    Please tell that to Eddyline. They persist in showing undefined "weight capacity" on spec pages that is misleading and potentially unsafe. Ex: the new C10 is pitched with a "weight capacity" of 200, when unbeknownst to most buyers that includes the 40lbs of the boat's own weight.

    @jagermiker Жыл бұрын

    NuCanoe kayaks have been rated to their "functional" limits. The weight of the hull and seat have already been factored in. Their weight capacities also state the difference between "self bailing" and with the scuppers plugged. Their Unlimited and Frontier 12 offer a self bailing capacity of 400lbs, 650lbs with the scuppers plugged.

  • @ChadHooverFishing

    @ChadHooverFishing

    Жыл бұрын

    Yeah, and that might be even worse. So, you can add that much weight, but it isn’t self bailing because you have in scupper plugs. But if you take on even a few gallons of water you can’t remove it because it’s past the self bailing limit and now the problem is compounded if your kayak is even close to the limit. I also spoke to the NuCanoe reps to determine how they actually determined that weight and there wasn’t a clear cut answer. They have one of the better limits with thought put into how to articulate it, but I still think there needs to be a standard and a more clear definition of what the weight capacity actually means.

    THANK YOU for this video. Thank you for your work to get this changed. Sadly manufacturers will rarely listen to the consumer. I've been screaming about this since I got burned when I purchased my Bonafide SS127. I had been needing a boat with a large capacity to haul saws and winches to clear trees from rivers. At the time, bonafide did not have the disclaimer on their website saying boat weight was subtracted from the capacity. I got the boat expecting to put 475 lbs into it. As I started loading the boat I got to about 375 lbs and noticed how the low in the water the boat was sitting. I tested it and determined that the boat was getting unstable and there is no way I could put more into it. It could have gotten very dangerous for me had I continued loading it to its stated capacity. A few months later, TG canoe and kayak put out a video showing the usable capacity to be below 375lbs. Had I known this at the time, I never would have purchased the boat. Its soured me on bonafide and their deceptive practices since. I wont support a manufacturer that does this. I think also its a way to "compete" with other manufacturers and boats. Their new rvr has a 330ish usable capacity. You have a larger paddler like myself and this leaves little room for gear. If they advertised that accurate usable capacity vs their listed capacity, most would scoff and run from it. Part of the problem is too many defend and support the nonsense of subtracting the boat weight from the capacity. Its absurd anyone would defend this LIEING misleading DANGEROUS practice. Most of the time its to defend a manufacturer they like. People need to stop with this and call them out regardless of what manufacturer it is. I LOVED your analogy from the RV showing the weight rating. Another one I use is pickups. If you have a pickup with a 1/2 ton, 3/4 ton, or 1 ton capacity, you dont subtract the vehicle weight from that capacity. If thats the case, you wouldn't be able to haul anything. I'm thankful that most jacksons are spot on with their capacities or run on the low side. I also like that their capacity rating is an actual capacity, no subtracting the boat weight from it. They do this with their orion coolers, the number is the actual capacity unlike other cooler manufacturers. I've personally put 550lbs and more into my bigrig. My other jacksons appear to be spot on too. Chris funk the feral one has a video where he but 525lbs into a coosa X. This is 100lbs more than the capacity rating. Others have done checks and found their capacity ratings to be accurate or close. Its also absurd that so many subtract the hatches and fitting from the capacity and dont include it in the weight. Enough is enough. How many are going to paddle a boat without handles rails or a seat? Again this is deceptive practices that we should be screaming about to get ended. I also agree that manufacturers use these deceiving and misleading practices to compete with others. Bonafide is a prime examble of this as their larger boats dont have the usable capacity that most seek and need. Its sad and not ethical when manufacturers do this. I hope that we can get this fixed before a lawsuit is needed when someone dies.

    We are a dealer for both Feelfree and NuCanoe. Your video motivated me to inquire of our manufacturers exactly how they rate the weight capacity of their kayaks. Although that may not be the case with every brand, I am pleased to report that both of these vendors weight capacity numbers reflect the true "persons and gear" capacity. Here are the responses I got from each of them. From Feelfree: Great question, I am happy to clarify here. Our final capacity numbers are determined through on-water testing. So if our capacity says 400 lbs, you can put up to 400 lbs in the boat and it will perform/float as intended. The hull weight is NOT part of the total capacity. Any other add-ons, such as a pedal drive, person, fishing gear, etc would be counted. From NuCanoe: We did see that video. Our weight ratings have never included the hull weight, just passenger and gear. We also list the capacity two ways: 1. Self-Bailing capacity - Max weight for using with the scuppers open/unplugged. 2. Max capacity - Max weight with all scuppers plugged. Thanks Chad for your informative and helpful videos! Can't wait to see what you have coming next.

    Been looking forward to this one! I'm all for giving some time to get people together, establishing a standard and making the changes needed to be transparent with customers. That said, I'm also hoping once enough time has passed we get some call outs for companies that either refused to abide by the standard or are finding ways to tweak the numbers in their favor. An accurate description of a products weight (plus/minus some variance) and it's usable capacity is honestly a pretty low bar and expected in pretty much every other vehicle/craft industry out there. If a companies product isn't matching up with competitors due to a reduced capacity, lying to customers isn't the answer. I'm looking forward to the kayak "space race" maximizing usable capacity while limiting hull weight without significantly impacting performance. There's tons of room for innovation out there (some of it pretty simple actually) that could drastically improve capacity in the short-term. Someone just has to decide to do it.

    This is a great effort Chad. I don't remember getting a Coast Guard rating plaque with my kayak, but it should be pretty cut and dry what weight is usable and I don't get why it is so difficult for us kayakers to get quality information. That being said, one of my concerns is always the leeway left in verbiage for standards like this. I appreciate your point about how you don't care what weight it takes to sink your boat (nor do I, really) but leaving it to "the weight when performance is diminished" could leave a crack in the door for companies to define "diminished" how they choose. There is diminished performance, performance that is diminished so much that it becomes a safety issue (depending on water conditions) and "your kayak is at the bottom of the lake." It would be nice to have all three, but I believe the "self bailing weight" or something similar should be the bare minimum, because that one can't be hidden by subjective definitions of performance.

    Heck yeah! I was looking at a Vibe, emailed customer service and an executive (the owner?) got back to me and explained very clearly how capacity was determined. Vibe was great about getting back to me and explaining everything. Not every company is as good about it, but it would be nice if the industry had an easy to understand standard. Thanks for the 75% capacity suggestion. Crescent Crew capacity is 600 lbs... less say 80 lbs for boat. 520 * .75 = 390 so me, 50 lbs of gear and 10 lbs for beer, I mean spring water with a bit for safety. Thanks for this. I really appreciate it. Now if the manufacturers fudge the boat weights then I'm still screwed...

    It's also a problem when manufacturers weigh the boat plastic only before adding the seat, hatches, and track. Weight capacity has become a bigger problem both as anglers have gotten heavier, and as more and more guys are tricking out plastic boats like a bass rig or jon boat with motors, electronics, and a bait box for every situation. Simplicity used to keep almost everyone below the weight capacity.

    Thanks Chad. I have been working on my SS107 by adding a trolling motor. I weigh 255 and my kayak w/ seat is 85 lbs. So I'm already at 340 before any gear or trolling motor. So you're saying that I only have 85 lbs left if my max weight is 425 lbs. That's a little discouraging. I didn't know that the weight of the kayak goes toward the max weight. I'm trying to wrap my head around this. I thank you for educating me to this. I have a lot to think about tiring to put equipment on the kayak.

    That was nice that you mentioned Aliex Folgueira and Action Water Sports. I watched Aliex's video on kayak weights as well. Both videos are informative. The fact that some kayak companies play with weights is absolutely 💯% a safety issue. I knew about subtracting the weight of the kayak from the weight of the listed capacity to get the usable weight. However, if the actual weight of the vessel is off, then your usable capacity is off as well, and that is not good. Accuracy in vessel weight and capacity recording should be of paramount importance. After all, at the end of the day, we all want to go home, and our loved ones want us to come home alive.

    When looking to buy a kayak you fist need to know the total weight you plan to load it with. Second thing you need to know is how to figure RUNNING weight. To figure the running weight of a kayak is to subtract 30% off of the manufacture's stated weight capacity or take the weight capacity on the kayak you are looking at take the stated weight capacity × .7 to get the running weight capacity

    Why not standardize the weight capacity by the displacement to float the boat -20%. Each boat based on the materials used should have a maximum capacity of displacement lbs. Roland Martin did a video about how he rigged his canoe and added boat bumpers to the sides of it to offer some stability, but also to add floatation , so it the canoe flips it won’t sink. Getting some of the more influential people like him to chime in would be really great. calculating buoyancy is based on the formula of B = ρ × V × g, - B (buoyant force) = p (density of fluid) x Volume (volume of the boat displacing the water) x force of gravity. The buoyancy force is usually calculated in Newtons

    Thanks for making the video and your efforts. Honestly it’s intentionally misleading what they say. Weight capacity is how much weight you can put in the boat (regardless of boat weight). Water displacement is the actual term they should be using for weight capacity + boat weight. But why even make people do the math and use the wrong term. It’s just messed up, I darn near sank my yak before I learned how they misrepresented capacity.

  • @kayakflyfishingschool

    This is the formula or method the US Coast Guard uses and/or recommends for figuring out weight capacity. “If your boat does not have a capacity plate, the U.S. Coast Guard recommends the following formula for calculating maximum occupancy: multiply the boat's length times its width and divide by 15.” For instance a Hobie Pro Angler 14 with capacity would be: Length: 13’8” x Width: 38”= 6232 6232 / 15 = 415.47 So a Hobie PA 14 would have a capacity of 415 pounds.

    @@ChadHooverFishing maybe just go old tech: use weights distributed throughout the kayak, when water can no longer self bail, that’s your safe/optimal load capacity, total capacity is when water comes over the deck/bow/stern and/or when cockpit is full of water. Harder than figuring out how to measure across the manufactures is hire to enforce it, no governing body currently as you eluded to in the video, so that may need to be the first step, altough not everyone will want to be governed. Have you contacted the Coast Guard to see if their auxiliary watercraft division can assist?

    Gday Chad, this is another very interesting topic! I have no idea how much all the gear I put on my kayak weighs (I'm sure, I'm not the only one). I know how much I weigh, but that's it. I don't run a motor but have a good share of accessories, tackle etc. I'm sure I'm under the limit but by how much I don't know. What we be a good way to weigh it all? Also, I've always wondered if manufacturers take this into consideration with warranty claims? If so, then that's another good reason for both manufacturers & consumers to have an accurate weight capacity.

    Being a senior, big angler, trying to determine the weight capacity issue has always been a hassle ever since I started fishing from a kayak several years ago. For the last five years I have been using a FF Lure 11.5 and even though I am a minimalist re:gear, I had a feeling I was well over the weight limit; apparently so. So let me see if I understand you for manufacturer listed weight capacities that include the kayak weight. If a person is 300 lbs, carrying a 100 lbs of gear (motor, battery, etc) and the kayak actually weighs 100 lbs that's 500 lbs of total weight towards the rating. When you invoke the 75% rule the weight capacity should be on the order of 667 lbs (yup I did some math LOL)? And if you're weight is at 350, the capacity would have to be upwards of 725 lbs?
