Noah Carson Especially since Batman the Animated Series IS The Nostalgia Critic's favorite show as a child. As well as the intro is a visual marvel to watch. There's no singer, no "Staring *insert voice actor, as *insert character, hell there's no title. There's just the amazing opening, amazing music and the last scene of Batman posing while a lightning bolt appears, revealing Batman is, you guessed it, amazing.

Anyone else notice that the little bird in Jack of all trades on that dude's shoulder is not a prop. It's actually a real bird that the crew took the time to make a tiny outfit for just for a very brief 2 second shot. That is so cool. For me it's kind of hard for me to pick my favorite intro. I grew up more on cartoons and enjoyed those more than live action intros because you can do more with it.

+Kemonokami I know exactly what you mean about how much of a bar that X-Men: The Animated Series raised for me in preparing me for all of the movies. And remember that Hugh Jackman, once he was cast as Logan/Wolverine, didn't know anything about the character coming in, but afterwards got issues of the comics and then whenever he was filming actually ad-libbed "BUB" into his lines to give that authentic accuracy to the character and helped to make it his own and it was all because of this show.

+Kemonokami I still stand by how much the animated series has risen the bar for me on my expectations with how I want Oscar Isaacs to portray En Sabah Nur/Apocalypse. I have even stood by and said that I want to hear Oscar say, just one time, one phrase that totally embodies Apocalypse in every way, "I am far beyond mutants as they are beyond you." I know that it cannot be said as deep or as epically as that one guy from the show but as long as he says it I will totally GEEKGASM in that theater.

The Beetlejuice opening, no matter what mood I'm in, never fails to make me smile this huge cheshire cat-esque grin. That first "Beetlejuice" and those first notes play, and I'm already smiling like an idiot. While I also love the MASH intro, it doesn't really set the tone for the series (maybe for the later seasons when Alda started directing more). It was always kind of jarring to me to have this melancholic intro and jump straight into campy music with a laugh track on many episodes (especially in the first couple of seasons).

Fun fact: the TMNT theme song was written by Chuck "God of Awful Sitcoms" Lorre in less than 24 hours, using a synthesizer and a session band. He was making jingles at the time, heard a new kids show was coming out and needed a theme, and asked to be given a shot. He wasn't told he could until less than a day before the pilot was to be aired, requiring him to rent a studio, hire musicians, and write the song as quickly as possible. Also, in the same vein as Tales from the Crypt, I would have added a nod to Are You Afraid of the Dark?. Sort of ironic that the kids' version of the same concept would have the scarier opening, but from the haunting music to the tour of creepy "is it haunted of just my imagination?" imagery, it's enough to make even adults piss their pants. Probably the best part of the intro is they never show a single monster, ghost, or even thing that is demonstrably scary. Just things like a creepy old doll, a door creaking open, a swing moving by itself... things people would see a lot and yet are inherently creepy on their old, but at the same time they do it so stylishly that it doesn't just feel like a tour of every creepy cliché in the book. The show surprisingly holds up today (once you get past the horrid acting in the first season, and even then the stories were good, they just had no budget or professional actors), but that intro should have made all the kids watching run off screaming into the night, not keep watching.

Here's a few great introductions from British TV shows: Horrible Histories, The It Crowd, Postman Pat, Blackadder Goes Forth, Sherlock, Jeeves and Wooster, Doctor Who, The Inbetweeners, Humans, Call the Midwife, The Great British Bake Off. And the crowning jewel of them all: Peppa Pig.

Since everyone seemed to talk about cartoon intros, how about the Mission Impossible TV show intro? With the lit fuse burning across the screen, and the faces of the stars being cut into the letters of the title? Or the original Star Trek Intro with the shots of the Enterprise traveling through space. Sure, it's a narration voice over, but it's one of the most famous voice overs in a television show.

When Gabby Duran And The Unsittables premiered on Disney Channel in October 2019, I was a huge fan of Kylie Cantrall's. I knew all the words to all the songs she sung. The intro to the show was spectacular! I saw her in the opening throwing an apple into the blob's mouth, giving it a bath, even kicking that robot ball way up in the air in the comms room and cleaning up the floor. It gets me hyped up whenever I'm in the mood for some awesome alien babysitting adventures. The intro to Gabby Duran And The Unsittables was an idea so cool, it had to be good.

I loved the intro to Secrets of Sulphur Springs. It had two kids finding a girl who's running around in the forest and the part where a daily newspaper was sitting on the ground and says that she's missing. It also has gags right before every episode at the end. I couldn't even believe why the music was short. The Secrets of Sulphur Springs intro gets me ready for some thrilling mysteries. I even kept hearing that season two is coming up next year on Disney Channel. And I hope the cast of the show will review recaps from the show really soon.

The best part about it is Molly McGee getting so excited because she made friends with a ghost named Scratch. It's cool, fun, awesome and a thousand times more epic than other Disney Channel show intros. It gets me hyped up for some way cool and wacky supernatural adventures.

Scott Sandler I did not watch the other ones, but the Sailor Moon one was pretty much a boys view on Sailor Moon. Although you are correct, it was a girly show and an anime, so his rule is already broken. I think he won't do it because of the huge, inevitable backlash.

I know I am coming in way late for this, and I do appreciate your list. I would add 3, one of which might not be known well: Barney Miller - best instrumental intro Courageous Cat and Minute Mouse - The genesis to 60s Batman (Bob Kane created it years before the campy series), and my number one, Spider-Man the 1968 version. A tune that is as infectious as any flu. I am enjoying your entire library and appreciate all the work put into it. Kudos.

Athavan Rajasingham Eh, maybe just the justice league show. Don't get me wrong, the Justice League Unlimited opening, like the show, was pretty great, but the original show's opening just seemed to have a lot more epicness and majesty (even if it did have kind of laughable CGI effects).

  • @jshadowhunter

Reasons why the TV intros are almost non-existent these days is mostly because of the stupidass US commercialism, especially when it comes to Cartoon shows. If the intro is longer than 20 secs, they'll cut it down or just make it non existent, just so they can show more commercials. The orignal Sonic Boom is 45 seconds long, but n US they just cut it down to 15 seconds. Even Amazing World of Gumball is made non existent because it's 24 seconds long. Steven Universe is one of few shows that's able to do it, since it's more or less able to fill up all that you need to know about the show in 20 seconds.

+Turmoil Yeah. You can actually even see the progression with shows like the Simpsons. The last two seasons have had more episodes without the opening titles than the first 25 combined. Nonexistent opening titles do have their place, but only when done effectively like Lost. So it basically has deteriorated to a point where the most memorable openings nowadays are from premium cable shows. Game of Thrones would be quite a bit more confusing without its opening titles reminding you where everyone is.

Well actually that may not be the reason. In the first or second episode of most shows the intro age fully, after that is only plays part way. However since the shortened version is used the rest of the time it just seems like it was always shortened. Also would you really want to sit through the same 45-60sec intro every time.

Speaking of which, the Simpsons used to have around 22-23 episodes per season and the season premiere aired when summer was over. Now there's maybe 12 episodes a season and the Halloween special is also considered the season premiere.

It's simple what the Jonny Quest Intro reveals: It's a topographical map, showing the contour lines of specific levels of elevation (and I suspect it is a reference to the QuestWorld virtual reality element of the show in particular, a classic 90s interpretation of what cyberspace would look like if you could jack into it a la the Matrix). It's pretty easy to figure out what it is when you reinterpret the beginning of the intro as a canyon flyby, seeing the lines as markers for particular elevation points.
