    im between tech sales and IT right now. Something about the sociability and work-feel of sales sounds awesome. On the other hand, the comfortability and security of IT is alluring too... So, I'm torn and gotta do some more research.

    I work in IT and am transitioning to Sales. You will have way more upward mobility + opportunity in sales, but it is less secure for sure. IT is extremely stable and will always be necessary, but it is much harder to make substantial money in the field.

    Eric, thanks for a great video! I've seen a couple of your videos and have been inspired by your messages and content. I have been a math teacher for 7+ years and am starting to really question my career path. The idea of being compensated based on my efforts and accomplishments really intrigues me. I am wondering if you have any suggestions for a teacher changing their career path to go into tech sales?

    Thanks for reaching out! My brother is actually a former teacher now in ed tech sales for an education platform. It sounds like you're early in this research (correct me if I'm wrong), but as a first step in addition to taking in content from my channel and other reputable creators, I would make a point to network with people you know in the industry even if loosely connected. All you want to do this early is just ask them for a coffee and wanted to learn about what they do in sales. No ask on your side, doesn't need to be overly complicated, you're just there to learn. As you get your bearings you can more aggressively ask for referrals, etc... and find other SDRs and AEs that were former teachers. Happy to help along the way, let me know if you have questions!

    Thanks for the prompt reply! Funny enough, I am grabbing coffee with an old roommate who is in medical device sales this coming weekend. I am hoping to pick his brain and gain a better sense of the related career path. I am eager to learn more about this rapidly evolving field and hopefully deepen my understanding to eventually apply for a position this coming Summer. I'm also excited to learn more about your website 'Higher Levels' and take the Tech Sales Mini Course!@@techsales-higherlevels

    Question for you Eric, I’m thinking of quitting my job to go all in on your course and hoping to catch a job in this sep-december surge. But the way the tech climate is currently, how realistic would it be to get a job within 2-3months? I have extensive experience working in various fields

    Thanks for reaching out. I would get the course while you're still employed, you always have more leverage when you have a job than without one. Almost all of our students are working while taking the course, no need to take on the risk of quitting with nothing lined up! What is your current job? Looking forward to seeing you in the course!

    Personally I feel alot of engineers are very insecure and have a real 'fear of being found out' this is a big problem for engineers getting into sales because sales is just hard and you have to put away professional pride. Most of the great sales people I have known are introverts by the way......just as an aside!

    No doubt. It's a different mindset and tough to adjust to. Now you either succeed or fail publicly, and often times you are publicly failing more than you're succeeding. Fun stuff!

    @@techsales-higherlevels Agreed.The other thing is the engineering is all black and white (switch is either on or off) and sales is all grey.I always think engineers struggle with this.Engineers make brilliant sales people when they relax a small bit.........

    what would you say are a few things that made you so successful in tech sales when you started?

  • @techsales-higherlevels

    @techsales-higherlevels

    Success is earned every day, you are only as good as you last quarter :). I don't get comfortable or let myself think I'm a major success. That said I did win president's club in my first two years and I think what really helped was being solely focused on my job and learning sales. This doesn't even mean working crazy hours, but I would work very hard for 8-10 hours in the day job, read a book for an hour or listen to podcasts on the side each day, etc.... Also attaching myself to top performers as opposed to taking advice from everyone. As I got better and better, I chose who I took advice from and largely tuned out the rest. I, like many, did have ambitions to start my own business, but I wanted to demonstrate success in a direct sales role before trying to venture out. I think if you're hyper focused on performing in your job in year 1 and 2 you can then start to experiment with a side business while still having the skillset to perform in your job, etc... But if you try too much too soon you'll be good at a few things but not great at any one thing.
