Fished the KBF tournament here in Huntsville yesterday (3/19). Did the Flint River where it was muddy but clearing. 30 degree temp to start. No keepers 😢 but the bites I got were dragging jig from shore into the river as it drops off within a few feet of the shore line.
Love jig fishing! 3/8-1/2oz with 65 pound braid on a 7’4” MH Fast gets bucketmouth bass in the kayak! 8.1:1 reel
I’m there with you, rod, reel and a football jig. Gotta have the right combination to achieve success. 👍#feelthetug 🎣
Good stuff!
Spot on Chad lived this scenario yesterday. Had two fish toss the jig back at me. I was using a slow reel (5.41) a 7 foot medium heavy fast (googan) rod. So two of the issue you discussed. So yes your tips make sense , even more so in a kayak thanks ,new reel coming and looking at rod options
i don't fish the full size enough, but i love throwing those smaller bitsy bug styles. i used to only think of them as a colder water bait, but the more i use em, the more my mind changes. thanks for the tip on the fast action rod, i can see how that would help hop em through cover!

Those bitsy bugs and missile mini jigs are money down on Lewis smith lake for alabama spotted bass
Another great video, as always, Chad. Just one thing, though. You mentioned how a longer rod will give you more leverage. Well, the problem is, science states otherwise. In our example, the rod acts as a lever, and the fish is the load. The longer the lever, the greater the load, hence, you are not gaining leverage, but actually LOSING leverage with a longer rod. Not sure how this all got started, but just thought I'd point it out, since it still gets thrown around a lot.

That’s potentially true with a fixed fulcrum in a traditional physics problem. Walk out in your yard and attached rope to anything, let’s call it a brick. Try to pull it with a really short stick and then do the same thing with a longer stick. The problem with applying the “basic” physics definition or formula is that a rod is not classified as a simple lever, the fulcrum is dynamic and there is a fluid state of the moment. In addition, the team leverage here is also applied to our ability to manipulate the fish, and have a longer rod where we can induce a higher angle for the applied pressure also creates a form of leverage that is again dynamic with an ever changing moment and angular calculations of the simple lever construct that you recommend would actually be calculated from your hand placement on the rod (the fulcrum) to the butt of the rod, not the rod tip. Hope that makes sense.
Love it Chad!!! Thanks for the advice 🙏 Keep them coming 👍

Thank you.
For the rod you want to keep your rod pointed down not up, because if its pointed up you give the fish an option to jump. And when they jump they do the head shake which will throw your bait out of their mouth.

And when I can tell they are going to jump i change angles and keep them down or put the rod tip in the water to water load the line. You don’t keep your rod tip down for the presentation unless all you want to catch is snags and brush piles

@@ChadHooverFishing I gest it really does depend on the location, and how deep the fish is at.
Great video . Thanks for the information. I started throwing jigs a year ago that’s what I caught my personal best on.
Great Video. Thanks!

I've been using a moderate fast Heavy for years. Ima have to try a fast now. I normally fish shallow when I'm jig fishing. Awesome video
Good advice. It's almost exactly what I do.
Great tip Chad! I have not fished a jig much but I want to master it this year. I love using a bladed jig but always wanted to get confident with a jig. I will give your tips here a try.
Great video Chad! Sometimes I honestly lose confidence when not getting bit on a jig but definitely a fun lure to fish when you get on the jig bite!
I've been after my to boarden the types of baits to use, and jigs are one of those baits. So, any tips about them always helps.
I absolutely love throwing all types of jigs. A main staple in my arsenal. Great informational video. I catch bass, northern pike and even musky on bass jigs.

Thank you. Yeah, they catch everything
Well I'm glad I watched this video because apparently I've been using the wrong rod. I was using a moderate rod and a slower reel.. looks like I have to switch it up. Thank you for making this video.
I just lost a nice one right at the kayak, and now I know why. Thanks for the info. 👍🏻

Take about some jigs and leave everything else at home. That’s how you build your confidence in a bait

@@ChadHooverFishing I just got done doing exactly that.Windy as hell here in NC and stuck on the bnk today. But it did give me a chance to work with the jig some and see what you mean about feeling the bottom and working it over snags. Can't wait for a good day to try from the yak.
Thanks brother. Now I’m going to get jiggy with it!

Great video Chad, I appreciate the knowledge. Also where can I buy a hat like the one you are wearing in the video, I can’t find one.
I recently started throwing out jigheads. Gotta say It's definitely becoming a great weapon in my arsenal. Great video Chad.

@@ChadHooverFishing yeah it honestly just makes sense. can make for a more subtle entry into the water and i'm sure dragging from shore into the water emulates a lot of different things big ol' bucket mouths eat.
Short attention span here. I appreciate the short videos.
I'm winging it out there and not doing too bad getting some decent bass pickerel and perch. No idea what my gear ratio is or my rod stiffness or speed. Hell it's collapsible and was $13. I watch these videos and absorb some info here and there but I feel like taking it to this level starts to take some fun out of it being a hobby and turns it more into a job of having to know all this stuff and buy tons of gear. I'm never going to take it that serious. My goal this year is to get one of the 30+ inch monster pike in my local lake. If I can get there - knowing where they hang out and what they like - I'll be happy maintaining.
I don’t throw em much , thanks for tip n info . Dink Drop Brother
Yes! Never thought about some of this, but this makes a lot of sense. I'm fishing my first kayak tournament (my first tournament period) in a couple of weeks. When do you choose to throw the jig?

Only caveat to the football jig recommendation is if you fish grass lakes. 75% of the lakes I fish up here in the northeast are nearly impossible to fish a football jig. Grass everywhere and the bottom is 6” of muck. In that case buy a flipping or grass jig 100% . I made the mistake of trying to learn jig fishing with a football jig and almost gave up until I learned it wasn’t suited for grass
I love jigs. Football - Swim. Bass can’t help theirselves!
How about tying the loop knot on a jig!!

Do you think a 7’6” Heavy Extra fast rod is a good jig rod with a 7.3:1 reel is good and what else do you think would be good for this set up

To each his or her own. I just know what works best for me and how to have the best overall experience when fishing jigs
They are facing the bank that’s when you have to do that
STAND-UP JIG! That's the best. Why? Because it puts the bait UP. THATS the natural defense position of a crawdad.. your bait simply doesn't lay on the bottom.
@ChadHooverFishing

Many times the fish key on something that looks less defensive or like an easier meal. Dr Keith Jones found that bass keyed in on crawfish with smaller pincers on a regular basis.

@Chad Hoover well,I'm not a professor but I have fished for close to 45 years in Virginia, mostly and I used a stand up jig with a " Mikes" crawl" and caught and average PROBABLY in the 40 a day average. Some days we have caught 100. Smallmouth was the main species. So I guess you can see why I would favor a stand-up jig head.
What’s up knuckleheads ❤
Another big mistake is buying trash jigs.
