    I worked for 11 years at the ontario plant that assembled the crown vic... I loved driving them, they can take some serious abuse and still perform! Pitty they stoped making them. Im glad you cleared up a lot of the misconceptions around the interceptor. I would tell people but a lot of people wouldn't believe me

    I've been an officer for 21 years. I have driven crown vics most of that time. The 2004 model I had did about 136 for top speed. My 2010 model that I currently have was governed at the factory to 119 but of course I had that removed and it tops out at 152 now. Bone stock!

    LMAO I’m a CDL Truck driver. Fell in love with my 2005 day 1. Why am I making a car payment. Lol. Coming up on 10 years as a truck driver. Crown Victoria even the window washer and wiper controls work the same as an International. OMG that’s a blessing. Just recently purchased I have a lot of respect for the car. It’s a heavy ass car although. Works for you and against you. At speed it responds pretty well but I can see why Police Interceptor Utility became the new line. The car has good pick up when your rolling. For what it is. Lol heavy as shit. But if he’s rolling it’s real easy to get on someone. From a stop lol I’ll take a Chevy Sonic. But it’ll loose that mid range to top end. The car definitely did a job. But yes I agree it’s a slow car. Governors are electronically limited. That’s why you see trucks fighting to pass each other on high way he’s flooring it doing 65-67 other guy probably doing 60. Lol you can remove the governor via a computer. Big issue with trucks we hog the traffic while we pass the asshole 5 mph slower than us. That’s why you see trucks fighting. We do feel bad too. Sometimes we wanna make a quick pass. Lol all these trucks are governed at different speeds. It’s not the truckers fault. He’s making the pass and that’s why you see minimum speed linits Some people will say that’s stupid. Trust me you don’t want us going 80 mph. We will win if an accident occurs. So we are governed. Sometimes it’s a fight to pass the slower going trucl

    Nope, no "cop chip", but you neglect to mention a different airbox, MAF sensor and larger intake tube...complemented by a different PCM...power difference from civi to PI is small, but exists. It also isn't the gearing that allows a higher top speed, but the use of an aluminum driveshaft which increases maximum terminal driveline speed...allowing the PI's to be governed at 129. Vic's with steel driveshafts are governed at 107-119 depending on year and gear ratio.

    There is a problem with the top speed statement, there was a year in the early 2000’s I think 2003 or 2004 and up, there was a limiter set in the computer on the P71 at 129mph to avoid the driveshaft coming apart at higher speeds. The earlier ones would reach somewhere between 130 and 140 given enough room. The civilian ones were limited to 112 by the computer. You are right about the P71 and the civilian one having different rear end ratios but the P71 had a shorter gear ratio for faster acceleration, not geared taller for a faster top speed, the civilian ones had a taller ratio for better fuel economy (lower RPM at highway speeds) but again limited by the computer to 112.

  • @obxjeepguy

    @obxjeepguy

    I'll have to beg to differ. The 3.27 geared cars were 140 cars (I have one), and the 3.55 cars = slightly better acceleration, slightly lower top speed governed by the computer. Ford was worried about the driveshaft disintegrating at higher shaft speeds. Easiest way to tell is by the code on the sticker in the driver's door jamb: C6-3.55 traclok X5-3.27 traclok Z5-3.27 open The "Cop chip" thing always cracks me up. Other than that, I am done internet arguing.

    I have a LTD Crown Victoria from 1990 with the Windsor 302. I can hardly break 110 in mine, but the engine only makes 150hp and I have a 2.73 rear axle. I know fleet and police models could be optioned with the 351 Windsor (I believe it was carbureted) with 180hp and a higher rear axle. Unfortunately nobody really notices my car since most police forces and fleets had retired them by the late 90's. I still love my Crown Vic, especially since the LTD's had a higher value on luxury. It's a shame the Crown Vic's from '83-'91 aren't appreciated more, since they're truly great cars, and I personally like them more than the newer ones.

    As a ex mechanic who worked on the crown vic p71 for over 12 years i can say that the p71 had a different pcm which would make it develop 250 hp as opposed to 239 hp for the dual exhaust civilian model! Also the pcm would make the tranny shift a bit harsher and the cars had a 3.27 ratio for hwy cruisers and 3.55 for city cruisers! P71 were faster as they also would not crap out at 168 km/h cause of the tires fitted on civilian models! Most p71s had goodyear rsa vr rated tires which allowed them to go naturally to their 132 mph top end or 212 km/h top end! I know this from testing them out with the ford rotunda diagnostic computer plugged into the obd 2 port! I know this from experience!!

    I got to 136 mph in an interstate chase pursuits mid 1990"s According to speedometer and radar high speed lock....dual confirmation.... The Ford dealership said the chip Was not LIMITED where as civilian car are per federal law....he showed me the law. I read the law. So I fully believe it depends on the year...and specific research...and real world experience..... I had a private CV Ford. It would do on interstate maybe 115 mph vs my cruiser of 137 Thanks Daymond Chief Jones

    True that there is no "cop chip" in the police Interceptor but there are more differences then just gearing . Other differences other then gearing are: 70mm throttle body (the civilian model is 65mm), police model has an aluminum drive shaft (civilian is steal), the intake is out of the marauder (the civilians is not), the rear end axle is a 32 spline (civilian is 27 spline), the police has larger sway bars and heavy duty shocks, the brakes are also different on the police model, most police models have the red police dome light, police models have a power steering/oil/and transmission coolers to name some things. So there are quite a bit of differences between the two. Giving the police model about 250hp where as the civilian gets 200 to 215 hp

    Lie 1 from your video. do your homework. The Police Interceptor engine calibration includes a slightly higher idle speed (by approximately 40 rpm) and minor changes in the emissions settings. The computer is tuned for more aggressive transmission shift points, and the transmission itself is built for firmer and harder shifts. The EGR system is controlled differently on 03+ vehicles than on 03+ non-police vehicles. Not GEAR RATIO. Lie 2 The 2006-2011 Police Interceptors are equipped standard with an open 3.27:1 rear axle (Axle code Z5), with a trac loc 3.27:1 rear axle (Axle Code X5) optional, and are electronically limited to 140 mph (225 km/h) due to critical driveline speed limitations (The weight of the vehicle with law-enforcement equipment on-board makes it highly unlikely the vehicle could ever reach this figure). An optional 3.55:1 trac loc rear axle ratio with 120 mph speed limiter was also available (Axle code C6). Pre-2006 Police Interceptors equipped with the 3.27:1 rear axle ratio were generally limited to approximately 128 mph (206 km/h). This compares to the standard non-P71 2.73 rear axle ratio with a speed limitation of 110 mph (177 km/h) for all "civilian" Crown Victorias. So your 129 MPH is well wrong too. Since you said nothing about rear axle gears limiting the MPH and what years were affected... Here is the info you should have stated in your video. Ford used an aluminum metal matrix composite driveshaft for the 1993-2005 Police Interceptors as a measure to allow safe operation at over 150 mph (241 km/h), but it was more expensive than the regular aluminum driveshafts. Ford CVPIs were governed to 129 miles per hour. Ford reintroduced a 3.55:1 rear axle ratio for the 2006 model year Police Interceptors with a 120 mph (193 km/h) speed limitation to reduce the risk of driveshaft failure. Ford built two different gear ratios for police use. One had the 3.27 gear ratio and was built for highway use, the second option had the 3:55 Gear ratio and was built for city use. All CVPIs came standard with a 3.27.1 ratio open differential, however departments could order a 3.55.1 ratio locking differential for better acceleration off the line. Also noteworthy is that all cars came standard with an open differential unless Ford's Trac-Lok Differential was ordered with the car. Trac-Lok was available with the 3.27.1 ratio and came standard with the 3.55.1 ratio. And oh before I forget. Your WHEEL comment. Well thats wrong too. See the STEEL wheels you mentions were available in civy models. they had hub caps on them. Only certain models though.

You couldn't hear the engine or feel it when it was running. It was a red two landau, with a black vinyl top. I call myself a customizer. I put a black 6 inche strip at the bottom doors and finders and crager SS with wide tires. It looked good. People liked it. People liked it so much it was stolen. I got mine 3 years ago this month and did run into 2 guys soon after I bought it who believed that "cop chip" rumor and that the police Crown Victoria is some kind of super car as a result. As for the different rear axle ratio, I drove my Vic for a year before the whole rear axle was replaced with a unit from a Grand Marquis....you DEFINITELY feel the difference in acceleration. I have only had mine up to about 90 mph once, as I can't really say that I care for how quickly the fuel tank will empty when running at high speeds, and while it was still reasonably stable at that speed I wouldn't want to try exceeding the 100 mph mark. BTW, now that the rear axle has been replaced the speedometer and odometer are off, especially above 50 mph. I would have to believe there is a fairly easy fix? As it is now, if I want to travel at 60mph I keep it just under an indicated 50 mph.

    P71s have dual exhaust and a less restrictive intake snorkel. The rear gearing has nothing to do with top speed, it’s for faster acceleration. The front brake rotors are bigger and the ecu’s limiter allows a bit higher top speed depending on the two options for rear gearing. Also I think the front sway bar is bigger.

    Ken Rivers it will go faster, the 98 and 99 actually will hit 160. I found out after racing an super charged gtp and probably could have stayed in it with the 3.55 gears. But if you want to get more out of yours. Put a cold air intake with 3.73 and tune it to run 93 or e85. 0-60 in 5.8 seconds, unfortunately mines wasn't turned and the bottom end for some reason went out. You barely floor it and it gets off the line almost like a charger scat pack

    Yes there's no cop chip but it's not only faster because of the gears but how about the 11" higher stall converter? The more aggressive engine tuning? The more aggressive shift mapping? The air box with 80mm MAF and zip tube?

    After spending $900 on an oil change and four new tires they suck the antifreeze out of the engine and used high pressure to install the new antifreeze for my Ford van and it blew the head gasket I was looking at the Crown Victoria but there's so many problems with the car the spark plugs can pop out the intake manifold is cracked and leaking the exhaust manifold has problems where it leaks some of the bolts get cracked and I don't think it's as Dependable as they say it is and the cars have gone up in last year to this year 9.2% you can't even find one with less than $140,000 miles I did find one with 58,000 and it was a police Crown Vic but it was in Louisiana so far every car has a problem I looked at the Mustang the V6 2011 hesitation harmonic balancing problems air conditioning problems I don't know what to get at this point but I have to get something so I can go to the VA and check on my cancer that's back and I need something that I can afford and that's reliable and I don't know what else to get at this point even the Chevy pickup trucks have problems too they all have problems I don't have money to go into buying something paying for on a monthly basis and winding up with a migraine headache so I don't know what I'm going to do

    Bull, I had several crown vice as a police officer. They all did 140 mph. They do have a different computer. The civilian model shuts down at 105 mph. The police chip does not make the car faster in acceleration, but it does allow the car to go faster than 105. Last but not least, contrary to what was said, the police package engines were 3 valve engines.

  • @RJ-vb7gh
    @RJ-vb7gh5 жыл бұрын

    Actually.... My 2003 P71 has the aluminum matrix drive shaft rated to 150 mph. I believe it was after 2004 that Ford did away with or perhaps cost reduced the shaft to a "lesser" one with a rated top speed of about 130 mph and at the same time programmed the computer to top out at 129 to avoid disastrous malfunctions.... Sooo, depending on the condition of the engine and drive-train (decline and tail wind) certain circa 2003 P71's could at least theoretically do 140+ miles per hour. On the up side the later P71"s got an extra 15 to 20 hp to make up for the lost top end speed with better acceleration. I'm thinking that most cops who didn't want their names on plaques on the "Our Fallen Hero"s" wall never noticed the loss of top end speed. As an additional footnote, there is some speculation that the reason the circa 2003 P71's exploded when they were hit in the rear was that they had been lightened to achieve the mythical 150 mph top end... like the old early 1970's Plymouth police package Fury I 's that could do 160 MPH, but folded up like an accordion in a 5 MPH crash. And yes, my 2003 still has the yellow hazard light bar installed and working inside the rear window... to deter people from slamming into it when stopped at the side of the road. As a note of caution.... the non-limited, used municipal police cars may have the equivalent of 480000 miles on their motors... (average 4 years of service for 4000 hours per year [2 shifts] times 30 mph, in as much as they are never turned off) To that, add whatever miles it was driven in the 10+ years since it left service . Now keep in mind when your motor blows at 140+ mph you lose power brakes and steering and your stopping distance with limited steering is measured in miles rather than feet while your motor burns.... and either you or me ever finding out whether a 2003 P71 can really do 150 isn't something either of us should be dying to do. So, no, I can't confirm or deny how fast the unregulated P71's can really go neither should anyone else who has one.

    Counterintuitively, the Police rear gear on these is 3.55:1 and the civilian is 3.27:1. Yet this gives a higher top end because the civilian cars run out of poop before they run out of R’s. On the older 5.0 square ones, through 87 they had 2.73 gears and would about break 110 or so. In 88 they switched to 3.08, and Cop versions had the 3.27. The square ones never had the 5.0 H.O. (But some Town Cars did if you feel talented with changing ECM pins and injector wiring around) and the Police had the same 160 horsepower, small (86 Mustang?) plenum 302. A 351 with VVT and EEC-III setup was optionally available on Police cars I know in 88 and I think until the new body came out but was only rated at 180 horsepower. Square body’s had multiple other mods for Police work, from brakes to a fully open grille.

    I knew the Vick's up to 2000 yr. The entire suspension is different than civilian. The gearing was 3.55:1. Up to the 2000 model year, the ECM was speed limited to 130, to prevent the trans from blowing out fluid in prolonged pursuit. The body mounts are heavy duty, frame has extra bracings, higher capacity cooling for all fluids, fade resistant brake material and so on for reliability. For the most part you were dead on. There is a turbo V6 AWD, but it was never in a Vicky.

    It’s not a cop chip, but a Police Interceptor tune. The Civilian version has a lower speed governor. The Police Interceptor is either 140 or no governor and The trans shifts firmer along with the aluminum driveshaft.
