Top 3 Reasons You Can't Wheelie A Bike // How to Wheelie a Bike

Спорт

Wheeling seems to be the one bike trick everyone wants to be able to do! And thanks to youtube, there's tons of how-to's on how to do one. That being said, I've seen three main reasons why people still can't wheelie, no matter how hard they've tried, and wanted to share them with you.
3 Reasons Why You Can't Wheelie:
1. Wrong Wheel Popping Form
2. Not Far Enough Back (Balance Point)
3. Not Practicing Enough

@@DailyMTBRider Back break* and to BKXC don't use back brake until you get to balance point while being comfortable with it. Honestly I don't have a back break just pedal control because I do alot of tricks and will brake my lever within the first week or two from my bike slamming down on the pavement learning new tricks.

Practice looping out on purpose a few times. you'll get over your fear and also it will help you feel the spot, bc you'll go past it. OBVS, do this with flat pedals and go slowly. And doing it on grass is best.

I've been doing wheelies for 50 years, just turned 60. Here's some additional pointers if you feel you need them: Practice on a slight uphill incline - your first wheelies will be peddle wheelies - add pressure and lessen pressure while cranking. Avoid practicing in the wind, but if you must, then wheelie directly into the wind and/or downwind. An angle to the wind requires you to "turn" into the wind and it takes more skill, it will discourage you. Seat height should be as low as you can comfortably crank with power. The higher the seat the more skill required but it's easier to peddle, trade off. Gear should be as high as you can comfortably crank into a wheelie. Excessively low gears will torque the bike too much, the twist will throw you into a turn even before the wheel is high enough, keep the gear high enough so that one crank will bring the wheel up and over. Remember to use the FULL pedal crank from the top to the bottom to lift the wheel. Left and Right control is done with your knees. If you're falling to the left or right then you're not using your knees early enough to correct the lean. If you are below the balance point then peddling is required, if you are over the balance point then you use the rear brake. There is one exact point that IS the balance point, you will almost always be under or over it. Once you learn "the save" with your rear brake (front wheel slams down) start learning the art of gently feathering the brake. Learn feathering by riding on two wheels and slow the bike with a finger on the rear brake, feel the pressure on your finger and how much grip is needed. Downhill wheelies require good brake skills or ride a manual - balance with hips and knees. Thanks for a great video.

Ever driven a manual car? It's like feathering the clutch. Not full on engagment, but a sensory "feel" of whether or not you're on the pedal (or in this case brake lever) just the right amount. I presume having really good brakes makes this quite a bit easier.

This helped a lot! Still working towards holding a wheelie longer, but the first tip helped me get the right pop. Side note: something that seriously helped me was to take a quick break every time I wasn’t able to pop the front wheel correctly after about 6-ish tries to conserve energy and think about what I needed to change.

The hardest thing about the wheelie is to find the balance point. You explain it perfectly. You go in an instant panic right at that moment. Second hardest I find is loosing your balance to the side. Our country is in Lockdown and I have the privilege to ride my bike in my driveway and in my yard. So my goal these lockdown days is to practice those wheelies. I'm going to post a progress video eventually on my channel.

One thing that I would like to add: If you can't get your front wheel high enough and you're struggling to find the balance point do this -> Instead of trying to pull the bars just right to get to the balancing point I suggest that in the beginning you actually try to overshoot that point by pulling the bar real hard (also you need to pedal hard and continue pedaling). Just be ready to plant your feet when you do come of the bike. By doing that a couple of times you will realize that leaning too much backwards isn't that bad (if you're going slow) and you will find the balancing point more easily.

I cant just get over the fear of falling too far back. Even though I know to use my back brake for a safety. Anyways I am going to practice daily until I get over the stupid fear. Lol. I wheely in a Very High gear even at slow speeds but you should start with a low gear to help getting the front wheel up, seat hight is someting completly different, if you can wheely for some seconds and then fall to the side get your seat lower it helps with controlling the bike, if you cant get the front wheel up then put your seat higher. if im in a small area and want to do Cyrcle wheelies i usually put my seat completly down, if im Normaly wheeling on the street i have it in a comfy position.

Something I’ve stressed to folks I’ve coached is the importance of Practice. I think it would behoove you to give a sense of scale to your viewers, because that’s what I’ve found to be the biggest misunderstanding about mastering a new skill. I would estimate the average person needs about 20hours of practice to feel comfortable with their balance point and body movements. That’s 20 hours of actual popping, feathering, shifting, etc. If you break that into your recommended 15 minute daily ride, perhaps 3-4 minutes of which is actually useful balance point sensation... Be realistic folks. You won’t master a wheelie like this in 2 weeks of afternoon rides. And you DEFINITELY won’t master the Balance point if you’re not the dweeb in the back of the group ride that tries popping it up on every flat and manuals every dip. That’s what it takes. Plain and simple. Good luck!

My biggest tip is practice going uphill, try keeping your handlebars and knees straight (when starting out lil movement makes you go sideways) until you get comfortable, and also practice on brake control that’ll help out alot the best thing to practice that is try coasting for as long as possible or dropping back which is a liitle bit more harder

I had the same problem; its partially subconscious fear so try this: raise your seat height. After that try and make your bike loop from an extremely low speed with 1 foot off the pedals to step off once it loops. This will make you understand the mechanics of the wheelie. Then try and make yourself loop with both feet on the pedals, you'll find that you naturally jump off as a reflex without thinking about it when you lean to far back. Do this until you are comfortable with looping and dont get that fear in your stomach.

Great vid ty. Yes i too am in this state. What happens is i dont get the wheel up high enough. When i do i think my brain freaks out as to the danger and i react by putting the wheel down. Happened again today, only 1.5 crank rotations in the alley. I got up to 4, over 20' when i was practicing up a slight incline on a grass field. So I will go back to that until i have enough control to get the confidence on the road. The dirt parking lot was I think not inclined and too rough, as was the adjacent field. When i get a hang on the balance it should be easy to do it over all terrains, which is part of the point.

Maybe it’s your bike? If you’re on a single gear bike it will definitely be harder. If you’re on a geared bike you may not be in the right gear, or maybe your pull up isn’t good enough. Keep practicing brother

It looks like you have to low gears to wheelie that fast put on a higher gear it Will be less pedaling and you can go longer
