini supercharger 🤣 that's some funny shit i reckon you be lucky to see .5 hp pmsl
Another way to get quick easy horsepower out of your Crown Vic is to put a zip tie or 3 or 5 on the back side of your gas pedal in order to take the slak out of the cable because 90% of them are stretched out a good way to check this out and see if you need to take up some slack is to take that intake tube off have somebody sit in the car and put the gas pedal to the floor look and see if the butterfly inside the throttle body is opening all the way! Many of them do not because they're trying to restrict airflow and to keep you from giving it Full Throttle I have seen many of these cables not even stretch to put adjusted and someone in the gas pedal is put to the floor the butterfly in the throttle body does not open up all the way. I do this with all cars that have a cable still operating the throttle! You gain a lot more horsepower when you can actually give your vehicle Full Throttle!!! Many times that throttle body will only open about three-quarters of the way when your throttle pedal is floored from inside the car! Trying to adjust at the throttle body rarely will work because the cable is so far stretched and they do not give you enough adjustment at the throttle body! Basically if it's got a throttle cable take the air intake tube off of the throttle body have somebody sit in the car and put your gas pedal to the floor look inside the throttle body and check and see if the butterfly has opened up all the way inside of the intake! If it doesn't climb under the dash go to the cable at the top of the throttle pedal and then put zip tie after zip tie onto the throttle cable between the cable and the pedal until when the accelerator is depressed all the way the throttle body opens up all the way! You'll be surprised just how many cars don't give the car full throttle when floored in the car. Trust me you gain a lot of horsepower when you can use more than 60% of your throttle! If you drive a vehicle open up the Heavens throttle cable check this out I can almost guarantee you your throttle body no matter what vehicle it is on isn't opening all the way! Gaining 30% more throttle for the price of a couple of zip ties now that's a horsepower gain anybody can get behind and every car just about with a throttle cable at this point is more than likely stretched or was previously adjusted so you could not give your car Full Throttle. More than likely if you're driving a car that still has a throttle cable it's at least 10 years old and that cable is stretched! A few zip ties could gain you so much power check it out!!
IF YOU HAVE A TRUE P71 DO NOT MESS WITH THE INTAKE SETUP!! IT IS BETTER!

YEP. All that extra weight on the front suspension contributes to more understeer, and changes the car's handling considerably under adverse conditions. Extra weight on the nose increases stopping distance, too. Yes, some folks think that the bumper guard thingy is "cool", and/or "bad-ass", but it has NO practical use on a street-driven, civilian vehicle.
One other trick to boost a lil horsepower and to make the air intake colder is take a small cutout of aluminum screen like you would find on a screen door and install it on the hole where air comes inside the air intake box and over the hole where the air passes through the air filter and goes into the engine. You'll immediately notice the boost in power once you do this, I've done it on a 1995 honda civic i had and man that thing cooked

@TwentytenS4B8
6 жыл бұрын
CVPI's are engineered to perform. Civilian Vics were engineered for grandma to get groceries. And yes, that's all one needs to do is get the K&N panel filter for the air box as the stock air box for a CVPI is from the Marauder and supports a 306 horsepower engine. I have to laugh at these people who put those cone air filters on there thinking they are doing something for performance. All they are doing is taking a stock system that is already a cold air intake ( It gets air from behind the driver side headlight in front of the radiator.) and "modifying" it to suck up hot engine bay air. Not to mention, they may end up with idle problems due to the fan wash from the cooling fans coming on. That's why all the aftermarket cone intake kits come with a shield that goes around the filter.

I like how he stated that all these "tricks" would amount to 30 or so horsepower. I guess those guys wasting their money on heads and camshafts to get that much gain are doing it wrong lmao! In all honesty, anyone that knows anything would tell people that there really is no free way to gain that much power. The only way to do it is with a custom tune ( Which is worth an easy 20 to 30 HP anyway.) and parts like what I mentioned in the beginning. Changing the bound to be worn timing chains and guides so your cam timing is correct will at least get you back to 250 HP where you started. Used Vics are not at that level. The only thing wrapping your zip tube in gold foil will get you is laughed at. But to each his own lol!

Your '97 Marquis is one of the early, low-powered engines (190 hp Single exhaust; 210 hp with Dual exhaust). Weak spot was ignition wires -- change to BOSCH # 09725 Mag-Core Ignition Wires and BOSCH #9605 Double-Iridium Spark Plugs @ .054. To avoid MAF issues, use a WIX flat air filter in the stock air box and change it YEARLY. Install a Dual Exhaust, with Walker H-Pipe, Magna-Flow Glasspax, Walker tailpipes. DO NOT remove the catalytic converters, the "benefits" are minimal -- while you make more noise and pollute everybody's air.

@bigman-jm5mf

You can remove the last 2 because the o2 sensor is behind the front 2. Therefore removing back 2v don't throw codes or require any extra work just remove them and you free some air without consequences
For the intake, I'm sure you could make a shroud around the filter to prevent the engine breathing hot air from the engine bay. Air is poor at heat transfer to solid surfaces, heat transfer to the intake pipe will be minimal, but a shrouded filter will make a difference will stop hot air being sucked into the engine. I wonder if there are intake kits that relocate the filter down away from the engine bay heat? I wonder if there are any standalone ECUS that could be used from a Mustang application. It is the same engine and trans after all, that will definitely make a difference, you can even have multiple maps for different octane ratings of fuel and for use with E85 :D
TB spacer dosnt really work! And 410 gears are great for low-end tourqe and launches off the line but my gas mileage is still good on long trips around 19/20 mpg @90-110 mph on the highway with my 03 mercury marauder! Go down to the 7-11 and get a bag of ice cubes -- put a pound of ice in the air box, under the K&N filter element, before each run. WAY better performance than a CAI. Must use K&N filter -- ONLY filter that works when it is WET !!
Just to let you guys know, there are two really big issues regarding any P71 air box or CAI mods: 1. For those drive by cable (Year1996-2004) that won't throw a code for this mod , drive by cable years all have oil filler cap neck on the driver side valve cover (except for 2003 and some 2004), making the stock P71 air tube and some aftermarket intake air tube impossible to fit, unless you want to change both valve cover (96-02) to 2003-2009 valve covers. But then the fuel line on 1996-2002 would conflict the passenger side oil filler cap neck on 03-09 valve covers. 2. For those drive by cable (Year1996-2004), there is an 2 wire connected Intake Air Temperature sensor embeded in the air box and a 4 wire connected 70mm MAF sensor. The P71 aire box and some KAI have a different size MAF sensor port for 6 wire connected MAF, which means you need to solder together the 2 wires IAT and 4 wires MAF to fit the 6 wires connected MAF. The process is a lot of trouble. Be aware! I realized these two issues after doing tons of KAI and P71 air box swap on panther cars. With this being said, only 2003-2004 panthers can have this mod as direct bolt ons. For other years, you either need a tune to avoid vehicle running lean, or you need to find a way rewiring the MAF or relocate oil filler cap neck with different valve covers and fuel lines.
I think you'd b better overall going for a TUNE rather than 4:10 gears. Especially after u did all that to let it breath.
A throttle body spacer is like a "mini supercharger"? No... it is not. The rest of it works, but you should mention the downsides of nitrous. Bottles do not last long, needing to be replaced every few uses depending on the length of shot and size of hit. Make sure you have a local refill station so you don't go without. Also, while cheap initially the cost of refills adds up, eating up money that could be put into long term mods that are always "on".
Thank you Philip Thomas. Call dealer and sure enough my son's car had recall . Made appointment for this Wednesday. THANK YOU AGAIN. Safe some $$$$$$.
Sometimes going with bigger pipes aren't always the best

Yes, bigger is not always better -- ESPECIALLY when selecting Exhaust Pipe Diameter. Too small a diameter causes restrictions in exhaust flow. Too large a diameter causes a loss of low and mid-range torque -- and increased fuel consumption due to lack of exhaust scavenging. Factory dual exhausts on Vics, Marquis, and Town Cars are 1 and 7/8ths inches in diameter -- which yeilds 20 hp over the single exhaust. The famous 95 MERC employs a Walker H-Pipe; 2-inch MagnaFlow Glasspax; and Walker 2 " Tailpipes. Yields 22-24 hp over stock, checked with G-Tech Pro.
Serious question: Is the car been run on a dyno before and after to prove that this gives you horsepower? Or do you guys only trust what the supplier of the parts says?
First things first guys before You Modify anything change the intake manifold and get either a new stock or something OEM or a upgraded performance one. It will save you lots of BS changing spark plugs, and ignition coils. Plus running with missfire's. They will start leaking coolant around bottom of thermostat housing. Eventually coolant will run on valve covers and find it's way down the rubber boots causing bunch of problems
Just save your money and buy a mercury marauder engine for $1500 bones. That alone is 300 mustang horsepower if you catch my drift.

Can all this be translated to a grand marquis?

YES. But most of these mods are NOT a good idea. These are NOT race-cars, and you'll go broke before you can get any real speed out of a 2-ton car.
Removing the rear cats adds nothing, it only improves sound. Proven, unless boosted

Removing the rear cats frees up the exhaust to give a proven throttle response..not sure where you are getting your info but it is incorrect..we’ve been removing cats since they were federally mandated always with great success

I know this is comparing apples to oranges, but I had a 78 Chevy 350 Nova that I replaced the cat with a straight pipe with correct mounting flanges. I'd put the cat on, have it inspected, take it off until next inspection. Added 2-3 mpg, and the car felt like it had more power.
@SlikLizrd

@@828enigma6 That '78 Chevy had the old "Pan-type" cats, and they were quite restrictive. The free-breathing cats that have been used by FOMOCO for decades breathe MUCH more freely than the pan-type, as used by GM and early Toyotas. You will NOT get 2-3 mpgs from removing the cats from your Ford-Mercury/Lincoln 4.6.
You only lose back pressure if you cut it at the h pipe and lose the bend. Ik from experience lol. Straight piping it normally- cut and replace - works fine
Do these mods also apply to the grand marquis as well

Aside from gears, headers and good tune, there are only two routes with the mod motors, H/C/I or boost, boost is easier and can be cheaper, these motors love boost, anything below 10psi should be fine and with take you close to 350+ whp area, doesn't sound like much but that's how out dated these 2 valve mod motors are. No discouragement though, out of all my cars my vic is still the daily sleeper and I just can't bring my self to sell it

A TB spacer can add a touch of power but mostly at low rpm and skip a goofy short ram intake and keep ya stock airbox and get a high flow panel filter or just replace ya paper filter with a new one and make a bigger better air feed tube for the air box that can get into cleaner cooler air.. remember cool air more oxygen more power.. hot air lower oxygen less power also a TB plenum can add some HP also for cheap money. Dont bother with headers too much of a pain to install and the headers are mega expensive for a vic! Keep ya stock manifolds and ceramic coat them to reduce under hood heat and install some high flow cats and dont go catless you hate the way it sounds and youll get too much attention from the road pirates. Also install an H or X pipe after the cats youll get some good HP from that and dont use flowmasters.. Go with a more straitthru design like a magnaflow or AP xcelerator because when cruising they are very mello with no drone like you get from installing a flow style muffler and when ya on it hard its meaty sounding so best of both worlds. I do like the intake tube wrap to deflect heat so yea good idea.
TB spacer will not get you any gain. Save your money kids. lol

Your '91 5.0 was stock at 140 HP -- The '92 4.6 was stock at 190 HP, 210 HP with factory Duals. Dozens of mods available for your 5.0 -- not so with the 4.6. JEG'S and/or Summit Racing will have anything you need to make your 5.0 into a rocket -- but remember, a 2-ton car ain't gonna get many trophies !
Cool vids. Been looking for ways to pass people slowing down cause a cop cars behind them without going into street mod levels. About how many horses can be added before needing to worry about over stressing the drive train?
the j mod is cool. i did that on a 98 mustang gt. made it alot more fun!
Hey another cheap and easy upgrade is fuel injectors Bosch sells a fat 26 lb fuel I injectors
if you have an 06 or newer crown vic the stock air filter is best.

Agreed but a k&n panel filter is always a good idea
Also add under drive pulleys and run E85 fuel
Only mod here that actually increases performance (NO2 aside) is cat-back exhaust delete/mod, just cut it out and put in straight pipes out the side. Everything else is a waste of money. Headers do nothing on these engines, they breath fine. Get a factory 3.55 dual-track rear axle if you must, it was an option on the P71.
Static pressure is bad, the idiots who put tiny 1.78 pipe on a 350 burn up valves from to much static back pressure. The morons always reverse the truth. Good video
Also a cold air intake is actually more harmful to your vehicle unless you also upgrade your fuel intake and your exhaust export. Adding colder air in a massive open amount fights against with the computer is telling the car to do.
throttle body spacers make it unable for the cruise control cord to attach the the throttle mount
I watched this, then I watched Amiri King's Chevy Silveraido and obtained some excellent information
I had a Silverado and I went from a flow master exhaust to just straight pipe and I noticed a instant loss in low end torque, I put a x pipe on it and I instantly got it back just my experience with back pressure
Thanks for this video mr random 😎
I have a 2000 and a 05 both P71. I love this video
If you just got a cheap crown vic the best thing to do is do a tune up and make sure the radiator isn't cracked, your coolant and oil are not mixing or leaking, change your spark plugs, coil packs, fuel pump, timing belt, water pump, etc so that it won't shit itself on the road after 100k+ miles of abuse. I imagine it's as easy as a Honda to work on from what I've seen, but if you've worked on Hondas you know how cramped and stupid everything is hopefully America got it right.
I have a 2004 Crown Vic P71 which did not come equipped with cruise control and after seeing this video about parts from Mustang GT I wondered if a CC unit for the GT would work with my P71. The local dealer told me if it didn't come equipped with one then not even after market kits would work. Any advise on this I'd really appreciate.
k&n intake actually does zero for HP and mileage.....the one from the factory does the same thing.....for some free knowledge for you people.....if you use a part that is designed to suck in more air/make more air dense....you need to then tune the vehicle to tell it to then add more fuel in the combustion.....adding headers......without doing anything else....(also again, no retune) will maybe add just a few more torque as there is better hot gases being routed different for back pressure and release. folks.....when you change something from what the factory setting is......you need to retune(tell the car) what you did and then what the car also needs to do to compensate for that change to actually get the full benefit from the mod/upgrade. you can upgrade the air intake, throttle, cold air intake and you will maybe get 10 moreHP with the cash you just spent if you don't then also do a retune on it.....I can't say it enough as well.....with the people who think using 93 octane without a tune, helps at all....lol ...93 burns at a different temp./pressure.....if the car doesn't then know what to change for the 93 octane to help.....it won't....it can actually do worse.....because now you are still using same air input into the cylinders and the injectors are still spraying the same amount of fuel and the timing is the same.....it won't do shit. if you're changing fuel burn time.....you need to change the engine timing.....
3:41 "reflecting heat away from it?? Is there a sun inside the hood?
Back pressure has nothing to do with actual pressure back pressure is an explanation of exhaust flow .. anybody’s ever written a true stroke dirtbike has the large expansion chamber in the exhaust that explains back pressure repair as the hot high temperature flame of the exhaust enters expansion chamber and then cools off wrapping contracts because the suction on the engine side pulling more fuel and air and the engine or in a board stroke causing more of the vacuum or exhausting more waste so that you can get more air in and some might say oh why doesn’t it suck from the tail pipe as well and it does a little bit that’s why you put your hand over a tail pipe it kind of pulls and push the same time it has like a buffeting but because exhaust is going in One DirectionIt pulls more from the engine causing you to have more power but removing how to convert is this not gonna have a negative affect on back pressure removing the exhaust system completely will
Going to need to upgrade your stock transmission after all that I think
Throttle body spacers don't add horsepower. Copied from the wiki page: "In 2009 the BBK Performance R&D Department performed extensive dyno testing of off the shelf throttle body spacers from other manufacturers. The intention was to determine whether or not throttle body spacers were a viable product that BBK could manufacture that would provide notable results for their customers. The tests were performed on Ford 4.6L 3-V, GM LS, and Mopar HEMI V8 applications using a Dynojet 248C dynamometer. The tests consisted of a baseline dyno run, cool down period, and a repeat test after the spacers were installed. None of the spacers produced any additional horsepower or torque when tested. The only notable change was a loss of 4 horsepower to the tires on the Mopar application with the spacer installed. An additional test was run after removing the spacer, resulting in a return of the lost horsepower. Proving that some spacers can actually rob power from an engine. After seeing the results, it was clear that throttle body spacers were simply gimmicks and provided no real performance value. BBK scrapped all plans to manufacture throttle body spacers."
If I had the cash, I'd get a nice crown Victoria and do a 5.0 coyote swap
You can easily pass emissions without cats on obdII vehicles. On my cobra I did a bassani off road x pipe with mil eliminators to keep the P0420 code off when you delete all cats. Don't waste your money on flowmaster 40s they aren't that loud with cats and you will sound the exact same as every other car on the road. I went with spintech pro street 9000s on all my v8s and they are very aggressive even more aggressive than flowmaster 10 series which I upgraded from on my cobra. Don't wanna spend the money on the mil eliminators you can always use spark plug non foulers you can youtube how to do those.
I'm about to go pick up a 2004 crown Vic for 3 racks and it only has 55k miles on it. Can't wait!!!

2010 police interceptor that got stolen I got it back but now I need to replace ignition front windshield hood etc. but it still runs good as usual😏
I wanna know how to make the cruise control work. All the fuses are good no broken wires anywhere.
Removing the rear cats . why not remove all 4 , would that be better. ?
My 03 LX Sport is needing extra power, so especially the cheap upgrades from other Ford vehicles(F-E150, Mustang, etc)
Cold air intake is great, but you installed it in a HOT engine bay? WTF??? Free heat soak and timing pull. Nice. Just get a K&N drop in filter for your factory box. Job done. TB spacer? Really? So if a put a 22' pipe on the end of my TB and wrap it with copper tape will I then gain (22x4x5) 440 hp?
Could these mods fit on the Lincoln town car?
